I do not know much about this new mountain artillery divisions , but I am happy with the news about the additional 290 pieces . I was hoping that the numbers will be more then just 145 - M777. Now this is first time I saw this news and I like it .

It is a good product but the barrel length is simply too less, i.e. L/27. 120 mm mortars can do the same but with less than half the weight and much higher rate of fire.

Also, the 1000 kg weight portrayed is of the gun not the whole platform. LFG despite being twice as heavy has a longer barrel, i.e. L/37. But if army wishes DRDO might give a shot to make it more lighter, more in the lines of LG 1.

Yes, I've been wanting to ask the same question, how would the OFB 105/37 LFG (E2) compare against this. Although it weighs twice as much as this baby, it's got a range of about 17 Kms & there's already a truck mounted version that was displayed @ Defexpo, it isn't as compact as the Hawkeye but incase the weight can be brought down by use of titanium alloys (something like the Ti6Al4V alloy used in the manufacture of the M777) it ought to be pretty interesting option as well.

Truck as well as BMP version of OFB 105mm SPGH are targeted for Paramilitary, BSF will have the truck variant soon..

Its a good Idea about having same tech of M777 in OFB 105mm barrels to make it lighter..



On the cons that hawk-eye will be using different 105mm shells not OFB made 105mm shells..

Mounting any 105mm on a truck is a pretty useless idea. It nullifies the only advantage a 105 could provide that i.e., heli trans portability while seriously lacking the range and fire power of 155mm.

The reason I mentioned LG1 is that it is light enough to be transported by a Mi-17 maybe to an altitude of 4000-5000 meters along with it's crew and ammo.

If they wish to do something right, then mount the upgraded M-46 (155mm) on a 6x6. Now that's a platform which will be highly mobile, with adequate firepower and range.

Lately, DRDO is coming up with some real crappy ideas like the wheeled BMP which is honestly, one of the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Don`t blame DRDO, They work only when asked to..

I rarely blame DRDO. So far they done more good than harm with their meager budget. It's the sheer lack of ingenuity that baffles me.

I don't expect DRDO to give us a F-35 or Abrams. But i do expect a better rifle than INSAS or 105 mm gun which is actually light. The only example of creativity last seen was Prahaar. But that too has bleak future.
