Nepal Endorses PTA with India; Allows GMR to Build 900MW Plant

KATHMANDU: Nepal has endorsed the Power Trade Agreement with India and signed a deal with the GMR authorising the Indian company to build the largest hydropower project worth USD 1.15 billion in the energy-starved nation. Nepal government today signed the Project Development Agreement with the GMR a day after the cabinet authorised the Investment Board of Nepal to sign the much awaited deal for the development of 900 MW Upper Karnali Project. Similarly, the cabinet yesterday also endorsed the Power Trade Agreement (PTA) signed between Nepal and India. The two countries had reached a deal on a preliminary draft of PTA on September 4. The agreement covers, power trading, cross- border transmission lines and grid connectivity between the two neighbouring countries. The agreement paves way for final agreement of PTA with the government of India. This has been a major breakthrough for harnessing abundant hydropower potential of Nepal which will pave way for cooperation between Nepal and India in hydropower sector. This is also likely to bring in a huge foreign investment in hydropower sector of Nepal. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nepal in August, the two countries had emphasised that cooperation in this sector will be beneficial to them and officials were directed to finalise the PTA as soon as possible. Nepal faces severe power shortage, with major cities remain under power cuts for up to 12 hours.

We want the chinese to build the railway to Kathmandu. I take it as a positive move. I want Chinese to connect Dhaka to South China. We want South Asia to see and understand the Chinese.

Either South Asia will take a liking to Chinese or it will be reverse. We shall see.

Only throwing money will not change the dynamics in South Asia forever.

(Bloomberg) -- India's national road-building agency may undertake projects abroad for the first time in Afghanistan and Nepal, Road Minister Nitin Gadkari said. The Afghan and Nepali governments have approached India about having the National Highways Authority of India build roads in their countries, Gadkari said in New Delhi today. India is considering the requests, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government wants to improve ties with its neighbors. Poor connectivity, cross-border conflicts and security concerns have contributed to South Asia being one the least integrated regions in the world, according to the World Bank. Gadkari said the government is considering international projects as part of a larger reform of the highway builder.

India gifts 35 vehicles to Nepal's anti-graft body

KATHMANDU:Indian authorities on Thursday gifted 35 vehicles to Nepal's anti-graft body, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). At a function held at the CIAA headquarters, India's ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae presented the vehicles worth 33 million Nepali rupees (about $331,000) to the commission. The 35 vehicles comprise five sedans, 15 double door pickups and 15 sport utility vehicles. The vehicles will enhance the logistical capacity of the CIAA, provide it greater mobility and contribute to its national objective of curbing corruption, ambassador Rae said. Underlining the importance of transparency and good governance for Nepal's overall development, Rae emphasized that society as a whole would need to join hands to eradicate corruption. India had earlier gifted 846 vehicles to various security agencies and the Election Commission of Nepal during the 2013 election in the country. A number of mini buses, motorbikes, scooters (ladies) were gifted by the Indian government. The Indian government has been gifting ambulances and buses to Nepal on the occasion of India's Independence Day and Republic Day since 1994. So far, a total of 462 ambulances and 90 buses have been given to various government and non- government organisations of Nepal.

I did not see a dedicated thread to Nepal here, so creating one. I think Nepal is a very critical and strategic neighbor that India has. With the kind of handling of relations with Nepal, India has a lot to gain or a lot to lose.

Please post your thoughts, news, updates regarding the subject here.

UN chief calls for lifting of blockade on Indo-Nepal border

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...on-Indo-Nepal-border/articleshow/49747847.cms

UNITED NATIONS: Expressing concern over the obstruction of essential supplies to Nepal, UN chief Ban Ki-moon has called on "all sides" to lift the blockade at the Indo-Nepal border immediately invoking the landlocked country's right of free transit.

"The Secretary-General indeed reiterates his concern over the obstruction of essential supplies on the Nepal-India border. Acute shortages in fuel supplies continue to impede planned deliveries to earthquake-affected villages in Nepal," Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters yesterday.

He said humanitarian organisations urgently require fuel to maintain operations and deliver food, warm clothing and shelter materials to high altitude areas that will soon be cut off by harsh winter weather.

"The Secretary-General underlines Nepal's right of free transit, as a landlocked nation as well as for humanitarian reasons, and calls on all sides to lift the obstructions without further delay," he said.

India yesterday said Nepal's "internal factors" were responsible for the blockade on the border.

The blockade began after Madhesi community -- who have cultural, linguistic and family ties to Indians living across the border -- began their protests over Nepal's Constitution.

They believe the new charter is flawed and discriminatory as it does not represent their interests.

The agitators have been picketing the Nepal-India border near Raxaul, from where 70 per cent of goods are transported to Nepal.

Madhesis, Indian-origin inhabitants of Nepal's Terai region, are protesting division of their ancestral homeland in the new Constitution. The agitation close to the main trading point near Raxaul has halted supply of essential goods, causing acute shortage of fuel in Nepal.

Over 40 people have died in the violent agitation that has also overwhelmed Indo-Nepal ties as transit of goods and fuel to the Himalayan nation from India via the major border trading points has been badly affected.

The agitation by Madhesi groups has paralysed normal life across Nepal while the dearth of medicines has put lives of patients at stake.

While watching this video, I had a feeling someone from ourside are showing high-handed ness across this border, Or atleast the Nepalis feel so.

I remember in the pre-2000's North Indians who used to come to Shirdi , Tirupati or Godavari Pushkar used to have typical behaviour as if they are foreigners and behaved with somewhat of arrogance. Obviously that changed after Indian IT boom and country became more integrated.

I wonder if the Same thing is happening here in Nepal.
