The Indian Air Force will in the next few weeks finish weaving a security web with the Israeli SPYDER air defence missile system on the western borders.

The Indian Air Force will in the next few weeks finish weaving a security web with the Israeli SPYDER air defence missile system on the western borders in a bid to strengthen its preparedness to strike down any aerial threat from Pakistan.

The induction process was delayed by over three years due to the nonavailability of Czech-made Tatra trucks on which the missiles were to be carried.

"The SPYDER missile system is already in the process of deployment along the western borders where it will help in tackling any aircraft, cruise missile, surveillance plane or drone that tries to violate our airspace," senior defence sources told MAIL TODAY.

WHAT IS SPYDER?

The SPYDER (Surface-to-air PYthon and DERby) is a low-level, quick reaction missile (LLQRM) to neutralise hostile targets up to 15 km away and at heights between 20 and 9,000 metres. The Python-5 is currently the most capable air-to-air missile (AAM) in Israel's inventory, while the Derby is an active radar homing AAM that provides the SPYDER missile system with a fireand-forget option.

"The IAF will use the SPYDER along with the made-in-India Akash surface-to-air missile which has a little longer effective range of 25 km as part of a layered approach to defend vital assets and locations in the country," the sources stated.

DEAL MADE IN 2008

The SPYDER deal was completed by the IAF with Rafael and Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) in 2008 and supplies were to begin in three to four years. But the process got delayed due to the unavailability of the Tatra trucks, which got mired in a controversy over bribery allegations.

"Due to the lack of heavy specialised trucks, changes had to be made in the contract with the vendors and a made-in-India truck has been used for carrying the SPYDER system, which has been tested extensively resulting in delays," the sources said.

Both the SPYDER and Akash are all-weather missiles and the process to seek and engage an aggressive aircraft or missile is automatic. Besides aircraft and UAVs, they can also neutralise lowlevel cruise missiles.

The IAF has taken a slew of measures to strengthen its air defence capabilities in the recent past as it is also going to deploy another air defence system called the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) system from Israel, which can strike down targets at 50-70km.

The force would receive a major boost when it starts getting the S-400 air defence missile system from Russia, which can take out targets at 400 km and can be very effective against enemy AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) and cruise missiles at great distances.

Of late there has been much activity in this sphere
1. A spate of missile tests,
2. Artillery systems being ordered and speedily inducted,
3. Missile defence systems being tested and inducted (or ordered) with a mix of homegrown and imported stuff- Akash, MRSAM, Spyder, PDV, S400,
4. Emergency stockpiling of arms and ammunition for battle readiness.

Is GoI reading some signs and preparing for what's to come? A limited conflict with Pak/Cheen?

I certainly think so. Howitzers are also being procured on urgent basis to cover the mountains of arunachal. These can be carried by choppers and placed in valleys since their weight is less.

I want a layered defence on chinese borders as well.

Well, the armed forces were in dire need of new equipment for long. Consider the fact that the last artillery guns were bought in 1980s. This is just a much needed step to keep the Armed Forces ready for war. I don't think war is imminent.

Yeah. And preparation is always better than cure. Imagine when our army chief said that we have ammunitions only to last 2 days and pakistan would have attacked the next day? It would have been a disaster.

What signs S400 will get delivered in 2020/21 same with MRSAM which will come even further in 2023 so there is nothing ready in the next two years to even think of going into a war with pakistan or preparing for retaliation on paki invasion .. As usual deals signed now will see the daylight when we don t know they will be making any significance .. Still something is better than nothing the future will have some Advanced missile defence systems for this country .

IAF's MR-SAM order of 18 fire units will come sooner, MR-SAM order of 40 fire units for IA will come in 20/21. In the mean time Akash is being deployed in heavy numbers, secretly phase-1 BMD should have already been deployed in New Delhi, Mumbai and other key cities slowly.

s-400 will arrive around 2019, Russia can deliver a full regimental complect of 4 battalions with 4 fire units each in a year, the 5 full regimental complects on order should be in place by 2023/24. Perhaps another 7 regiments are ordered under MII, they would be of s-500 type but that is still some time away or could be that ER-SAM with Israel takes off.

Yup. Swati, made by DRDO already handed over to IA. They are testing it and is giving good results. Soon, we will have it across the border and India can use minimal artillery shells to cause maximum damage to the enemy.

If this works well, India can make pakistani artillery useless and porkis will have to abandon them altogether.

Are these Iron dome type AAMs ... Iron dome is pretty effective in tracking and targeting artillery shells and Rpg's. I hope this is similar to something like this.

India test fires surface-to-air missile 'Spyder'
Thu, 11 May 2017-10:49pm , PTI

India test fired 'Spyder' surface-to-air missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a series of tests of the short-range quick reaction missile.

The trial was carried out for validating various parameters of the sophisticated weapon system to further strengthen its air defence system, official sources here said.

'Spyder', an acquired missile system from Israel, is a short-range, quick reaction surface-to-air missile designed to strike an enemy air target within a very short time, they said.

The state-of-the-art missile has a strike range of about 15 km in low altitude. However, it is shorter than India's indigenously developed surface-to-air 'Akash' missile, which has a 25 km strike range.

The weapon was test fired from a mobile launcher at launch complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur and targeted a pilot-less target aircraft, the sources said.

Since when do Pakistani Defence really believe what Indian chief says on Media? Would they take that chance and be perhaps taken down by Su-30 MKI dominating the air? Would you take that chance?
