5 things you need to know about K-15, India's underwater ballistic missile

Moving a step closer to completing its nuclear triad, India today successfully test fired its K-15 ballistic missile from an underwater platform in Bay of Bengal. Nuclear triad is the ability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from land, air and sea.

Here are a few things you should know about K-15:

*The medium range ballistic missile has a strike range of around 1500 kilometres.

* It is a submarine-launched ballistic missile capable of being launched from some submarines. Modern variants usually deliver multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles each of which carries a nuclear warhead and allows a single launched missile to strike several targets.

*K-15 is part of the family of underwater missiles being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation for the Indian strategic forces' underwater platforms.

*This missile will help India to achieve the capability of launching nuclear warheads from underwater facilities.

*US, France, Russia and China are the only other countries that have this type of missile capability.

earlier K5 was assume to be of 3000km range.
DD report only adds to the confusion. The K15 was always touted as a 700 kms range missile. No less "officially". Now it's 1500 kms. K5 was no project at all. It was K15 and K4, K4 being 3500 kms range.

With 6 mins of flight time, I said yesterday it could be a 1500-2000 kms range missile but then all kinds of reports kept coming.

My conclusion is that since they have said that they have tested this missile 10 times, it is the Sagarika missile. It was always a 1500 kms range missile but for some reason they kept saying 700 kms range. What this also means is that Shaurya is also a 1500 kms range missile and this we now talk at full weapons load of one ton. There seems to be no scope to MIRV this because of its range and it's quasi ballistic nature. It will beat enemy BMD as it is said to have terminal maneuverability. Shaurya will therefore become the primary missile of deterrence against Pak with its cannistor launch and 1500 kms range. As will the SLBM K5/K15/BO5/Sagarika whatever they named this missile from anywhere under the Arabian sea to cover the whole of Pak.

AFAIK no Indian BM has MIRV capability till now, A-V will hav this capability, supposedly
the article also doesn't say that BO-5 has MIRV capability, but rather posts just a generalisation
as far as range is concerned, the range of 700km is with full payload of 1 ton
range can improved with lesser payload.
so its strike range is pure media speculation.

Re: India successfully tests submarine launched ballistic missile K-5/

I've been flooded with queries about the confusion over whether today's test was the K-15. Confusion sprung from news agencies, including PTI, calling it the K-5 (perhaps because the official project name is B-05). This is to confirm to you that today's test was the K-15. The intermediate range K-4/5 is still in development and hasn't seen a test yet.

Re: India successfully tests submarine launched ballistic missile BO-5

looks like gas generator is build into the missile

red part must be gas generator and blue part is first stage

what is most interesting is the fact that Shaurya missile has same cold launch gas generator to get the missile out of launch tube.
What is that cap like thing...?:confused::confused:

doc,

The canisterised missile is launched vertically, the nose cap prevents water from entering the 'air-intake' during the underwater flight. Once the missile emerges from the water, the sensors provide the "out of water command" and the nose cap is fired for turning the missile in the desired direction to hit the target

Brahmos sub launch had tech developed for K15, Russians did't provide the tech to us. Therefore we develop it ourself. BTW PJ-08 was earlier name of K15 as per chor Gupta.

Added later on

Design of cap make it easy for the missile to move through the water.

Re: India successfully tests submarine launched ballistic missile

IIRC, some official had said that the next rest will be from a sub and not a pontoon. We had a discussion here speculating either there could be a test from the Arihant itself which validates both the Arihants integration as well as the technology of the missile.

IF it was fired from another sub, then it means A LOT MORE than just final missile. It means India has modified more subs capable of launching a nuke missile and we don't have to rely only on the Arihant. May be the Kilos have been modified. That is wonderful news all round.
Recently we received the Sindhurakshak from russia after the refit... Please check the timing of both.

Russia hands over refitted submarine to India

Still there are more secretes about this project. Most likely Arihant has completed it's sea trial with this launch.:thumb:

My heartily Congratulations to DRDO & it's team. Excellent project management.
