Can Astra be used in an Iron dome kind of Defense mechanism?
We know that it is difficult to punch through the Himalayas and that our waters will mostly be calm.
But that also means that we need double proofing on our Air Defense. IMO this is area where we will be tested the most.
Whenever and whoever intends to hit us, would want our retaliation capability to be taken out.
If I were the enemy, I'd start by raining missiles on key cities and Military installations.
Air defense

V, our BMD is just a start, Akash missile was good platform for us to understand how air to air work, once we finish with Astra, we can extend the range of BVR. DRDO has already said about iron dome type of missile under its plans. Finally Astra is costly for iron dome type operation.

I think astra is one generation behind from current aam ;current aam uses dual seeker.

3.8-metre long and more than 300 kg heavy.

In the latest launch, the 3.8-metre long and more than 300 kg heavy Astra flew at Mach-3 — three times the speed of sound.

As @Kunal sir has said it must be launched in SAM mode for that they must have modified the missile so that it will get required height that is why this weight (guess).

It is DDM error. Nothing to do with SAM or A2A version.

Stick a French seeker on it and it works. That is about how things go. ;)

India successfully test fires Astra missile third time in a week

India successfully test fires Astra missile third time in a week

Bhubaneswar, Dec 24 (IANS) India Monday successfully test fired its indigenously developed Astra air-to-air interceptor missile from a defence base in Odisha for the third time within a week, an official said.
The beyond-visual-range missile was tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, about 230 km from here. The missile intercepted a simulated target.
"There was no actual target. It successfully intercepted a simulated target at an altitude of 4 km," ITR director M.V.K.V. Prasad told IANS.
Astra is envisaged to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in the head-on mode at a range of 80 km and in tail-chase mode at 20 km.
The scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation which developed the missile had earlier conducted successful tests of the Astra missile from the same base Friday and Saturday.
"The exercise carried out Monday was to test the missile's interception capability and high manoeuvring," he pointed out.

Good news after good news..

Hope to see Tejas shooting Astra Soon..
Then all the talk of tejas limited to just 50 km range missiles (because of missiles like python or derby or the russian missiles) and bud headed comments like MIG-21 ++ will be history.

Also astra will be the most modern missile in IAf, since it is powered through out the flight like the promos of METEOR you posted in lca tejas-mk-2 thread, so it's design will be more modern than the present missiles IAF has.

Also it's data link with TEJAS or any other IAF fighter too will be more secure and will have some unique anti jamming capacity and would be an unknown quantity to the world ,unlike the other foreign missiles in IAF..

Also if ramjet propulsion is added like meteor in future versions ,increasing it's speeds to mach 4 plus, tejas armed with this missile will be more than the match for the upgraded pakistani F-16s. SO with 120 km range radar tracking and targeting capability of tejas will be an exact fit with this missile's range.

In 2004 the new demand from IAF for inclusion of missiles of this range and weight class led to strengthening of wing area and subsequent redesign of the airframe which was the reason for the delay in the TEJAS program as per open source report.

None other than the then scientific advisor to PM PARTHASARATHy wrote an article on it.So this redesign and the delay made tejas a more potent weapon platform not a delayed inferior obsolete platform as it is often criticized.

Which eventually led to empty weight increase by a ton.because these missiles with longer range impose a higher stress on airframe due to their weight and stress requirement during supersonic flight regime.

The launch of the Astra missile for the second day on Saturday from Chandipur, Odisha, was deadly in its accuracy. An air-to-air missile, it was launched from a fixed launcher on the ground and homed in on its target — Lakshya, a pilotless target aircraft (PTA) flying 15 km away. The warhead exploded within a metre of Lakshya, destroying it.
In the latest launch, the 3.8-metre long and more than 300 kg heavy Astra flew at Mach-3 — three times the speed of sound.

From the ground is the most important word to note here.
Because a missile launched from the ground will be naturally more heavy as it have to start off from sea level and wont have the initial acceleration of a missile launched from fighter flying at supersonic speeds from high altitudes.

So we have to wait for confirmation whether it was the version of air launched one.

what s the funda with simulated target ?

are they testing the simulation technology ?

come on , so only once it hit actual target and twice it hit simulated target in space.
