Another episode on decline of Pakistan. In my previous posts I talked about declining infrastructure of Pakistan but here I will discuss decline of something more important.

I was listening to Tarek Fatah where he said about decline of literacy in Pakistan. This inspired me to write a few words on reading culture of Pakistan.

Pakistan for years had a decline in literacy rate over the years. Which is stagnant presently at just 60 percent.

Economic survey says literacy rate higher in urban areas (74pc) than rural areas (52pc).

However what is worst is there is decline in importance of books in the mindset of Pakistanis. This problem maybe attributed to low literacy level but it is also an institutional level problem. The situation of libraries in Pakistan is horrible. There are 182 public libraries in Pakistan total. Most of which are in terrible shape. Things are so bad that even major libraries in major cities of Pakistan are in worst possible condition

Liaquat National Library the largest library in Karachi City which contains some of the most valuable manuscripts which was built in an iconic british building Frere Hall is now rotting in dust. The worst part is, people of Pakistan who come here don't come for reading purpose but to see building and to take wedding pictures. The actual books are collecting dust.

The problem is widespread. Even the affluent class in Pakistan prefer to decorate their house with colorful books neatly decorated in shelves like showpieces and not for its actual purpose, Reading.

The biggest culprit of this problem can be education system of Pakistan but that is a different topic for another day.
