Why should I think... We are talking about a report which says DRDO is going back to the drawing board... That is it.
WOW. Why I am not surprised.

Fact:
When contacted, a DRDO spokesperson said an inquiry committee has been set up to look into the cause of the accident. “As soon as the report comes, we can share details. Cause is not very clear at present,” the spokesperson added.

Exclusive: Indian Army Getting Long Range ATHOS 2052, Israeli Artillery Guns
Artillery guns play a devastating role on the battlefield as they can maintain sustained rates of fire over prolonged periods turning enemy fortifications in rubbles. Artillery is so important on the battlefield that Artillery is called God of War. In the coming years, the Indian Army is likely to induct several new long-range artillery guns and one of them is likely to be sourced from Israel. Team Guarding India brings you the story of Israeli ATHOS 2052 that will be part of Indian Artillery in the future.


Indian Army is the second largest army on earth which requires a large number of guns. However, after infamous Bofors scandal of the 1980s, the Indian Army could not get any new artillery gun as Indian politicians developed cold feet on each procurement proposal. Finally, with the induction of US-made M-777 lightweight howitzer, by a government to government deal, the ghost of Bofors was put to the grave.

Due to prolonged neglect, presently Indian Army is having Soviet M-46 artillery guns which were designed in the 1960s. After the Kargil war, the Indian Army prepared Field Artillery Rationalisation Plan which decided to use 155 mm as standard caliber for Indian Artillery. The plan envisaged procurement of 2,800 to 3,000 155 mm/52-calibre guns and 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers from different sources by 2027.


To date, the Indian Army has got only 145 M-777 lightweight howitzers from US, 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers which are already deployed at Galwan standoff. Besides foreign artillery guns, the Indian Army also ordered 114 indigenous Dhanush guns and 40 x Arjun Catapults. This means the Indian Army will still need to replace around 2600 artillery guns.

Though DRDO and Indian Private sector have made some promising designs like ATAGS and Bharat-52 long-range guns. However, to meet the massive shortfall generated through years of political neglect, India will still need to import some guns from foreign suppliers. Due to this reason, the Indian Army selected Israeli ATHOS 2052 howitzer.


ATHOS stands for Autonomous Towed Howitzer Ordnance System which is a 155mm/52 caliber long-range artillery gun developed by Israeli Elbit Systems. ATHOS is next-generation towed gun which is highly mobile howitzer with deadly accuracy. ATHOS has been extensively battle-tested by the Israeli Army and is renowned for its accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness. It has several advanced features that were developed to meet modern battle requirements.


ATHOS 2052 is an autonomous and self-maneuverable system that can accurately target enemy locations 40 kilometers away. It has fully computerized systems integrated with inertial navigation and aiming systems including a GPS which allows it automatically to point the gun towards the target without user interference. This feature allows quick firing of artillery shells. ATMOS 2052 can fire 3 rounds in 30 seconds in burst mode, 12 rounds in 3 minutes at intense firing rate, and maintain sustained fire at the rate of 42 rounds per hour which can overcome any target.

For survivability, ATHOS is powered by a diesel engine and can maneuver itself using its own power and specially designed road wheels that give it shoot and scoot capability. These advanced systems ensure that using 4 to 6 crew members ATHOS 2052 can began firing within minutes.


ATHOS can use any 155mm ammunition and has an ammunition loader which enables faster loading of ammunition besides reducing crew fatigue. ATHOS has cutting edge electronic systems for controlling fire, computation of target data, inertial land navigation, and target aiming systems. These systems are integrated into onboard firing computer and gun-laying system which relies on data from the command post, UAVs, or even optical backup sights resulting in assured quick-fire support.


However, the Indian Army realized the biggest advantage of ATHOS was its price which was not only lower than French Trajan gun that is a variant of Nexter gun but also was substantially lower than indigenous Dhanush 155 mm/42 calibre artillery guns that is being produced state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).


Indian Army is presently in cost negotiations with Elbit System for a deal that will result in the procurement of 1580 ATHOS long-range artillery guns valued at around INR 10000 crores or 1.2 billion USD. Out of these 1580 ATHOS guns, 400 will be directly imported from Israel, and rest 1180 guns will be manufactured in India by Bharat Forge under transfer of technology.

Interestingly, Bharat Forge has also partnered with DRDO for producing indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) that is expected to enter service in large numbers, estimated to be more than 1000 artillery guns. One may hope that ATAGS production will also get benefited by ATHOS technology turning them far deadlier.

Team Guarding India hopes that ‘Made in India’ ATHOS will be inducted soon to serve alongside ATAGS and Dhanush artillery guns which will ensure the Indian Army has massive firepower advantage over our adversaries.

Development level firing trials of indigenously developed 155 mm x 39 calibre Garud-V2 Ultra Light Howitzer gun evoked good results at Long Proof Range (LPR) Khamaria in Jabalpur. The gun is being developed by Bharat Forge, Pune, in technical collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The country had procured M777 Ultra Light Howitzer guns from the United States and indigenous production of equivalent guns in India will prove a milestone to augment its strategic strength in cost efficient manner. According to experts, it is the first time when any advanced gun has been indigenously developed in the country and its prototype has been fielded for test firing in Jabalpur.

The Ultra Light Howitzer gun has been designed and developed with rigorous research with the help of DRDO. LPR Khamaria, Commandant, Brigadier, Nishchay Raut, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that development test firing for prototype of 155 mm x 39 calibre gun was started two days back at LPG Khamaria. Total 24 rounds firing 12 rounds in a day was conducted from the prototype gun. Initially, development level firing from prototype gun was up to the mark.

Team of technical experts will review findings of test firing for further improvements to make it ready for further trials. Brigadier Raut informed that since LPR Khamaria got approval for testing of long barrel guns, it is the third biggest gun which is being fielded at LPR Khamaria after successful proof trials of indigenously developed Sharang and Dhanush gun systems.

409 accidents in 5 years
19% related of OFB (as confessed by OFB)

403 % of 19 = 76.57 incidents in 5 years or 15 incidents per year related to OFB (that too during peace time).

so the OFB macher***** think 76 incidents in 5 years is acceptable?
and as usual, these morons blames on firing drills, storage, invalidated design changes.. lol. since when did army (end user) started modifying gun designs ???

Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS)- A Forward Step Towards Atmanirbharta In Defence

The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) program commenced in 2012 by DRDO, with two strategic partners Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Power SED. This product was developed in a record time of30 months and has gone through extensive trials over the last four years and performed admirably with remarkable consistency. ATAGS is one of the most advanced and the world’s first gun which can fire BMCS zone 7. It has achieved a firing range of 48 km which is a record of sorts in the 155mm family.

ATAGS consists of duel power system where hydraulics is used for mobility and gun In/out action whereas electrical power is used for Gun laying and Ammunition Handling System. The system is configured with an all- electric drive that will ensure maintenance free and reliable operation over longer periods of time. The gun system has automatic setting up, laying with high end INS system and automated ammunition handling system which loads shell, charge and primer simultaneously with manual back up for laying system. The gun system has advanced hydraulic drive system which provides effective manoeuvrability in different terrains such as on road, cross country, desert and high altitude areas. The high power Auxiliary Power Unit (made in India) provides effective self-propelled speed, rapid deployment and short response time.

ATAGS has greater than 95% indigenous content. The complete supply chain from raw material to end product lies within the country making it a true embodiment of Make in India’ in Defence Systems. The ATAGS gun system comprises 7463 components of which 4977 are manufactured parts involving about 30,000 manufacturing processes and more than 2,00,000 inspection parameters.

The project now in TRL stage 10 (as per DRDO TRL stages) has been put through mandatory trials over the period of last five years and has completed them successfully. Earlier this month, it entered into its last stages of trials, viz- PSQR (Preliminary Staff Qualitative Requirements) trial, which is done prior to induction of the system. The Gun has already been through rigorous pre-PSQR trials with the user and DRDO team. In these trials BFL Developed Gun system fired a total of 130+ rounds, mostly in Zone 7, and the feedback was that the system has either met the parameters. The Gun fielded by TATA Aerospace and Defence Limited too succeeded in firing 99 rounds. At the 100 th round which was fifth of the rapid fire practice, the gun tube sheared off, thus creating the first unfortunate incident during the entire process of design and development. The cause is being investigated. Some experts blame it on ammunition, while the others wish to look at the tube and the immense pressures it has to withstand. It must be noted that the guns which have till now fired almost 2000 rounds between them can easily withstand pressures up to 560 mega pascals and are the only ones to fire munitions with Zone 7.

As part of the development process, an investigation to identify and rectify the causes is a must. However, it would be premature and detrimental to the cause of building Atmanirbhar Bharat to delay or disrupt the process of development of ATAGS. ATAGS is the first weapon platform which has been designed and developed from scratch and can boast of being truly Indian. Developed by DRDO and two Indian industry partners nurturing a well-established ecosystem of Indian vendors and sub vendors, ATAGS is nation’s pride. We own the design, its IP and all the data which is nearly impossible to get. Assistance from abroad comes at a hefty price and it will be foolhardy not to build on the success that we have achieved so far, notwithstanding minor setbacks. These are well within our capability to resolve.

While it is true that most of the guns that have undergone trials and even during practice fires guns coming from US, France, Germany, Israel, Czech Republic have all had similar incidents and at Lower Zones of firings involving Lower pressures. Blaming higher pressure of ATAGS thus is a bit far-fetched. In almost every case the investigation reports pointed towards ammunition. It is worth mentioning that none of these guns were fired at Zone-7 and neither of them fired as many rounds as ATAGS.

It is in fact a good opportunity to examine the quality and suitability of ammunition which is being produced in India. Without insinuating, or casting aspersions on any organization, it must be noted that India is relatively new to making artillery munitions, fuses and charges (BMCS in this case). Given the extremely high pressures, every part of the munition, be it the shell, driving bands of the projectile or the fuse which has to withstand extremely high angular velocity, every component and subcomponent must respond with zero error. This precision and expertise comes with real time experience and trials. It is unlikely that a foreign vendor will part with core technologies or data to make India Atmanirbhar. In the nation’s interest and of course for the Indian Army’s sake, let us learn to take such incidents in our stride and make a firm resolve to press ahead with determination. India’s ATAGS must succeed.

India has a well developed railway network. Should we consider building very long range large sized rail mounted artillery guns? With integrated air defence assets? The whole platform can be mounted on a set of rail cars powered by locomotives on either end. Will give us tremendous strike power at standoff ranges for cheap. The US is already working on building a 1000 miles range strategic cannon. Our vast railway network deep inside Guj, RJ, Punjab will give the Pakis a nightmare. Same thing can be applied to J&K, Uttarakhand, and North East as well for the Chinese.

Who is talking about BRAHMOS? That's too costly for the ban it carries.

Moreover this Arty on train concept is done and dusted one along with cost factor involved.

Hi there I am new to this forum and I don't know how this forum works. Myself Nachiket I am from Maharashtra. I wanted to know that I have been through VSD closure at age of 3 that is open heart surgery due to by birth dissability. Now I have no any medical condition and treated as normal and fit citizen without any medical disability. Is there any Indian Army Service I can join with my past history ?

If you could pass through the medical & basic training, there are many positions where you could be of service.

VSD closure is a common procedure. Was the surgery a staged procedure due to a syndrome? If not, then if you pass the relevant exams ( physical ) as mentioned by Chinmoy, there should be no issue.

Impractical.
1.) Placing strategic cannons on rail tracks causes the enemy to incentivize destruction of those rail tracks. Those same rail tracks are also critical in supplying your troops. They are the arteries carrying lifeblood of your military punch. The enemy will zero-in their long range weapons on your rail network. Once these get taken out..................Moreover, you would be increasing the traffic on the rail line, delaying supplies.

2.) The alternative is to build special railway lines that would (in wartime) be used exclusively by these cannons. Laying new tracks and building massive cannons would drive the cost of the entire project above that of a massive Brahmos barrage, low cost of the individual arty shell not withstanding.

3.) If you fire unguided rounds through it, the dispersion would be far too wide to be of any military use. Indian Army is not in the business of causing massive collateral damage to the civilians of the enemy state. This is not World War 2.

4.) If you want to use guided rounds, the electronics need to be hardened to withstand extreme G-forces. India is weak in that research.

Better to invest all that money into Railgun technology and Missile inventories.
