Are the private sector minting money out of sand to invest in FICV or FMBT program if there is no commitment for RFP, forget even the firm orders? What would compel them to develop prototypes when OFB is already in place to grab the whole pie?

It's better to not announce such an ambitious programs like F-INSAS, FICV, etc. if you are not going to follow it up later. It also highlights that somebody is grabbing undue career progression by selling fake dreams/vision to higher ups & the common public Ultimately, it terribly affects the credibility of the institutions .
Boing is making f18 do ski jump. Even when India has announced tedbf development.

Private sector has already build prototypes so not a new expense only making it closer final offering by ironing out all issues.

Indian procurement was always a mess. Private sector knows that already .

I was quite amused by seeing comparison made between Boeing and Indian firms like L&T, Tata etc. Let's leave it to the fate of Indian MIC. I hope the current upgrade of Indian BMP-2 matches or exceed BMP-3 which the Russians are planning to replace in this decade.

Not sure about BMP 3 but the current upgrade will keep them till FICV starts arriving in large number.

In A Major Boost To IAF, Defence Ministry Approves Acquisitions Worth Approx. Rs.38900 Cr.
On Thursday, the Defence Acquisition Council under the Chairmanship of Rajnath Singh approved acquisitions of various equipment approximately worth Rs.38,900 crore for the Armed Forces. The Defence Ministry attributed this to the current situation and the need to strengthen the Armed Forces for safeguarding our borders. The approved proposals include acquisitions from the Indian industry of Rs.31,130 crore in line with PM Modi's clarion call for Atmanirbhar Bharat. The equipment to be manufactured in India will witness the participation of several MSMEs as prime-tier vendors.

In some of these projects, the indigenous content is up to 80% of the cost. The transfer of technology from the Defence Research and Development Organisation to the indigenous industry has made a large number of these projects possible. The DAC also approved the procurement of more fighter jets in wake of the Indian Air Force's requirement to increase its fighter squadrons. While the procurement of MiG-29 jets and upgradation from Russia is estimated to cost Rs.7,418 crore, the Su-30 MKI aircraft will be procured from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at an approximate price of Rs.10,730 crore.

These are some of the approved proposals:

  • Pinaka ammunition- which will enable raising additional regiments
  • BMP armament upgrades
  • Software-Defined Radios for the Army
  • Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile Systems- having a firing range of 1000 km
  • 248 Astra Missiles- which have Beyond Visual Range capability
  • 21 MiG-29 fighter jets
  • Upgradation of existing 59 MiG-29 fighter jets
  • 12 Su-30 MKI aircraft
The defence procurement assumes significance at a juncture when India is grappling with the faceoff with Chinese troops at the Line of Actual Control. Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had visited Russia from June 22-24- which was the first foreign visit of an Indian minister after the COVID-19 pandemic. During this visit, Defence Secretary Dr.Ajay Kumar met Russia's Deputy Defence Minister Col. General AV Fomin. In Rajnath Singh's meeting with Russia Deputy PM Yury Borisov, ways to increase defence cooperation were discussed. Speaking to the media in Moscow, the Defence Minister revealed that all Indian proposals had received a positive response from the Russian side.

#DAC has cleared defence deals worth ₹38,900 cr. Including 12 Su 30MKI, 21 MiG 29 with upgrade of 59 MiG 29, Pinaka ammo, BMP armament and upgrades, SDR for Army, Long Range Land Attack Cruise missile (1000 km), Astra BVRAAM for Navy and IAF

India accelerates weapons purchases in wake of border clash with China

India has accelerated the domestic and foreign purchase of weapons in the wake of a border clash between Indian and Chinese troops.

Sino-Indo relations are suffering after a skirmish with Chinese troops on June 15 in Galwan Valley. India said 20 of its soldiers were killed, as were Chinese soldiers. Chinese officials have not confirmed any casualties.

The Defence Acquisition Council on Friday approved a collection of arms procurement projects worth $5.55 billion, including domestic efforts worth $.4.44 billion. DAC is an apex-level body that falls under the purview of the Ministry of Defence.

“In the current situation and the need to strengthen the armed forces for the defence of our borders, and in line with our Prime Minister’s clarion call for ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ [self-sufficient India], the DAC, in its meeting of July 2 held under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, accorded approval for capital acquisitions of various platforms and equipment required by the Indian armed forces. Proposals for an approximate cost of $5.55 billion were approved,” the MoD said in a statement.

Under the approval, India will upgrade 59 of its MiG-29 aircraft and buy 21 more from Russia for about $1 billion. In addition, India will order 12 Russian-made Su-30MKI fighters from the local state-owned company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for $1.53 billion.

The government has also approved several indigenous development programs, including ammunition for Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers; an armaments upgrade of BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles; software-defined radios; Nirbhay land-attack cruise missiles; and Astra beyond-visual-range missiles.

The government also approved the emergency purchase of Excalibur artillery rounds for M777 ultralight howitzers from the United States, Igla-S air defense systems from Russia and Spike anti-tank guided missiles from Israel.

It’s also granted special financial powers that comes with a ceiling of $71.42 million to rapidly buy weapons. But these fast-track purchasing programs will still involve a multi-vendor competition. Twenty-five of these procurement programs are for the Army and the Air Force; 10 are for the Navy. The Army is likely to buy ammunition for its T-90 tanks, BMP-2 vehicles, air defense guns, artillery guns and small arms, as well as rockets, missiles and mortars. The Air Force is likely to buy air-to-air missiles, air to-ground missiles, smart bombs, chaffs, flares and precision-guided munitions.

As part of the procurement effort, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar visited Moscow from June 22-25 and met with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov and chief of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheev.

An MoD official said India requested the immediate supply of spare parts for Su-30MKI fighters, Kilo-class submarines and T-90 tanks, as well as the emergency purchase of missiles and specialized ammunition for Russian-origin fighter jets, tanks, warships and submarines.

Another MoD official said the Indian government plans to sign defense contracts with Russia worth $800 million to buy weapons and spare parts.

DAC-approved projects are expected to be awarded within a year, with technology induction starting after about three years. For fast-track and emergency purchases, induction is to begin within a month and be completed within a year.

India fast-track weapons buys and is arming itself to the teeth
There’s nothing like a border clash with a superpower to spark the purchase of new weapons for defense.

After tense clashes between Indian and Chinese troops, it appears that India has accelerated the domestic and foreign purchase of arms, sharpening the spear in just about every military sector, according to a report by Vivek Raghuvanshi of Defense News.

Sino-Indo relations are suffering after a skirmish with Chinese troops on June 15 in Galwan Valley. India said 20 of its soldiers were killed, as were Chinese soldiers.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Friday approved a collection of arms procurement projects worth US$5.55 billion, including domestic efforts worth US$4.44 billion, Defense News reported.

While both nations are extolling peaceful negotiations over the ongoing border issue, make no mistake, India is not taking chances — they are arming themselves to the teeth.

Potent, formidable and Made in India Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP 2 deployed in Ladakh region

According to reports, the KBP delegation members in 2014 had a number of exhibitions with officers in the Ministry of Defence held a number of meetings and detailed presentations of the company’s products were made.

In a clear message to China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane, on Friday, witnessed a military drill which involved a large number of ground commandos, tanks, BMP infantry combat vehicles, Apache, Rudra and Mi-17 V5 helicopters, at Stakna. In response to the Chinese side building up the presence of heavy artillery, armoured vehicles and troops, Indian Army has deployed its own homemade BMP 2 armoured vehicle in an effort to counter the threat to the Darbuk–Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DSDBO) road, a road very important for the Indian forces.

Why is BMP 2 present in Ladakh?

Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP2 is one of the most potent and formidable weapon platform and it equips the army’s Mechanised Infantry battalions.

This armoured vehicle has the capability to launch missiles, mortars, rockets, and machine guns. And also keep the troops inside the vehicle safe, while moving forward.

The decision was taken to deploy the BMP 2 on the confluence of the Galvan Valley and the Shyok River, in an effort to deter the Chinese troops.

These vehicles have also been deployed along the most critical locations including DSDBO road, on the mouth of the Galwan Valley, and the road which is going towards the DBO.

The Chinese who have been building their presence faster as the area on their side of the Line of Actual Control is plain, while on the Indian side the construction and improvement of the infrastructure has been slow which delayed the positioning of the tanks and armoured vehicles in Ladakh.

What is Mechanised Infantry BMP 2?
These have now been re-named as Sarath.

It comes equipped with the latest weapon systems and ideal in battlefields where it can move with speed, deadly precision and can surprise the enemy.

It has been powered by 300 HP engine, and is highly mobile vehicle and is capable to meet all tactical requirements on the battlefield.

It has a speed of 65 KMPH, easy steering ability in cross terrain.

The Sarath BMP 2 is also an amphibian vehicle, with a 7 kmPh on water and can go over slopes up to 35 degrees and due to its low weight can be transported by air.

There are armoured plates all around which help in ensuring a high degree of protection to the combatants.

It offers a chameleon-like camouflage with the help of smoke grenades creating a smokescreen.

It comes with a rapid-fire 7.62 MM medium coaxial machine gun, a 30 MM cannon, and a second-generation homing type anti-tank guided missile.

It can neutralise all kinds of land-based and low flying military objects and comes with sharp night vision devices and a low silhouette.

As reported by Financial Express Online, a proposal has been cleared for placing an order for 156 BMP Vehicles which will be manufactured at the Ordnance Factory Medak, at a cost of Rs 1100 crore.

BMP 2 needs to be upgraded

These Soviet Origin vehicles are now being manufactured in India at the Ordnance Factory Board and some are going to be manufactured by private sector companies. These vehicles originally sourced from the erstwhile Soviet Union, changed the concept of Battle Taxi when the BMP was introduced and later went into indigenous production when manufacturing facilities for BMP 2 series of ICV at Medak were set up with Russian collaboration. The vehicle is fully indigenous as comes with everything Made in India.

“Since the BMP 2 will remain the mainstay of the Mechanised Infantry Units, there is an urgent need to further modernize the present model,” a former Mechanised officer told Financial Express Online.

The Russian Company KBP company at DefExpo 2014, offered Berezhok combat module. This module has been offered to help to increase the combat capabilities of the existing BMP 2.

What has Russia offered in the Berezhok Combat Module?

According to sources, the module is fitted with long-range Kornet anti-tank missiles, something Indian Army is keen on.

The major strength of Berezhok (literally – bank of a river, shorefront) combat module lies in its firepower.

The Berezhok has four ATGM tubes when usually such modules have one or two ATGM tubes.

And it can fire two missiles with minimal time interval in one beam to effectively pierce the active defence systems.

Given that it has several missile tubes, the crew can combine, for example, HE fragmentation missiles with HE missiles.

Its grenade launcher can hit targets on the reverse side of the slope and can be also be used as a stationary weapon system.

According to reports, the KBP delegation members in 2014 had a number of exhibitions with officers in the Ministry of Defence held a number of meetings and detailed presentations of the company’s products were made. This included the full-scale sample of Berezhok combat compartment and its simulator and the upgrade package for the BMP 2.

More about Berezhok combat module
It weighs 2.8-3.3 t and is designed for equipping BMP ICVs, APSs manufactured in Russia and abroad.

It comes with up-to-date Kornet family ATGW, 2A42 30-mm automatic gun and AG-30M 30-mm grenade launcher, 7.62-mm PKT machine-gun.

The combination of the flat trajectory of the gun projectiles and lofted trajectory of grenades provide for effective engagement of lightly-armoured and soft-skinned material, anti-tank infantry.

The automatic gun provides for the engagement at the range of up to 4000 m.

Heavily-armoured targets are engaged by the first launch of Kornet family ATGW at ranges of up to 8000 m, and by grenade launcher at the range of up to 2100 m.

Engagement of modern and future tanks, equipped with active protection systems is provided by salvo launch of two missiles within one beam.

The aerial targets can be engaged by Kornet HE guided missile with proximity detonation at ranges up to 10 000 m.

Time to shift from BMP2 to Tata kestrel we can always mate Berezokh to it.

Completely agree with Sir
@bsdhanoa
on the upgradation of the BMP-2 . The easiest & most readily implementable solution here would be the Berezhoek combat module which upgrades the regular BMP-2 turret with new sights, ballistic computer, FCS & 4 Kornet ATGMs .

@Tanmay

I guess that is one of the primary reasons why IA must be now looking around for Whaps. The movement to depth are of Ladakh has to be carried out on roads. Now a BMP can only be carried on its trailer or a large tank transporter-like Tatra.

Whap on the other hand can move by itself, on its own steam and go anywhere the roads go.

Chinese have been using their extensive border raods network for keeping an eye on the LOC. Indians also use wheeled vehicles wherever permitted..

Army's standard station 4X4 Stallion is a five tonner ( Laden weight 12 tons) based on an engine that produces 180 hp . Comparatively TATA Kestrel which is 18-ton class has an engine that can produce 600hp. That makes the difference, particularly on dirt tracks and on slopes.

Whaps would be useful in areas like Depsang, Gogra, Hot springs, Spangur Gaps, Chumar and Demchok ... may be Shipki La, Barahoti plains and In North sikkim and also in Doklam. May be IA can think of deploying about 150 in Tawang.

1) Transporting BMPs and Tanks to DBO itself is a huge issue on these long trailers. Not to mention choking up traffic on main highways like this.

2) Also directly making tracked vehicles like tanks and BMPs drive on tar road damages road surface.

3) As seen here below, the anchor is driving his car at 100 km/hr on a DSDBO stretch!! (4:55 minute)
A battalion/brigade on WhAP can easily repond to incursions with speed + firepower + protectcion.
Which wont be possible on trucks (low protection + low firepower) or tanks/bmps (low speed).
So a trapped company/platoon can be easily reinforced with good firepower with these WhAPs

WhAPs with RCWS, 30mm guns, ATGMs, Anti Aircraft missile system will do wonders to our offensive and QRT stuff
