In a time of world economic crisis, looming wars, new viruses, creeping disinformation, and dying ecosystems, the United Nations Security Council welcomes 5 new members.

Any resolution against China for its nefarious behaviour in both the Wuhan virus crisis and its aggression against India shall be blocked by Chinese veto. But if China is forced to defend itself like in a tribunal, this will be still a defeat for them, meaning that their propaganda failed to achieve its goals.

Let’s isolate China at the UNSC. Let’s shame them ! Perhaps India can use its new status to this avail. I imagine that India could draft a resolution asking China to cooperate with an international probe into the origins of the Wuhan virus and how it spread beyond control. That would be fun !

Note that among new members Ireland and Norway are not known for any special love for China.

Among the other members who should not support Chinese stance : Vietnam. Estonia (esteemed Nato member). UK, France, USA.

Firmly with China : Russia.

Tunisia may align with China for money.
Kenya ? Djibouti would have been far worse, with their Chinese base.
Mexico is not yet in the Chinese orbit.
Niger will be torn between its western protectors and chinese investments.
Saint Vincent and Grenadines ? sigh ...

Kenya has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, defeating Djibouti for a seat designated for African countries.
UN Member States chose the country in a second round of voting on Thursday in the General Assembly, with 192 ambassadors casting their ballots during pre-determined time slots, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The run-off took place one day after elections to select five new non-permanent members to serve on the Council, based on regional groupings.
Both Kenya and Djibouti had failed to secure the required two-thirds majority on Wednesday, or 128 votes.
In the second round, Kenya received 129 votes, and Djibouti 62.

Fifteen countries sit on the Security Council, the UN organ that maintains international peace and security.
Five are permanent members, who have the right to veto resolutions: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Ten non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms, with five elected each year.
Joining Kenya at the iconic horseshoe-shaped table in January are India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway. Canada lost out on Wednesday in the other contested seat, within the “Western Europe and other States” group.
They will replace Belgium, Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa.
Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam will remain in the Council through the end of 2021.

Norway should lead from the front to have better impact. Norway has a female PM, is the leader in standard of living and has a chance to prove its weight in international affairs. Besides, it can shepherd the EU into rallying against the Chinese dominance in EU affairs like accusing French and Italian old age homes of leaving the old to die of Corona virus. An EU response would also calm Trump and Pompeo and help build ties across the Atlantic...
