Qureshi links Mumbai attacks to Samjhauta blasts: report

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was on Monday quoted as having linked the Samjhauta train blasts near Panipat in 2007 to the Mumbai terror attacks in November last.

According to Dawn newspaper, Qureshi had told reporters in Multan that the Samjhauta Express incident and the Mumbai attacks were inter-connected and that the probe could continue only if India responds to questions raised by Pakistan.

However, the newspaper gave no quotations or details about his purported remarks.

Qureshi had on Sunday sought India’s cooperation in ensuring the prosecution and conviction of Pakistani suspects arrested for involvement in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

“If India wants the prosecution and conviction of persons responsible (for the Mumbai attacks), then they must answer our questions in a serious manner,” he said, referring to queries sent by Pakistan to India last week seeking more information about the November 26 terrorist incident.

Pakistan seeks custody of Kasab-Officially

Identifying Ajmal Amir Kasab as the 'prime suspect' in the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan has formally requested India to hand over the lone gunman captured alive during the Mumbai terror strikes to facilitate 'successful' prosecution of other accused arrested in this country.

"The government of Pakistan has formally requested the Indian government to hand over the custody of Ajmal Kasab because he is the prime suspect and the rest of these suspects, they are abettors, they abetted the crime," deputy attorney general Sardar Mohammad Ghazi said.

Ghazi, who has been appointed the special public prosecutor for the trial of Pakistani suspects linked to the Mumbai terror attacks, said it would be difficult to prosecute the other accused if Kasab is not handed over to Pakistan.

"I am sure the Indian government is going to look into it, they are going to take a decision because without having the custody of Ajmal Kasab in Pakistan, I think it will be very, very difficult to prosecute the rest of the suspects," he said.

Ghazi said he hoped to work in cooperation with Indian authorities to prosecute the people arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of links to the November 26 Mumbai attacks. "I am sure better sense (will prevail) and we get the custody of Ajmal Kasab and we are able to conduct the trial successfully," he said.

India has ruled out the possibility of handing over Kasab to Pakistan. After weeks of denial, Pakistan last month acknowledged Kasab as its national.

Pakistani authorities have taken into custody six suspects, including Lashker-e-Taiba operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and its communication expert Zarar Shah, though their exact legal status and whereabouts are surrounded by confusion.

An anti-terror judge remanded one of the suspects — LeT activist Hamad Amin Sadiq — to the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency for 15 days recently.

Asked about his mandate, Ghazi said he would "be expected to conduct the trial of the Mumbai suspects and bring them to justice after...exchanging evidence (with) India and after talking to the Indian counterparts".

"Let me see what the evidence is like, we'll be expecting cooperation from the Indian side also," he said.

"It is not a case which has taken place here in Pakistan. There are chains of events in India," he said, adding that Pakistan had been informed by the Indian government that there "are lots of suspects in India also".

"We will try to see what evidence India provides to us because the evidence on both sides is very important...on the basis of the joint evidence, we are going to bring the suspects to justice."

Kasab cannot be extradited, he can be tried in India: Pak
ISLAMABAD: Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist captured during the Mumbai attacks, can be tried in India as he had committed a crime in
that country, defence minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar said
on Saturday.

India could conduct the trial of Kasab according to its own laws, Mukhtar told reporters in the eastern city of Gujrat. Kasab cannot be extradited and he can be tried in India as he had committed a crime there, he said.

The accused who had been detained in Pakistan in connection with the Mumbai attacks will be brought to trial in a Pakistani court, said Mukhtar, a senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party.

Pakistani officials have said that formal charges have been filed in connection with the Mumbai attacks against nine suspects, including Kasab. Six of the other eight suspects have been detained by Pakistani authorities while two are still at large.

A judge has remanded four of the detained suspects to the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency till March 3.

Mukhtar also said that US drones only have permission to land in Pakistan for logistical reasons. All missile attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas were being conducted by drones operating from Afghanistan, he said.

Rejecting reports that the Inter-Services Intelligence agency is backing the Taliban, Mukhtar said Pakistan's armed forces are cooperating with the civilian government.

Zardari wants China to be arbitrator for India-Pakistan disputes

BEIJING: Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari has called on China to play the arbitrator for solving disputes between different countries in Asia.
He did not specifically mention India, but it is apparent that the Pakistani president wants Beijing to help resolve Islamabad's differences with New Delhi on a range of issues.

India has sternly rejected suggestions of third party assistance in resolving bilateral issues like the Kashmir disputes. Zardari has now given a new twist to Pakistan's diplomatic game by replacing the United States with China as the possible third-party that could help resolve the India-Pakistan disputes.

The Pakistani president praised China for its many qualities and then went on to say, "China is therefore in a unique position to use these attributes to help its neighboring countries improve relations among and between themselves". He cited China's role as a major trade partner of all the 14 countries bordering it as one of its special attributes.

"China is the glue holding the continent together - not only in terms of geography but in political and economic terms," the Pakistani president said in a signed article in the state-run China Daily today. Entitled "Sino-Pakistan relations higher than Himalayas", the article showered fulsome praise on China describing it as "an anchor of stability and peace not only in Asia but the world".

At the same time, Zardari shrewdly played on Chinese fears about separatists in its Xinjiang province getting support from Islamic fundamentalists across the border in Pakistan. "We are determined not to allow the noxious fumes of this dangerous phenomenon and ideology to spread to other countries," Zardari said. He claimed that "Pakistan is fighting terrorists not only for its own sake but for the entire region."

There was no mention of the Mumbai attack, which is by far the largest case of terrorism in Asia in recent decades. But he referred to recently kidnapping of Chinese citizens in Pakistan. "Indeed terrorists have specifically targeted some of our Chinese friends who were working in Pakistan to drive a wedge between the two countries and peoples".

Zardari tried to push Pakistan's case for a larger role in China's economy by offering the use of ports in his country. "Given proper infrastructure, the Pakistani ports of Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar are nearer to the Chinese heartland than Shanghai and Hong Kong. Pakistan can also help channel energy supplies from the Gulf to China," he said.

"The Pakistan-China friendship is a comprehensive partnership. China has been instrumental in helping Pakistan develop its civil and military infrastructure," the article said and then went on to say that Beijing has helped in a wide range of construction projects from nuclear power plants to dams, roads and industrial estates. "The port of Gwadar on Pakistan's Arabian Sea coast is a testament to China's friendship with Pakistan" he said.

Relationship between China and his party, the Pakistan Peoples Party, spanned three generations from late prime ministers Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto to his son and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, he said.

26/11 calls traced to Pak serving colonel
26 Feb 2009, 0034 hrs IST, C Unnikrishnan, S Ahmed Ali & Kartikeya, TNN

MUMBAI: The VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) calls made by the 26/11 terrorists to their handlers have been traced to a serving colonel of the
Pakistani army, investigations have revealed.

Although the 11,509-page chargesheet in the 26/11 case filed by the Mumbai police on Wednesday does not spell this out explicitly, it does name the officer as Colonel R Sadatullah from the SCO.

The SCO, army sources say, stands for Special Communications Organization, a telecommunications agency of the Pakistani government which is run by officers from the army's signals corps and operates only in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the conflict-wracked Northern Areas.

During the 58-hour siege of Mumbai, a total of 284 calls, running into 995 minutes, were made by the terrorists using mobile phones from the Taj Mahal hotel, Oberoi-Trident and Nariman House to their handlers in Pakistan. They took the minutest of instructions from their handlers sitting in Pakistan. The Pak-based co-conspirators also gave their agents in Mumbai pep talks to keep them going.

The chargesheet says that the calls which were made over VoIP — a cheap way of making international calls using the net — were traced back to an IP address created with Callphonex, a VoIP service provider based in New Jersey, USA.

The payments for this were made by opening an account in the name of Kharak Singh from India. However, the payments to this account were made on two occasions by wire transfer through MoneyGram and Western Union Money Transfer by two Pakistani nationals, Javed Iqbal and Mohammed Ishtiaq.

These two, while communicating with Callphonex, used the e-mail id [email protected]. This e-mail id was accessed from at least 10 IP addresses, says the chargesheet. One of them, 118.107.140.138, belongs to Col R Sadatullah whose official address is SCO, Qasim Rd, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Sadatullah's official e-mail id is [email protected], which police say is the official e-mail service for all SCO officers.

One of the wanted accused is `Major General sahab' whose name crops up repeatedly in the taped conversation between the terrorists and their handlers. Incidentally, the general manager of SCO happens to be Major General Muhammad Khalid Rao, who joined the Signals Corps in 1979.

Asked about the involvement of the Pakistani army, joint commissioner (crime) Rakesh Maria said, ``We are looking into the involvement of two army personnel, who could be supposedly serving or retired.''

The chargesheet is against 38 persons, 35 of them yet to be apprehended. The three who are in police custody include the lone Pakistani terror operative caught alive, Ajmal Amir Kasab, and two Indians, Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ansari.

The 35 wanted accused include high-profile Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives. Kasab was not brought to court because of security concerns. Described as an LeT operative responsible for the conspiracy and the attack on Mumbai, he was charged under nine different laws, including waging war on the government of India under the Indian Penal Code. The other charges are under the Foreigners' Act, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Railways Protection Act, the Explosives Act, the Explosive Substances Act, the Arms Act, the Bombay Police Act and the Customs Act.

Highlights
* The origin of the detonators used in explosives and the AK-47s is still not known
* M V Kuber, in which they entered Mumbai, was not hijacked
* There was no direct local support provided to the 10 terrorists
* After the terrorists landed at Badhwar Park, two took a dinghy to the shore near Oberoi
* There were no phone calls made by the terrorists to any government agency or police for negotiation
* The terrorists made a call to the Israeli embassy from Nariman House but made no demands
* The whereabouts of Al-Husseini in which the terrorists set out from Pakistan are not known

After NSA, SPP sacked by Pak Govt for remarks on Kasab

After National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani, it was the turn of the Special Public Prosecutor in the Mumbai attacks case to be sacked by the Pakistan government for making controversial remarks on the lone captured terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

Sardar Mohammad Ghazi was fired by President Asif Ali Zardari who also removed him from the post of Deputy Attorney General, according to an official notification quoted by Dawn News channel. His removal came more than a week after the senior lawyer sparked a controversy claiming that Islamabad had formally requested India to hand over Kasab and that he was a prime suspect in 26/11.

Ghazi's comments on February 18 were denied hours later by the Foreign Office, which said no formal request had been made to India for Kasab's custody marking yet another flip-flop by Pakistan in connection with Mumbai strikes. He later went to London on a private visit.

He had said that Kasab was the "prime suspect" and it would be difficult to prosecute the other accused arrested in Pakistan if he was not handed over by India.

Durrani, a retired major general, was sacked on January seven by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for having jumped the gun and publicly admitting that Kasab is a Pakistani national. He was handpicked for the key Security post by Zardari last year.

Pak navy chief retracts statement on Kasab
28 Feb 2009, 1514 hrs IST, PTI

KARACHI: Adding to flip-flops over the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan's navy chief on Saturday retracted his statement that Ajmal Amir Kasab did not
take the sea route and said he backed interior ministry's report that nine terrorists had sailed from Karachi to launch the strikes.

Admiral Noman Bashir, who had on Saturday contended that the navy had no evidence to prove that Kasab took the sea route, said he was not contradicting interior ministry's report on the Mumbai attacks.

"We have not been directly involved in the investigation, which is under the domain of the interior ministry. Therefore they are better equipped, they have better knowledge and information," he said.

Interior ministry chief Rehman Malik had admitted on Feb 12, when Pakistan gave its response to Indian dossier, that the Mumbai attacks were "partly" plotted on Pakistan soil and launched from its shores for which it has arrested six persons. Malik had said nine terrorists had travelled in three boats from Karachi to Mumbai.

"We have no contradictory opinion on the report prepared by them. Whatever evidence they have is correct. I won't contradict it," Admiral Bashir said.

Contradictory claims

When India’s junior foreign minister accused Pakistan of speaking in ‘different voices’ over the investigation into November’s Mumbai attacks, he was not altogether wrong. Pakistan’s approach has been plagued by contradictory statements and U-turns.

These have strengthened the impression of a government divided within its own ranks and lacking the unity of either purpose or policy. In January, the then national security adviser, Gen Mahmud Ali Durrani, was removed from his post for having tacitly admitted, without clearance from the prime minister, that Ajmal Kasab, the only surviving Mumbai gunman, had Pakistani connections.

At the time, the government was roundly denying the Indian accusation of Pakistani involvement. Some weeks later, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik conceded that some part of the conspiracy had been hatched in Pakistan. He claimed the arrest of various suspects and confirmed the unearthing of evidence linking the attacks with the Lashkar-i-Taiba, the banned organisation that India believes masterminded the plot. He told reporters that investigators had traced the fishing boat used by the attackers, which was hired in Balochistan and sailed from Karachi.

But on Friday, Pakistan naval chief Noman Bashir claimed there was no evidence that Kasab had entered India from Pakistan waters, although a day later he attempted to water down his comments by saying that it was impossible to effectively police thousands of miles of coastal territory. Such contradictions lead one to question whether, at any point, a unified policy decision was formulated in terms of the country’s response to the allegations levelled by India.

Under the circumstances, it appears as though the left hand of the establishment is unaware of what the right is doing. At stake are matters of national security. Through its turbulent history, across a range of issues, Pakistan has displayed the tendency to resort immediately to the denial of a problem without launching a full investigation. It is often proved wrong later, as was the case with the Mumbai carnage.

Not only does this project an exceedingly harmful image of the state at home and abroad, it also wastes valuable time in coming to grips with the problem. Moreover, matters are not helped when various key state officials keep saying different things.

Pak's frontier region safe haven for al-Qaida: Obama

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday said the frontier regions of Pakistan were "safe havens" for the al-Qaida.

"The safe havens for al-Qaida remain in the frontier regions of Pakistan," Obama told reporters in response to a question at the White House during a joint press conference with the visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

When asked about the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Obama said he was deeply concerned. "But, let me just make a general statement," he said.

"Both Great Britain and the United States share a deep interest in ensuring that neither Afghanistan nor Pakistan are safe havens for terrorist activity. We have coordinated effectively in the past, but the truth is that the situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated," Obama said.

Referring to the ongoing comprehensive review of US policies with respect to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Obama said: "I will be making a series of announcements prior to the NATO summit that immediately follows the G-20 summit in terms of the direction that the United States would like to go."

Identity of two more Mumbai attackers traced to Pakistan

NEW DELHI: The probe into Mumbai terror attacks has led investigating agencies to ascertain the real identity of wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba militants
Abu Al Qama and Zarar Shah. Both of them are residents of Pakistan
.

Investigations have revealed that Mazhar Iqbal, a resident of Mandi tehsil of Punjab province, was code-named as Abu Al Qama by the Lashkar terror group, official sources said on Wednesday.

This finding was a result of an increased cooperation between central security agencies and the FBI. The two agencies carried out detailed interrogation of Lashkar terrorists arrested worldwide to know the identity of Abu Al Qama.

The other Lashkar terrorist identified by the security agencies was Zarar Shah whose actual name was Abdul Wajid, a resident of Sheikhpura district of Punjab province, the sources said.

About the role of the two in Mumbai terror strikes, the sources said Iqbal alias Abu Al Qama had been responsible for training the terrorists who carried out the strikes in Mumbai on November 26 lastin which lives of 183 people were lost.

Besides having other aliases like Amjad, Iqbal is wanted in other high-profile cases including Red Fort encounter, attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat and serial bombing on the eve of Diwali in 2005 in the national capital.

Iqbal is incharge of Lashkar operations in India except Jammu&Kashmir, the sources said.

Islamabad blocks bus service to PoK, cites admin issues

6 Mar 2009, 0407 hrs IST, TNN

NEW DELHI/SRINAGAR: In a clear sign of Pakistan upping the ante against India, Islamabad on Thursday blocked the movement of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service. While officially Pakistan maintained that this had been done over some administrative issues, the act is being seen as another move by a beleaguered government after the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers to absolve itself of all responsibilities.

The development follows repeated assertions by Pakistani ministers and leaders, including interior minister Rehman Malik, that the attacks were carried out by "foreign hand" with some even naming India. So much so that the recalcitrant Pakistan has now come under fire from its own media for trying to lay the blame elsewhere when, in fact, the government needed to do some introspection.

"The flurry of charges from the media and members of the government that our neighbours to the east may have had a hand make no sense at all -- given that the gunmen have not been apprehended and no other evidence points in this particular direction," The News said in an editorial.

"Indeed, the interior ministry adviser's media talk in Islamabad seemed to add to the suspicions that no one at all with an iota of good sense is in charge of the country," the editorial added referring to Malik's remark about the foreign hand.

Pakistan has subjected itself to abject ridicule even in the international media for blaming India but going by its decision to stall the bus service, even if temporarily, it remains undeterred.

"We were prepared for the service and had issued permits to 14 Indian citizens to travel to PoK. Sixteen Pakistanis visiting Jammu & Kashmir were also planning to return," regional passport officer B S Manavalan said in Srinagar. He said the next `Karwan-e-Aman' bus service should ply as per schedule next week.

New Delhi said in the evening that the Pakistanis had cited administrative reasons to block the movement of the bus. "The Islamabad-Muzaffarabad bus was unable to cross the Line of Control (LoC) today as intimation was received from the other side that on account of certain administrative issues, the bus could not be allowed to cross over. We are ascertaining further details and are fixing up an alternative date and time so that the inconvenience to the passengers is reduced to the extent possible," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Pakistan gives Interpol its report on Mumbai attacks

PARIS: Pakistan has given Interpol a copy of its report into the Mumbai attacks to check against the global police liaison agency's database,

Interpol said on Friday.

The "investigative report" was passed onto the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency after a meeting in Islamabad between Interpol chief Ronald Noble and Pakistani officials.

Checking the report against Interpol's database could determine "what links may exist beyond India and Pakistan" in connection with the November 26-29 siege that left 165 dead and which New Delhi blames on Pakistani extremists.

"Pakistan understands that unless terrorist-related information is compared against Interpol's global databases and shared among its global network, an international terrorist investigation can never be considered complete and all countries which are not provided with this vital information remain at risk," Noble said in the statement.

Interpol added that it has also offered Pakistan "advanced technology" that would held secure Pakistan's borders by identifying anyone trying to enter the country fraudlently.

Pak lacks will to fight terror: Pranab

NEW DELHI: Foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee came down heavily on Pakistan on Friday saying that its government's "lack of will or capability"
was proving to be a major hindrance in the process of change. The minister cited the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore as an example, describing it as most disturbing for any right-minded person.

Mukherjee also emphasised the need for the international community to ensure that terrorism was eliminated on an urgent basis. Otherwise, he said, no part of the world would remain immune to the flames being ignited there. "As this week's reprehensible attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore shows, government's lack of will or capability in tackling this menace becomes a major hindrance in the smooth process of change. These developments are most disturbing for every right thinking person in the world and, without doubt, for us Indians," Mukherjee said at a function here.

Hitting out at Pakistan again for not doing enough to fight terror, Mukherjee said nations which have used terror as an instrument of state policy should be left with no choice but to dismantle their infrastructure of terrorism and "actively cooperate with the international community to eliminate this scourge".

"Of the many challenges of change today, which the governments have to manage, one of the most important is terrorism. The world at large is slowly but surely moving in the direction of reaching the threshold of zero tolerance of terrorism," Mukherjee said.

Later, talking to reporters, Mukherjee again said that India would reply to Pakistan's list of 30 questions on Mumbai attacks very soon. Pakistan has said that India needs to reply before the custody deadline of March 12 to ensure that those arrested are not let off. Sources said the Mumbai police have sent their reply to the questionnaire to the Union home ministry.

"It stands to reason that the government's ability to manage and facilitate change in the interest of its people is possible only when the government itself is responsive to its citizens' aspirations. The manipulation of popular opinion through spin or by the undermining of institutions crucial for democratic functioning can only result in short-term gains and long-term failures," Mukherjee further said during his speech.

Film piracy funding terror

MUMBAI: The leading US thinktank, Rand Corporation, has confirmed what Indian intelligence agencies have been maintaining all along— Dawood

Ibrahim has graduated to terrorism and is siphoning off millions of dollars earned from film piracy, drug-running and other crimes to finance his operations.

According to sources in the film industry and police, the moment a film is released in Mumbai, the 'D-Company' makes camera prints and sends them to Karachi or Kuala Lumpur where millions of DVDs are made and marketed across the world. But after the Mumbai-based Valuable Group introduced satellite transmission of films directly to cinema halls, it has become difficult for the gang to make camera prints as each cinema hall has a secret identity number encrypted into the movie. To avoid this, gang members have established links with small-time theatres in Gujarat where the camera prints are taken at the first show of any new film.

The gang also receives advance prints of the films financed by it through front companies. "Contrary to general impression, the D-Company is still active in Bollywood," a film producer says.

"Dawood is India's godfather of godfathers who runs criminal gangs from Bangkok to Dubai. His gang syndicate, called D-Company, engages in strong-arm protection, drug trafficking, extortion and murder-for-hire," the Rand report says.

It says that film piracy can be more paying than drug-trafficking. The report says a pirated DVD made in Malaysia for 70 cents is marked up more than 1,000% and sold in London for about $9. "The profit margin is more than three times higher than the mark-up for Iranian heroin and higher than the profit from Columbian cocaine," the report says.

Identifying Al-Mansoor and Sadaf brands belonging to Dawood, the report says he has acquired extraordinary market power in the distribution of pirated films throughout the region. The report says the D-Company has got control of Sadaf Trading Company based in Karachi, and thus allowing it to manage distribution network in Pakistan and also acquiring the infrastructure to manufacture pirate VHS tapes and VCDs for sale.

Kasab appears in court via video conferencing

Kasab appears in court via video conferencing

Published on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 21:10

Mumbai: Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive during the November 2008 Mumbai terror attack, appeared via video conferencing on Monday before Metropolitan Magistrate NN Shrimangale.

Kasab asked for an Urdu translation of the chargesheet filed by Mumbai police in the attack case but the request was denied.

The Mumbai attacker has been confined in a highly secure and secluded cell inside the Arthur Road Jail and on Monday, unlike previous times, the magistrate did not go upto his cell. Instead Kasab deposed before the metropolitan magistrate through video conferencing.

Although media was not permitted inside the video conferencing room, they were allowed to hear Kasab speak.

He was heard in a conversation which lasted only for half a minute and his voice was indication enough of acceptance of his fate and preparedness to face the trial ahead.

The magistrate began by asking Kasab his name and the latter replied - Mohammad Ajmal Kasab.

He was then asked if he had received a copy of the chargesheet to which Kasab replied in the affirmative but added that he did not understand it as it was not in a language he was conversant with.

The magistrate then explained to Kasab that under the law it was not a requirement to provide the chargesheet in the language of the accused.

Kasab was also informed that the next hearing of the case would be on March 23 in the sessions court.

"Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin (two others who have been accused of providing logistical help to the Mumbai attackers) have engaged advocates. Both the advocates are from Maharashtra and know the language in which the court proceedings take place. So if they want they can help him in understanding the chargesheet," said Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.

The magistrate also committed the case to the special sessions court being set up within the Arthur Road Jail.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist caught in connection with the terror strikes, for the first time on Monday interacted through video conferencing with magistrate NN Shrimangale from the jail premises.

"I am committing the case to sessions for trial," the magistrate said.

During the video conferencing, Kasab told the magistrate that he did not understand the chargesheet filed in English and Marathi.

The magistrate told the accused that he could make his plea before the special court.

Explain steps taken since 26/11: Bombay HC

13 Mar 2009, 0159 hrs IST, AGENCIES

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday asked the Maharashtra government about the preventive steps taken in the aftermath of audacious
November 26 Mumbai strikes.

"Has the state-appointed committee (state security council) met even once?" division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud queried.

The HC was dealing with PILs, filed by Indian Society of Law Firms and others regarding the attack. The court also asked whether any departmental action was initiated against those who were found to be negligent in their duties which failed to prevent the terrorist attacks.

However, public prosecutor Satish Borulkar asked the court for some time, after which the court adjourned the hearing till Friday.

India's reply to Pak's 30 queries ready

India's reply to Pak's 30 queries ready

Home Minister P Chidambaram is slated to hand over India's reply to Pakistan's 30 queries on the November 26. 2008 Mumbai terror attacks today (March 13) to the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The duo are slated to meet at the nation's capital at 4pm today.

However, there is no confirmation on when India will hand over their reply to Islamabad. Though sources in the External Ministry are saying that the process will be conducted soon.

The Home Ministry received replies from everyone who has been involved in the Mumbai investigations all over the country. They then framed this dossier, which will now be given to Pranab Mukherjee.

However, the process of how India will hand over their reply to Pakistan has not been confirmed yet. Whether India will summon the Pakistan High Commissioner to India or will hand over the document to India's High Commissioner in Islamabad will be left to see.

Following this hand over of reply, sources said, India will expect Pakistan to take the investigations a step forward and prosecute those who are in the custody, or apprehend more people who have been involved in the carnage.

Earlier, Pakistani investigators had informed the government that they may have to stop their probe into the Mumbai attacks due to lack of cooperation by authorities in India and several other countries.

India acts, answers Pak questions on 26/11

India acts, answers Pak questions on 26/11

New Delhi: The Indian government is ready with answers to the 30 questions Pakistan had asked about the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last November.

The Home Ministry has prepared a document which includes the DNA reports of Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist caught alive, and the nine other gunmen killed in the attack.

The document was given to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday. “We expect Pakistan to prosecute and punish the accused. It is a comprehensive document supported by documentary evidence,” said Home Minister P Chidambaram after the report was given to the foreign ministry.

Media reports say Pakistan had asked a range of questions, ranging from what Kasab said in his confession before a Mumbai court and how did the terrorists manage to reach Mumbai in a boat ditching Indian Navy.

Interpol, Pakistan share terror suspect profiles

* Interpol says information will allow it to help Pakistan determine ‘the full international dimension’ of Mumbai attacks

Monday, March 23, 2009

PARIS: Pakistan has shared the DNA profiles of suspected terrorists linked to last year’s attacks in Mumbai with Interpol, the policy agency said on Sunday, terming it a ‘benchmark’.

Interpol, which has 187 member countries, said the information would allow it to help Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to determine “the full international dimension” of the attacks. “Pakistan’s decision to send its DNA terrorist-related profiles to Interpol so that all member countries can compare their DNA profiles against them sets a benchmark for Interpol in terrorist-related investigations,” Interpol Secretary General Ronald K Noble said in a statement.

Interpol said in December that India had not shared information with it about the attacks, which killed 179 people. Pakistan, under pressure over Indian accusations that the 10 gunmen who attacked Mumbai came from Pakistan, had also complained that India had yet to provide it with any evidence to push its investigation forward.

Islamabad said last month that some leads pointed to Europe and the US. It has, however, announced criminal proceedings against eight suspects over the attacks. agencies
