For "domestic needs?" You do have have low self-esteem...
How does "self-esteem" figure into this discussion ? Don't make stupid comments just for the heck of it. What's wrong with the Marksman, it is a good cost effective solution for our "domestic" security requirements. By that, I mean the police and the paramilitary forces, not the army. We can't just go around buying armored Humvees or similar vehicles for every internal security purpose, we need to devise indigenous solutions for all our requirements, and that's just what Mahindra is doing.

By the way, since you are pretty good at making over-smart comments, I would love to know what does Malaysia produce on its own for its armed forces ?? I don't recall anything. Also, maybe you are not aware that the Malaysian army uses the military version of TATA's 1613 medium truck for troop transport.

even idf uses tata trucks for cargo
30% tata 30% Mercedes 40% man trucks
with a GM motor it's a decent low coast solution

^^ Yeah, that's what ! You always look for decent low cost solutions for your practical needs. Unfortunately, some people are just too short-sighted to understand this.

This is an excellent article in how to build a modern combat vehicle:

Crowd-Driven Combat Support Vehicle Prototype Completed in 98 Days
By tamir_eshel on June 27, 2011 2:18 pm/Defense Update

After 14 weeks of work, rapid prototyping automotive manufacturer Local Motors has completed the manufacturing of the 'Flypmode', the winning design of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s 'Crowd-Driven Combat Support Vehicle' XC2V.

DARPA'S XC2V Design Challenge asked individuals to co-create a vehicle body design for two different missions – Combat Reconnaissance and Combat Delivery & Evacuation. The FLYPMODE, designed by Victor Garcia won the first prize – $7,500 in cash and to be built into a prototype by Local Motors.
The Flypmode is designed as an agile, modular and missionized design, based on the Local Motors built chassis. The side rails are maintained high to support high mobility over cross country terrain. Yet, some design elements are contributing to the safety and protection of the occupants, such as rapid egress, ingress and egress for the driver and co driver, and attachments for carriage of loads and personal gear around the vehicle, adding to the protection of the crew. The vehicle was designed to a maximum loaded weight of 2,721kg (6,000 lbs), therefore, the use of armor protection would be almost impossible, although designers were required to include potential location for '360
The design offers all-round windows providing 360 degree visibility, suitable for the recce role and improving situational threat awareness. The vehicle has an overall length of 4.55 m', width of 2.08 m' and height of 1.98 m'. The internal space can accommodate a driver, commander and between one to three passengers. The rear ramp provides ample space for loads, personal gear or carriage of up to three wounded personnel on standard stretchers.
With winners selected using current methods – the program turns to an analysis of crowd-sourced selection. The next research question becomes, how could crowd-sourced selection contribute to the goals of Defense manufacturing? Fundamental questions remain regarding the role of diversity vice expertise in such design and selection tasks. In the coming weeks DARPA will include potential vehicle end users in alternative engagements. This follow-on study seeks more answers and may allow for a second vehicle to be built. Side-by-side evaluation between crowd-selected and end-user-selected vehicles will be conducted.
Some pics of the vehicle:

It seems the LSV competitors pictured above are kids play compared to the above-pictured minute creation.
Well I didn't say you buy that vehicle again. I'm just saying if some geeks can make a really good combat vehicle in lesss than 100 days then there is no reason India should be content with those copycats... I mean Indian geniuses can do better than those pictured direct descendants (and copies) of Willys and Shoguns...

Is this it?

Huh? Give secondary students a similar farm tractor, wielding machine, torch cutter, steel plate, and access to a junk shop and they'll give you a better rendition of your "local tech..."

Irrelevant In INDIA`S ARMORED THREAD !

Mahindra Rakshak..

On a chilly November morning last year, an army Rakshak jeep crawled slowly along a side road near Sopore in J&K. The six Rashtriya Rifles jawans inside were on alert; in that area danger is always just around the corner. But when the attack came, there was little they could do; with a deafening blast, a scooter, parked by the roadside, blew up firing metal fragments into the side of the jeep. Had it been any other vehicle, lives would almost certainly have been lost. But all six soldiers emerged unscathed; they were lucky to be in an armoured Rakshak, one of just 200 that the army uses in J&K.

Broadsword: Private Sector in Defence: Mahindra Defence Systems: the niche player

Are absolutely any of those 4x4 or 6x4 vehicles being inducted? Is it an ongoing tender?
