India observes anti-terrorism day on Rajiv's anniversary

Thursday, May 21, 2009,9:43 [IST]

New Delhi, May 21: The Anti-terrorism day is being observed throughout the country on Thursday, May 21. It was on this day in 1991 that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi fell to the designs of terrorists.

The day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism, violence and its dangerous effect on the people, the society and the country as a whole.

The objective behind the observance of the day is to wean away the youth from the terrorist or violence cult by highlighting the suffering of the common people and showing how it is prejudicial to the national interest.

This can be achieved by organizing debates or discussions in schools, colleges and universities; holding of symposium or seminars, lectures on the dangers of terrorism and violence and a determined and sustained drive to bring about a mass awakening against terrorism and violence.

Mass education programmes are held to highlight the ill effects of violence and terrorism. Anti-terrorism or anti-violence pledge will be taken in all government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions.

Umm.. so who's observing it exactly?

Instead of making up stupid "days" it would be better if Congress actually did something about terrorists.

As a comedian said recently, why not rename terrorists nancy boys? The designation terrorist empowers them and makes the public fear them, who would fear a bunch of nancy boys?
What homegrown kid would let themselves get involved in a nancy boy movement anyway?

Of course a few communities may have a bit of an issue with this but they could be overruled.

Anti-terrorism day should not be just about a lot of sad words, but also about action. Our jawans are risking their lives everyday while those who came up with this day sit in A/c offices in safety.

To make this day more than a farce, we need to do more to eradicate terrorism in india. Firstly, properly fence and mine our borders so that terrorists wont waltz across it. Then provide good body armour and better weapons to the average infantry man so he is better equipped to kill and not be killed by the terrorists he is fighting. Lastly, sharpen up our intelligence services to better detect and counter terrorism.

Our open borders are a glaring weakness in our defense. No matter how many anti-missile systems we make, it will all be for nothing if terrorists smuggle a nuke across the border.

Show the people of India that the govt is actually doing something. Shore up anti-terrorist defences alongside purchase of aircraft and ships
