India Sends Stealth Warships to South China Sea
The Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet sailed out today on an operational deployment to the South China and North West Pacific.
On May 18, four ships of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet set out for a two and a half month long operational deployment to the South China Sea and North Western Pacific, according to a recent press statement by the Indian Ministry of Defense.
“In a demonstration of its operational reach and commitment to India’s ‘Act East’ policy, the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, under the command of Rear Admiral SV Bhokare, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, sailed out today,” the press release states.
The small naval force that left the Indian shores today consists of the 6,200-ton Shivalik-class guided-missile stealth frigates Satpura andSahyadr armed, among other things, with supersonicanti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles; the 27,550-ton Deepak-class fleet tanker Shakti, one of the largest surface warships in the Indian Navy; and the 1,350-ton Kora-class guided missile corvette Kirch, armed with sub- and super-sonic anti-air and anti-ship missiles.
The dispatch of the fleet has the dual purpose of strengthening military diplomatic ties and enhancing inter-operability with other navies. The Indian warships are slated to make port calls at Cam Rahn Bay in Vietnam, Subic Bay in the Philippines, Sasebo in Japan, Busan in South Korea, Vladivostok in Russia, and Port Klang in Malaysia.
“The visits to each port will last four days and are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing inter-operability between the navies. During the stay in harbor, various activities such as official calls and professional interaction between naval personnel of both the nations have been planned,” the defense ministry notes.
The fleet will also conduct passing exercises (PASSEX) with other navies to practice cooperation and “showing the flag” in a region “of vital strategic importance to India,” according to the defense ministry. The fleet’s operational deployment will culminate in its participation in Exercise Malabar, a naval exercise held with the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), to take place off Okinawa in Japan in the second half of June.
As I reported previously, Japan’s participation is not new—the JMSDF have joined in 2007, 2009, and 2014 respectively—but this year will be the first time that Japan is not a foreign invitee but rather a permanent member of the annual naval exercise.
The ships of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, the largest out of a total of three fleets, are distributed among bases on the Indian east coast including Kolkata, Paradip, and Chennai, as well as on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The total strength of the fleet is around 60 vessels. The Eastern Naval Command is headquartered at Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

I'm not pleased. We have no sea dispute with China, we have a land dispute, let us stick to that. We should not act in any manner which benefits our other adversary, America. In fact, we should vehemently resist any attempts to form an anti-China coalition in SCS and use it as a bargaining chip. The situation should be such that unless India permits, US can't form any coalition in SCS. Give nuclear weapons to Vietnam and make them self sufficient. This will take away their need to be a part of any coalition. We should play spoilsoprt against American interests everywhere we can and squeeze handsome concessions out of them for any support we give them directly or indirectly. This "natural allies" business is bullshit. It means that our goals completely align and therefore India can be taken for granted since we have already declared prematurely that we will challenge China in SCS. Our narrative with the US must be "we don't wish to fight with China, so we have no inherent national interest in sending any ships to do your dirty work. We might send them, though, if you do *so and so things in return.."

*so and so things : US should cancel sale of F16 to Pakistan, cancel military aid, allow India to be a part to the Afghanistan reconciliation dialogue, US should withdraw discriminatory visa policies, and settle the WTO case against Indian solar companies amicably. US media will not broadcast anything about the internal matters of India like Kashmir or any other Christian missionary funded 'intolerance' drama.

If they do all these things, maybe, just maybe then we will send one ship to SCS. If not, they we give weapons to Vietnam and make them self-sufficient and even they will pull out of the US alliance.

China Declares Indian Oil Exploration in South China Sea ‘Illegal’

China is consolidating its newfound authority over the international South China Sea by declaring it controls international waters off the coast of independent Vietnam.
“India’s intention to once again explore for oil in the disputed waters of the South China Sea is an unwise move, as it will further complicate the maritime disputes and do a disservice to maintaining the positive momentum that has been achieved in China-India ties,” declared the state-run China Daily, as translated by the Times of India.

I know we have REAL interests in the SCS, I am only saying that we must not be overly revealing of our needs, or we will get exploited by the US if we appear overly willing to play along with the US. We must ACT as if it doesn't matter to us. If we appear desperate then we have a weaker hand on the negotiating table.

They are sending nuclear submarines to dock in Sri Lanka without any fear and we are scared to drill for oil when invited by an ally?

There is no way India can handle China alone in any manner . It will always have to be part of an alliance. You can thank leaders of the past for this who ensured the nation stayed weak so it could be easily plundered . In every
Diplomatic or border issue with China India always lost going alone.

Just to have these kind of issues, they kept Indian military weak.

So that they can justify the reason to join the socialist bandwagon.

Sir, I am not talking about SCS. Take it in general.

UPA kept Indian Army and IAF as it is and raised 100 ship Navy.

This idiots, right not, they are dying to raise 200 Navy ships, but they are not happy to order F/A-18 as MRCA for IAF.

When we asked about it, all of sudden they realize that they don't have enough money this year.

Does it tell the story.........!

^^
On top of it, can some one guide us the payment terms for such this huge deal.

If I am not wrong, there is no need to pay all the money upfront for all the F/A-18s.

It would be interesting to know what route the Indian naval ships would be following in the SCS en-route to Vietnam, South Korea and Japan. If it's within the so called nine-dash line that China claims as its territorial waters, then expect some fireworks and verbal diarrhea from the Chinese! :blah:

Not much of an issue for commercial shipping. But the Chinese may create a furor as an Indian naval flotilla would be passing through.

Indian navy ships in South China Sea; China sees red

Much to the ire of China, four Indian Naval warships entered the disputed South China Sea on Saturday on an operational deployment for two and half months there and in the North West Pacific. During the period, they would also participate in the prestigious maritime exercise with the US and Japan navies, Malabar-2016.
China claims to have territorial ownership in the South China Sea, but Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan dispute the claim. The area is accepted as International waters by several countries.
Though movements of Indian ships through these waters have been challenged by Chinese Navy in the past, it has not flared up to a direct physical confrontation ever.
Indigenously-built guided missile stealth frigates, Indian Navy ships Satpura and Sahyadri, commanded by Captain AN Pramod and Captain KS Rajkumar respectively, INS Shakti, a sophisticated fleet support ship, commanded by Captain Gagan Kaushal and INS Kirch an indigenous guided missile corvette commanded by Commander Sharad Sinsunwal are participating in this deployment.
Even as China has reportedly expressed concern over this, the deployment also comes close on the heels of the US and India holding their first Maritime Security Dialogue on May 16 to discuss "Asia-Pacific maritime challenges, naval cooperation, and multilateral engagement", according to the US embassy in New Delhi. US too has taken objections on what it has called China's increasing 'militarisation' in the region.
During this overseas deployment, the Indian ships will make port calls at Cam Rahn Bay (Vietnam), Subic Bay (Philippines), Sasebo (Japan), Busan (South Korea), Vladivostok (Russia) and Port Klang (Malaysia), Indian Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma said. He said the visits to each port will last four days and are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing inter-operability between the navies.
Notably, Indian president Pranab Mukherjee will begin a four-day trip of China beginning May 24.

There is no point in having a navy of this size if it can't be a Blue Water one. Gone are the times when we were defensive and passive. Its time for others to know if they can play, we can play too, and harder.

BTW there is good possibility of this deployment having sea floor mapping as primery objective. Since China is aggressively changing the landscape of south china sea by erecting artificial islands, regular mapping is necessary. Not to forget where INS Arihant will go on patrol on any deployment. Its SBLMs having a range of just 3500 kms gives a good vivid hint.

The timing is wrong.
We are not yet ready to show our hand. We should finish the modernization of our forces first; not to mention the ongoing developments, upgrades, rearming and resupply etc.

The timing is never perfect, today is always better than tomorrow.

We will not be able to match China man-to-man, machine-to-machine in next several decades. Hence if we decide to wait then we may have to wait forever.

India has been forced to extend her reach because if we don't reach SCS, then China will certainly trap us in our own neighbourhood. We have been pushed in a situation where Offence is the best Defence, we don't have an option.

Notice how cautious the deployment is? A missile boat, two frigates, and an oiler. No destroyers. Wish they at least sent a Delhi-class vessel to show PLAN 052C destroyers the finger.
