KS172- Joint Venture between India's DRDO and Russias NPO Novator.

SpeciFications :

- It is an ultra Long Range AAM with a Development Range of 400KMs To Target AEW/AWAC Type High Value Aircrafts.

- Sole Carrier in the Indian AF will be the Su-30MKI

Features ( Dimensions) :

- 1.4 Meter long Rocket Booster

- Weight 748Kgs

- Core Diameter 0.40 Meter , Total Lenght 6.01 Meters , Span .61 Meters

- Launched by a Solid-propellant Tandem Rocket Booster

- The KS 172 will attack its Targets with an adaptive high explosive ( HE) fragmentation warhead.

Guidance

- Secure Data-Linked Based inertial Navigation System for MidCourse Guidance ( This would probably be done by AWACS or the 2-3 MKIs Working in Tandem with their Mini AWACS Capability)

- Active Radar Homing for its Terminal Phase.

-The missile will be used against air targets flying at altitudes from 3m to 30km with speeds up to 4,000km/h and manoeuvring at up to 12g.

DRDO and NPO will jointly Develop:
- An Active Homing Radar Seeker with a Wide Lock-On Range Which is able to recieve targeting data from the launch AC.

- Design a combined Gas/AeroDynamic Control system with 3d TVC . Provides High Manoeuvrability irrespective of launch Conditions and allows for missle launch with AC in super Manoeuvrability flight mode.

- Create and Adaptive Rapid Reaction Autopilot Which Optimises with Missile Stabilization and control Parameters within the firing range.

- Development of Special Interaction Logic btween the KS-172 Explosive Fuse and Guidance system Which ( In addition to structural and config features) gurantees absolute immunity of the Warhead detonation system to Jamming

The KS-172 may have been based on the airframe of the 9K37M1 Buk-M surface-to-air missile. It used a two-stage rocket engine with a flight speed of about Mach 4 and a claimed maximum range of 400 km (250 mi). The AAM-L flies to the vicinity of the target by inertial navigation, then activates its own active radar for terminal homing.

The AAM-L missile is intended for use against Airborne Early Warning, tanker, and maritime patrol aircraft, giving an air force the ability to attack these vital assets without having to engage their fighter escorts. Enhanced-range versions have also been suggested as possible anti-satellite weapons.

What the status of it ? i mean its in development or in production .
sir its certainly in developmental stage and not in production otherwise we would have had much more news and publicity.i think the new seeker system is the most important part and i think its in development at the moment

This is going to be an AWAC-KILLER as I posted in NDR it maybe developmental but pakistani eeryie has 400km range and so does this missile so in effect their
AWAC'S or any air radar capability they have will be destroyed and we will dominate their airspace and bomb them into oblivion.

how difficult for it could be to serve in a2g ar role;);)
Sagar, this is air to air missile. Not air to aground bomb/missile. It is not designed for that role.

wouldn't a 400 KM range break any moratorium on the export/joint development of Missiles more than it?? Does it apply to AAM??

When this Missile becomes Operational it can be called the Father of all AAM! :)

i think this 400 km range applies only for balistic missile, not sure though because both india and russia had to reduce the range of brahmos to 390 km although it is not a ballistic missile, but a cruise missile.

Don't worry too much about being correct when nuclear proliferation is rampant and our security is at stake.

India plans to use Russian experience and equipment in its space programme to send a man into orbit, informed Madhavan Nair, the Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Russia and India share a Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Activities in the Field of Human Spaceflight Programme, which was signed during the visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to India in 2008.

“We are considering a manned space flight of our own. Russia has vast experience in man-controlled spaceflight which we hope it will share with us to help the Indian space programme. We plan to perform the first Indian space flight on a Russian space vessel,” said Madhavan Nair to the press-service of Russian space corporation Roskosmos, summing up the results of his visit to Russia.

Not only ballistic missiles but any unmanned delivery systems capable of delivering WMD. And the Range limit is 300KM.(condition applied)

not sure though because both india and russia had to reduce the range of brahmos to 390 km although it is not a ballistic missile, but a cruise missile.
Report says Brahmos have a range of 290 KM

MTCR is described specifically for unmanned delivery systems capable of delivering WMD, supposing it will not be able to carry any NBC warheards it shouldn't go against MTCR guidelines [/QUOTE]

When this Missile becomes Operational it can be called the Father of all AAM! :)

400 kms is quite a lethal distance. But, how effective will it be? In more accurate terms, how accurate will it be?

Plus, we also need a radar capable of scanning 400 kms if we were to use this missile. Does this mean that it can also be guided by our AWACS ???

It depends upon the seeker but I think at least initial tracking should be done through a AEW&C if 400KM since fighter radars would fall short in range. However other ways of guiding the missile cannot be ignored.

this missile is analagous to a shark hunting a whale.
Personally I'm a little skeptical about the missile. After this missile has been fired, can the AWACS have any countermeasures against this missile? And, can the AWACS try any evasive manouvers? (I know its a huge plane, but am still asking)

Can it be defeated by any jammers etc? And, even though 400kms is a huge range, I think it may not be as nimble as other missiles of shorter range...

And, I'm pretty sure it's darn expensive...hehehehe...:(:(:(

India, Iran, Russia mull ways to take on Taliban

24 Mar 2009, 0236 hrs IST, Indrani Bagchi, TNN

NEW DELHI
: It's still part of conversations, but old partners, India, Iran and Russia, are dusting out an old mechanism to take on the Taliban
in Afghanistan.

All three countries are still at an exploratory stage, but some articulated realities and possibilities are spurring on these discussions. First, the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan is giving the Taliban and other Pakistan-sponsored jihadists a growing space. Second, a fear that the US and NATO, in their eagerness to craft out an exit strategy in Afghanistan, might fall for a Pakistan-assisted scheme to put some Taliban elements dressed up as "moderate" in charge of governing Afghanistan.

The first time this will be discussed more fully will be during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's ministerial meeting in Moscow on March 27. Both Iran and India will attend the SCO meet. Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki was in Mazar-e-Sharif last weekend to meet officials from Afghanistan and Tajikistan. India has been much more quiet. But Russia, in its capacity as SCO chairman, is taking a more hands-on position.

It has indicated that Iran might be more comfortable working with Russia and India under the SCO rubric than the US-led effort. The US and Nato are organizing a "big tent" meeting in The Hague on March 31, also on Afghanistan.

Iran has a lot of clout inside Afghanistan due to its ethnic and religious connections with the ethnic Tajiks, Uzbeks and Hazaras. India has steadily built up a lot of equity with its relentless commitment in the developmental field.

Russia has recently entered the Afghanistan equation, and has reportedly allowed the US to transport weaponry through its territory to reach Afghanistan. Currently, the US uses Pakistan, which comes under regular Taliban fire. Interestingly, among the other possibilities, the US is also looking at using the India-built Zaranj-Delaram road from Chahbahar port to enter Afghanistan from Iran. Iran, therefore, is emerging as a key player yet again in the Afghan sweepstakes.

The tri-nation strategy is not yet clear, apart from the fact that the Taliban have to be roundly defeated. This time, there is no Northern Alliance that ensured the defeat of the Taliban in 2001. So for an alternate strategy to work, a different structure would have to be cobbled together.

What is not yet clear is whether there can be some kind of coordination between Afghanistan's neighbours and the Nato-US initiative. Nevertheless, the great game is now fully joined.
