since I am finding this comment again and again w.r.t India in the past, I think I should address it here.India did a lousy job generally, of publicising all this grotesque interference in India's internal issue. Chechens in Kashmir..? Simply astounding. And we hear more about the terror threat to the US from Iran, with not a single solitary Iranian ever having done a terror attack on American soil. Meanwhile, for 5 years(or more) India had to deal with nationals of 18 different countries infiltrating into its borders, to kill Indians.
Don't forget the Khalis and LTTE were still pretty strong, communal tensions were high after RJB, and no one wanted to do biz in India, with the little biz remaining being dominated by a few men. A miracle that we defeated all that, and became were we are today.since I am finding this comment again and again w.r.t India in the past, I think I should address it here.
India we know today and India in 90’s a lot different. US had a major victory over USSR in Afghanistan and was sole super power after 40 years of Cold War , USSR recently fell. Pakistan was an ally of USA. We were alone at world stage, without USSR.
And internally the country was bankrupt, local politics were more violent than they are now. Rajiv Gandhi had just died, Narashimha Rao was not being fully supported within congress.
And let’s not forget, after Narasimha Rao there were a series of short term unstable coalition governments.
And the most important reason, it was a new kind of warfare which our security establishment has not fought before.
Back when Afghan rebels were "Heroes" in American eyes. The article talks about an ambush in which10 BSF soldiers were killed and some were captured. BSF of those years had .303 rifles and the Indian Amy had mostly British SLRs and AK47s which they had mostly gotten from slain militants. I think the effect of Afghan Mujahideens is overrated as it serves Cold War propaganda. Remember the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989 and the Najibullah government survived till 1993, for four years after the Soviet withdrawal. I did read experts, with their usual "dhoti-shivering" pissing in their pants at the imagined influx of Afghan Mujahideens and its eventual consequences against India and the Indian security forces. They were perhaps nuisance at first and later Indian Army developed strategies to outsmart them. As a friend here stated, Indian Army split the Mujahideens in several small group, chased them and killed them. By 2000, many had already fled back. And hundreds of Afghani terrorists.

Do you know about any book or more articles on Kashmir in 90's. Would love to read more about these Afghans and Chechens in Kashmir.Back when Afghan rebels were "Heroes" in American eyes. Not any that I am aware of. My information is mostly gleaned from the newspapers and magazines. I do know a retired army officer in my neighborhood who served in Kashmir in the 1990s. Let me see, if he can recommend some good books or stories that he can share.Do you know about any book or more articles on Kashmir in 90's. Would love to read more about these Afghans and Chechens in Kashmir.
They developed a nuke imho a farce. Someone may have given small nuck to detonate that's all.True words. It is a nuclear power state west or Chinese have an interest to balance it vis a vis india
Ikhwans also played a role.In the early 90s, we had many casualties in the begining.
The reason was:
1. Lack of previous experience in dealing with this kind of situation.
2. Lack of proper weapons. We had bulky SLRs which were difficult to manuver, and unreliable Sten guns. SLR 1C had too much recoil. Delay in Insas induction.
3. Lack of sufficient number of AKs.
4. Many times, CASO involved full battalions, thus heavy troop concentration, which was targeted by Terrorists hiding from Kashmiri houses
5. First BSF was tasked in dealing with this kind of insurgency, which caused many casualties.
Slowly the tide turned after the initial years because:
1. Raising and induction of Rashtriya Rifles
2. Emergency import of Large number of AKs from Eastern European origin
3. Intelligence based operations.
4. Developemnet of network of ground level intelligence, local spies.
5. Improved ELINT.
6. Deep uncover operations by Para SFs, sometimes mingling with the terrorist organization after crossing the border dressed as recruits to POK.
7. Developement of training facilities in existing Corp schools having kill houses which architechturally similar to Kashmiri houses.
8. Understanding the modus operandi of terrorists after crossing LOC and their assault tactics and developing suitable SOPs to counter those .
9. Most importantly, building the fence.
It would be folly if China deploys fighters now.. It would reveal its cards too early, as it would mean any attack on Pakistan/Pok, would be defended by PLAAF. Yes, Skardu may have been pawned off to China. But, deploying this early in the game is folly for China. Because, once China deploys in Skardu, it would no longer be about India "planning about a prospective two front scenario".. India, would hit the ground running, to build capability to fight this new "reality" with all its might, and this would increase the costs for both China and Pakistan when war breaks out.. Because, the usual detractors like Coupta who say that Indian diplomacy should befriend Pakistan, to avoid a two front situation will no longer be able to do so, with PLA deployed in Pok, the time for such romance would have passed.Which kind of plaaf fighter planes will be placed in this airfield?
Skardu is about 100 km from loc
