Arty and mortar strikes on Paki positions on the LOC for every soldier of ours who's martyred within Kashmir. Improve our already advantageous arty and other firepower vis a vis the pakis and impose casualties, especially targeting officers on the other side. Secondly it also imposes a financial cost on them that they have to keep re-building destroyed bunkers and expend ammo.
The anger is understood.
It has become a see saw sequence of events. Some times the Pakistanis surprise us and sometimes we surprise them. Everybody would have noticed that the provocations from the Pak Army and ISI simply do not cease. There are some periods of peace and then again terrorist acts occur.
Though the long term trend of continuing provocations is evident, a few things need to be noted. Barely a decade or two ago the scores as regards military casualties was roughly equal on both sides. The Pakistani Army/ISI combine believed that India will always pull her punches and not escalate beyond a point. Probably a false sense of bravado dominated the Pak Generals mindset. Believing that Pakistan's nuclear weapons will act as an talisman protecting Pakistan from India's rage.
An important factor was the perceived support of the Americans for the Pakistan Army and its agenda.
But a change has occurred in the relationship between India and Pakistan. The biggest change has been that India is no longer pulling its punches. From a position of strategic equality to India, Pakistan is now an underdog. Previously casualties amongst the regular Pakistan Army service men were minimal. They lost a lot of men from the Paramilitary Wing of the state. Like Rangers, Frontier Constabulary etc. But the Army remained a holy cow.
But since at least a decade the Generals in Rawalpindi are seeing increasing numbers of regular Pak Army troops getting killed. If Indian Army soldiers are dying then so are Pak Army soldiers and officers. And they are dying in larger numbers. They are dying at the hands of our Army and Pak insurgent outfits like the TTP, Baloch Freedom fighters etc I would not be surprised if the Pakistanis are losing even 3 to 4 service men for every Indian service casualty. Even their elite SSG is bleeding.
Their Generals and politicians are having to adjust to a new reality. Their supposedly superior meat eating(a lot of Indians too eat meat, not an crime ) Muslim Army is suffering much more than the Vegetarian (again stereotyping Hindus) Hindu Indian Army. We would have seen many instances of the Pakistan Government desperately appealing to other countries to help stop Indian aggressive actions. They now whine in desperation. They now call us Nazis and fascist. Seeking to take the moral high ground.
The current situation reflects the changing balance of conventional power between Islamabad and New Delhi. India is pulling ahead of Pakistan in almost all areas. The present asymmetry between India's economic, military and nuclear power and Pakistan's capabilities will only increase with time. Chinese assistance will not be able to change the long term trend.
Having said all this, the question to be answered is - why is Pakistan still continuing with its anti India terrorism and other subversive activities.
Because the pain level of the Pakistan Army is quite high. They don't mind sustaining the current losses and have an mistaken belief that they will win in the end. In other words the costs are still not high enough for Islamabad to change direction on an permanent basis.
One way of increasing the costs for the Pakistan Army is to annex Pakistan controlled territory as an response to every major terrorist attack instigated by Islamabad. Grab hundreds of square kilometres of POK territory regularly and push towards Muzaffarabad. The more they provoke us, the more territory they should lose.
There will be a cost and a counter reaction but I believe that we can manage the situation to our benefit.
