people have a misconception that soviets were the real friends and russians are businessmen they must know in detail because the western dominated indian media is out to tarnish russian and indian image for the benifit of their masters

If Russia was true friends, they would not be charging Western prices for Soviet era machines.

the US and USSR were both 'friendly' with India even during cold war era offering aids to India (as evident in Sino-India conflict) in her 'non-alignment' shield.

In comparison China was confronting with both throughout 1960-70's, very isolated. Her ideological frenzy against Soviet Union at that time was particularly incomprehensible

In this regard I must salute to India's success in geopolitics and 'diplomacy'.

Or wasn't it a 'blessing' in disguise that China split up from Soviet as early as possible?

Honestly .... True friendship does not exists today between India and Russia. It did exist between Soviet Union and India. Its a huge difference. I dont think India has had any defence related problems during the Soviet era. Soviets were close enough to even help us during any war. Currently Russia will help us politically and never aid us during battle. Besides Russia has taken India for granted thinking they will pay for anything we give them coz they depend on us and can afford to loose our support.

I hate to say this but fact remains that in todays world if India needs an ally close enough to help during any war, there exists none.

That is geopolitics. On the bright side, none of our "enemies" have such an ally either.

If India wants to be a global superpower or even just a regional power, she will have to self-sufficient when it comes to defence. Have you ever heard of a superpower that relies on other countries for protection>

USA thought more about their relationship with China than it did with India during the Cold War. Nixon wanted China to invade.

Even a superpower like US needed NATO in Afghanistan and Iraq. So those days are gone ..

Do you really think the US needed NATO help in Astan and Iraq? NATO sent forces because they were required to as per the mutual security clause in the NATO charter. The US spends more on defense than the rest of NATO combined.

As they say, there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. What soviet did for india was part of its strategy to keep india in its camp. US would have done the same if india was in its camp. Everyone does things keeping its interests in mind and not for the love of anyone. Elders say ghor kalyug aa gaya hai, bhai bhai to kaat ta hai. You can forget about anyone in this big bad world to be friends. People meet when interests co incide or when their own interests are met. US,UK and other western interests coincided, Pakistan befriended China as its interests were met by it and vice versa.

Yes the erst while Soviet Union had been one of the strongest and one of the most help ful friend that an extremely poor ,backward and weak India ,could ever have even hoped for.

Even after Soviet Union 's dissolution India russia friendship has been strong as is evident from the fact Russia DID NOT SELL ARMS to pakistan even when Russia was itself going through financial crisis in early 1990s

GOD BLESS RUSSIA. LONG LIVE INDO RUSSIAN FRIENDSHIP.

Care to explain that analogy a bit more?
I think its like this _ India & Russia are two boys who are friends. Then there's China. It pretends to be a girl & and trys to seduce Russia. The Russians believe that. But India knows that's a dude. If china succeeds, Russia would get the shock of its life. But anyway China manages to weacken the bond between India & Russia.
