India, Pak to hold talks on water-related issues

Rezaul H Laskar
Islamabad, May 22 (PTI) India and Pakistan will hold talks on water-related issues later this month against the backdrop of Islamabad's allegations that New Delhi is diverting river waters in violation of a bilateral treaty.

A delegation headed by Pakistan's Indus Waters Commissioner Jamaat Ali Shah will leave for New Delhi on May 30 for a five-day visit, sources in the Foreign Office told PTI.

The delegation will hold talks with a team headed by India's Indus Waters Commissioner G Ranganathan.

Though India suspended the composite dialogue process with Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, the Indus Waters Commissioners have continued meetings and interactions.

They had met days after the Mumbai incident, when a group of officials led by Ranganathan inspected water works in Punjab province in connection with Pakistan's complaints about the diversion of waters of the Chenab river.

During the upcoming meeting, Pakistan is expected to raise the issue of alleged diversion of Chenab waters to the Baglihar dam by India in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty and demand compensation for losses suffered by it. PTI

I guess building these dams in Kashmir is the smartest thing India has done in decades with respect to Pakistan.

They hold the tap of terror, we hold the tap of their water. The more they open their tap, the more we tighten our tap.

Let them decide what is more important for them, sending the terrorists to die at IA's hands like dogs and rats or water for their millions. Choice is theirs to make.

If the water is originating from India why even honor this treaty anymore?

Well, even Bramputra originates in Tibet. There are rights of the upper riparian states and there are rights of the lower riparians.

I do think India conceded more than required to Pakistan in the Sindhu water treaty. They should have got no more than 2 river water considering that all other resources were divided in the ratio of 1:3.

Imagine the kind of trouble they'll be in if we cut it out completely. We can do that in extreme situations. The economic loss to Pak will be catastrophic.

But that wold hurt civilians more than terrorists. The terrorists will just sieze all the water remaining.
