Visiting Indian Army chief General Vijay Kumar Singh yesterday laid emphasis on increasing exchange of training and sharing of experience between Indian and Bangladesh armies for further strengthening capacity of two neighbouring forces.
He made the proposal while paying a call on President Z Rahman.
Welcoming the Indian Army chief, President Rahman, who is also supreme commander of the Bangladesh armed forces, recalled the contribution of Indian Army during the country's War of Liberation in 1971.
The president also thanked the Indian Army chief especially for his brave involvement and individual contribution in the War of Liberation.
General Singh is one of the Indian Army's veterans who took part in Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971. He fought in Feni, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar as a second lieutenant after being commissioned in the Rajput Regiment in 1970.
The Indian Army chief apprised the president that he had imparted training to freedom fighters of Bangladesh at different frontier camps from April to September in 1971. From November he joined at the battle directly.
The Indian Army chief said he visited Bangladesh several times from 1972 and observed continuous development and prosperity of the country on every occasion.
General Singh met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who made it clear that Bangladesh believed in peaceful co-existence and maintaining friendly relations with all neighbouring countries, including India.
During the meeting, the Indian Army chief handed over some rare photographs of Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his visit to India in different periods.
