India and Nigeria were collaborating to boost the West African country's air defences, Indian High Commissioner Mahesh Sachdev has said.

Both countries had a long standing defence cooperation, shared values and shared history, Xinhua quoted Sachdev as saying at a forum in Kaduna state.

"We are very keen to promote this in the context of different kinds of challenges that Nigeria faces and we want to contribute to the enthronement of democratic values and tolerance in Nigeria society," Sachdev said.

"We are waiting for our Nigerian brothers to indicate the areas in which they will like us to collaborate with them and we will be happy to consider everything they request for," the Indian envoy said.

Relations between Nigeria and India have always been warm and friendly.

India established a diplomatic mission in Nigeria in 1958, even before Nigeria became independent in 1960. With a population of 158 million and considerable revenue from oil exports, Nigeria is the largest trading partner of India in Africa. Bilateral annual trade turnover exceeded $8.7 billion in 2009-10, according to the website of the Indian embassy to Nigeria.

Over 100 Indian companies are estimated to have footprints in Nigeria. Prominent among them being Bharti Airtel, Tata, Bajaj Auto, Birla Group, Kirloskar, Mahindra, Ashok Leyland and New India Assurance.

There is an estimated 35,000 people of Indian origin in Nigeria. The community runs an Indian Language School in Lagos with nearly 2,000 students.

Who cares. They have oil and money. We need both.
Was just wondering if their national threats are favorable to Indian agendas, we wouldn't even want to lose political leverage. Anyways....

India should think of first replacing its own antiquated weaponry before helping nigeria.Indians must thank Gen.V.K.singh and that lady of Joint secretary rank in PMO who leaked his letter to let indian public know about the state of indian armed forces weaponry.

Apples and Oranges.

India helping smaller nations to build stronger mutual diplomatic bonds has little bearing on India's own defence needs.

Diplomacy and Military need not always walk hand in hand (an important lesson for Pakistan to learn).

Not that it will have any bearing on your trolling, but just to put it out there for all the other sane people, who may not be aware of your antics, to not get detracted by your dribble.

First, modernize our 97% obsolete air defense and once we are self-sufficient, then help Nigeria.

Indian AD weaponry is indeed old, But not the SAMs, SA-6 are very good sam and have advantage over Akash..

though what Indian Army need is mass amount of SAMs which is addition to SA-6 sams..

This is a good move, although I would prefer a better focus on Eastern Africa which directly impacts the Indian Ocean rim. This starts with Egypt and Ethiopia in the north to Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa in the south.

Nigeria is projected to be the next best thing that could happen to Africa. If there is peace in the country, it has great potential.
