Dear All,
Beginner's question for this thread
what is difference between IOC certified variant to FOC certified variant ?
sorry, if this was explained elsewhere.
One big difference is aerial refueling capability.
The rest of the differences are mostly ‘test qualifications’ for BVRAAM, Flight envelope etc - most of which might retrospectively become available to IOC aircraft!

There is no requirement for such numbers, also by the time we'll produce 83rd MK1A MK2 will be ready for production, if everything goes as planned. But I think they should go for 83+40=123 MK1A. 83 is not large number to support pvt industry.

If MK1A is a good platform and satisfies IAF's ASQR then I think 123 is the right number.
Yeah you might be right by the time of delivery of Tejas Mk 1a. Tejas MK 2 will be ready.

First let IAF order 40+. All are playing Merry go round right now.

#BREAKING Enhanced Tejas MK-1A to be cleared soon

Ministry of defense is likely to seal a deal with state-owned HAL in coming months for production of 83 Tejas MK-1A fighter aircraft with Five major enhancements along with various minor changes to the aircraft’s avionics once the committee which is looking into the price quoted by the HAL clears the last hurdle said sources close to idrw.org.

The unit cost of each Tejas MK-1A fighter aircraft had raised few eyebrows after it was pegged over the unit cost of Sukhoi-30MKI which are manufactured by HAL locally in India. HAL had countered the argument by saying that specification of the Sukhoi’s have been same since 2005-6 when it entered local production and Tejas MK-1A has much more modern and had more expensive components and sub-systems which have lead to price escalations over price quoted for the Tejas MK-1.

Tejas MK-1A will share outer air frame, engine and other basic components with the MK-1 but will come with Internally revamped LRU’s for easy maintenance and dead space management to lower downtime of the aircraft further. Other enhancement will be AESA Radar to be supplied by an Israeli company, along with In-flight refueling probe to be supplied by British Company, Cobham Quartz radome again supplied by British Company, along with Self-Protection Jammer (SPJ) Pod developed locally in India, along with some last minute addition to the avionics which will be added later to the aircraft.

Out of 83 Tejas MK-1A to be ordered soon by IAF, 73 will be single seater aircraft and 10 will be Trainer aircraft. HAL will later upgrade all 32 single Seater Tejas MK-1 to the MK-1A configuration once the production of MK-1A is completed within five years after entering production which is most likely to happen by 2021.

HAL production line in Bangalore will achieve 16 aircraft per year rate from 2019-2020 on wards and HAL is also augmenting its Nashik facility as an additional facility which can manufacture 5 additional aircraft per years and if required, Nashik facility can achieve 8 additional aircraft per year in total 24 per year if requested by IAF which will help complete order for 83 jets within three and half years.

So 40 Tejas mark 1 delivery will be completed in December 2020. Damn it is good news. It is faster than 36 Rafale delivery. I am very much happy by this news.

India selects IAI/Elta EL/M 2052 AESA radar and EL/M-8222 (Wide Band) SPJ EW suite for Tejas LCA Mk 1A.

India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a deal with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)/Elta Systems for 83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars and an equal number of electronic warfare (EW) suites to be fitted onto the Mk 1A variant of the indigenously developed Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Industry sources told Jane’s that the deal for ELM-2052 fire control radars and pod-mounted ELL-8222WB (wide band) self-protection jamming pods was “quietly” signed in late October after IAI/Elta emerged as the lowest bidder for the two compatible systems.

The IAI/Elta products were selected over systems fielded by rivals Thales and Saab, which had also responded to HAL’s December 2016 request for quotation for AESA radars and EW suites.

Production of Tejas Mk-I in IOC configuration is under progress, out of 20 IOC jets, nine have been delivered. This will be followed by production of 20 aircrafts in FOC configuration. Delivery of all these aircraft is likely to be completed by 2022.

Learnings from IOC and FOC-configured LCA Tejas Mk-I is being used in the development of Mk-IA which will incorporate advanced, state-of-the-art systems like BVRAAM , Unified Electronic Warfare System, AShRAAM and upgraded avionics.

This above report and the article by AjaiShukla has been contradicted by the most recent news report:
https://economictimes.indiatimes.co...e-deal-for-lca-tejas/articleshow/67267200.cms

AjaiShukla claimed that Elisra (which co-developed D-29 with BEL) was prohibited by Israel to participate in the tender. Now it appears it's Elisra that actually won the bid!
If they're developing 'prototypes' initially - then it does appear that unlike Elta's off-the-shelf offering, Elisra might be reusing much of the D-29 development effort to 'customize' the EW suite to Tejas needs.

Contract to Elisra is worth about INR 170 crore ($25 million). Is it for development work or they are providing the equipment?

1) will they provide transfer of technology and then BEL or HAL would produce it here?
I am speculating here:
In all probability they might get into a similar arrangement like that of D-29, EO pods etc....where critical systems will come from Israel, but the casings, power module etc will be indigenous.
