NEW DELHI: According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) global air pollution database released in Geneva, India has 14 out of the 15 most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM 2.5 concentrations -- the worst being Kanpur with a PM 2.5 concentration of 173 micrograms per cubic metre, followed by Faridabad, Varanasi and Gaya.

Other Indian cities that registered very high levels of PM2.5 pollutants are Delhi, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala and Jodhpur, followed by Ali Subah Al-Salem in Kuwait and a few cities in China and Mongolia.

India’s financial capital Mumbai is the world’s fourth most polluted megacity. The study considered PM2.5 (particulate matter of diameter less than 2.5 micrometres) and PM10. PM2.5 is more dangerous than PM10. The period considered for the study was 2010 to 2016.

development has its price, but a good chunk of Delhis pollution is because of the neighboring districts burning fields after harvesting it. goverment should provide a good alternative. its near impossible to monitor or control these things

Mumbai is 4th most polluted city in world? Experts question WHO data
A day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) report ranked Mumbai as the fourth most polluted metropolitan city in the world, experts have expressed doubts over the alarming findings. The report took into account the particulate matter(PM) pollutants in the air and the rankings were based on PM 2.5 as well as PM 10 levels.

Dr Gufran Beig, Project Director of the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), which generates Air Quality Index (AQI) profile for Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad expressed that he had his reservations in accepting the conclusions of the WHO report, particularly about Indian cities and the authenticity of their data base. He added that WHO must consult Indian stakeholders before conclusions.

Further, he stated that this ranking was biased towards the specific single station data. These stations are located in the traffic junction in most cities. Experts have raised the issue that the AQI of a city is a combination of different micro-environments. Additionally, the Indian threshold limit for PM 2.5 is 40 microgram per cubic metre while the WHO’s standard was 10 microgram per cubic metre.

“Most doubtful is the result on Mumbai which SAFAR is mapping and forecasting for past 3 years. It is not as polluted as concluded by the WHO report and the reason is simple and scientific. Pollution in Mumbai cannot build up significantly due to coastal environment and often gets swept away due to cleaner oceanic winds. Most of the time, pollution levels are ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ and during the winter, a few days record ‘very poor’,” informed Dr Beig.

Meanwhile, experts have also claimed that rather than just ignoring this report, it needed to be treated it as a warning bell for Mumbai, adding that an independent expert committee needs to be appointed to not only study the present situation of air quality but also estimate the future situation. “In the next five years the construction is only going to increase with several key infrastructure projects in pipeline. A proper action plan has to be prepared for Mumbai when it comes to tackling air pollution,” said an air quality expert in the Central Government.

Any explanation of how this has happened? Are all other developing countries using electric vehicles suddenly? What exactly is India doing wrong that it features so prominently on this list? Especially considering the fact that cities in the West and far East have far more cars? And why are all the cities on the list from North India?

These are basically foot soldiers or in some case can even be called zombies.

Type 2: Consist of 15% of the liberal population. These are liberals that are provided data and info by type 1, this type does article of their own but they are half assed and nothing more than adhominem and slandering attack. These people have reputation and a public appeal so they cab convince novice people quickly.

What can their agenda be? The BJP government has firmly proven its commitment to green energy and electric vehicles. Its not like the Republican party which denies climate change. They have stood with the Paris accords. We are setting world records in solar and wind power for gods sakes. Our renewable energy production is now overtaking coal. What point can they make with such articles? All we need to do is show them how much action is already being taken. But still, having travelled to Bangkok, I must say that it is far less polluted than our cities even though it has twice the number of cars and motorcycles. Much less smoke and dust. Same with Moscow. Every road of theirs is as wide as our highways, and it is always jam packed with cars. Yet the air quality there is excellent. There is something we are doing wrong in our cities.

There is not much we can do about it this is a geographical problem and yes mostly happens in north India but there's a reason for it.

The only concerning city here is Mumbai.
Have u ever noticed there is more dust in India than foreign counties? Specially in the north. This can be attributed to large scale deforestation in the northern areas.

If u measure the pollution level in terms of Sulphur and Carbon and other pollutants in the area we would be nowhere in the list.

maybe its not because of pollution from cars ,
it could be so many factories there responsible for it .

Mumbai is simply horrible. I went there 13 years ago and even then it was so bad.....I cant imagine how bad it is now. These mega-cities with mega population problems will eventually lose their top notch talent base. People dont want to live in these type of cities...regardless of how much you pay them.
