We will get 5 batteries for $4.5 billion whereas the Chinese who had negotiated a deal just a couple of months before us are getting 6 batteries for $3 billion.

Any insights as to why such a significant price variation?

Grow up kid most modern Israel Iron dome can't stop all third grade Hama's rockets our ballistic and cruise missiles are far far more advanced so you would be shocked what we do during war.

You can't compare the working princple of Iron Dome with S400. The similiarities of both system ends in being air defence system. Iron Dome is made to counter the short range rockets and shells. Now to do this they does use Tamir missile which does have an electro optical sensor to detect target. In simple language it does scan for any change in light while flying toward the target. The ground based radar used by the system does calculate the approximate flight path of the projectile and it depends on its optical sensor to detect a fast moving projectile and once it is detected corrects its flight path to intercept it. In itself the seeker is bit primitive in working principle but a great way to intercept a small fast moving target like Rocket or a artillery Shell.

But S400 is a extremely long range to medium range Air defence system. It is made to target larger targets like BM, CM and primarily Aircrafts. Now the working principle of the Missiles used by the system is that they does use Active Radar Homing to pinpoint the target. The ground based radar of the system detects the target at extreme range and the missiles does use active homing in flight to detect the target. In short it does see its target at a long distance unlike the Electro-Optical seeker of Iron Dome which does it at a short range. So S400 is more efficient at intercepting large targets at distance unlike Iron Dome which does works for short range targets.

As such S400 is much capable system in targeting CM and fighters in its flight path and BM in its ascend.

US Displeased With Russian S-400 Air Defense Systems Going Global

The proliferation of Russian air-defense systems like S-300 and S-400 may present a serious challenge to the air forces of the US and its allies, according to the National Interest.According to the magazine, India is about to purchase five Almaz-Antey S-400 Triumf air and missile defense systems from Russia, thus becoming the second country, along with China, to obtain the weapon.
“The proliferation of weapons like the S-400 and its S-300 predecessor pose a serious challenge to US and allied air power,” Dave Majumdar, defense editor for the National Interest, writes. “Both weapons systems are highly mobile, networked and can protect vast areas.

Effectively, weapons like the S-400 and S-300 make an entire region inaccessible to conventional non-stealthy combat aircraft.”
This “problem” is “going to get worse over time” as countries such as Iran will obtain similar weapon systems, Majumdar claims, adding that the Islamic republic has already begun to receive “a version of the S-300.”

“A complete game changer for all fourth-gen aircraft [like the F-15, F-16 and F/A-18]. That thing is a beast and you don’t want to get near it,” a senior US Marine Corps aviator told Majumdar regarding S-300, adding that this weapon series is a serious threat to every aircraft except for the most advanced stealth fighters and bombers.
“Only the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35 and Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bomber would be able to operate inside areas protected by those weapons. But even those aircraft could be challenged if there were enough S-300 or S-400 batteries operating as part of an integrated air defense network,” the author concludes.

The S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) is Russia’s next-generation air defense system, carrying three different types of missiles capable of destroying aerial targets at short-to-extremely long range.

How is it good against their tactical missile Raad in comparison with Barak 8,another future induction for all three forces ?

Raad which is a copy of Torgos ALCM and Taurus KEPD can be intercepted by Indian AAD ( endo atmorpheric interceptor) , S-400 and Barak-8 . Raad travels at Mach 0.88 and has some maneuvering capabilities which makes it extremely vulnerable to India's future IADS .S-400 can even intercept the aircraft which will be primed to deliver Raad at 350 kms range .

It depends upon the systems you are ordering , like if India has ordered NNIIRT/Almaz-Antey 55Zh6M Nebo M radar ( With S and L band making it anti stealth) , 91N6E unjammable panoramic radar detection system with 40N6 ( 400 km range ARH) and 77N6-N1 which is an anti ICBM capable missile .These systems are optional and Moscow will probably not even sell them unless it is a country like India which Russia shares close military relationship.
S-400 has no fixed price it is a veritable smorgasbord of Radars and Missiles you order what you like and can pay for and Moscow is willing to sell plus India is buying upto 6000 missiles(can't verify) . With the capabilities it has it can even ground PAF . Looking at India's relationship with Russia India will even acquire certain technologies with it.
