And guess what flying high negated their usefulness in close air support.

Flying high did effect their strike capability but not by much. Soviet adopted counter measures to nullify stingers. For a fact only Mi17 Helicopters were targeted by stinger with some success and these same were useless against Mi24 helicopters. Stingers only had 20% effectiveness. Soviet helicopter/aircraft loses in Afghanistan were less than 500, from all causes. Majority of them happened even before the stingers came on scene.

Russia lost circa 333 heptors in Afghanistan bulk was mi 8, the Mi 24 was nicknamed devil chariots by Afghans. The introduction of stingers was mitigated with the installation of heat dissipators, flares. However, it was the chinese supplied HMG that caused the most losses to Mi 24.
