India needs to learn that economic development comes before a naval buildup : Chinese Media

"China is planning to build more aircraft carriers to bolster its maritime capabilities, which could pose a bigger threat to India," India's Economic Times reported recently. With concerns expressed by Indian media outlets about the rise of China's military strength, the two countries need to avert an arms race, especially at a time when China's first domestically built aircraft carrier is being prepared for launch in late April.

Aircraft carriers are seen as symbols of a nation's military might, but the construction of them consumes huge amounts of resources, thus requiring developing countries to learn how to keep their military ambitions in check. China had no aircraft carriers until 2012 when its first one, the Liaoning, was commissioned, adding to the evidence that China's pursuit of military development has been in synch with its overall economic expansion.

As the world's second-largest economy, China is now capable of building a strong navy to safeguard the security of strategic maritime channels. China's construction of its first aircraft carrier is a result of economic development. The country would have finished work on it several years ago if Beijing had simply wanted to engage in an arms race to have more influence in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.

India itself could be taken as a negative example for a buildup of aircraft carriers. India's first aircraft carrier was purchased from the UK in 1957, but the vessel was not adequate for modern strategic requirements, forcing India to develop its own aircraft carrier. The country unveiled its first domestically built aircraft carrier in 2015, but the Wall Street Journal said in 2016 that top US naval engineers discovered the carrier wouldn't be operational for up to a decade. New Delhi is perhaps too impatient to develop an aircraft carrier. The country is still in its initial stage of industrialization, and there will be many technical obstacles that stand in the way of a buildup of aircraft carriers.

In the past few decades, India and China have taken different paths in terms of aircraft carriers, but the different results achieved by the two countries point to the underlying importance of economic development. New Delhi should perhaps be less eager to speed up the process of building aircraft carriers in order to counter China's growing sway in the Indian Ocean, and focus more on its economy.

While it may be a case of sour grapes, I think we need to adopt a commonsense approach to military. Aircraft carriers are instrument of past wars. Today small ships armed with hypersonic missiles and even submarines with long range torpedoes will make a mincemeat of Aircraft carriers. Given the cost of an Aircraft carrier. is it even a worthwhile investment. I rather have 1500km brahmos on a small ship with carrier killing capability at cost of 800million USD than a 12 billion white elephant called aircraft carrier. We should stop useless investment in aircraft carriers and focus on more submarines with long range torpedos. Our scorpenes still lack a mordern torpedo.

What is the purpose of Liaoning ??? is it not a fully operational AC ...Or they are just using it only for training purpose ??? they are building more than 4 ACs and they are crying about we building one and giving us lecture on building economy ..We should complete IAC-1 before 2020 it should not drag for another decade like the US article quoted ..Any idea what is the budget for IAC-1 ?????

China should keep the advice for itself and we will do what is needed for security of our Nation.

They are talking as if China is the richest country in the world. Just having 2nd number GDP doesn't mean much when per capita GDP is 104th. The chinese living out side well developed urban zones are still very poor. They should focus on development before a naval buildup.

The amount of gas they keep spewing from their behinds is inversely proportional to the size of their brains. So let's not expect any logic from these turds.

They've got 90 crore people living under $10 per day. What kind of economic development is that? All their statistics are hidden behind the giant curtain of PLA. A journalist criticizing the government disappears the next day.

Who the hell are these guys to tell India what to do?

Their only butt hurt is that India doesn't listen & obey them as their other pet counterparts.

China do not consider India as a significant Asian power let alone global power and due to inherent asymmetry (Economic, Military, Political) Chinese keep on advising that India should stop obsessing with dreams of parity with China and accept a subaltern status against China. India is not a threat for China not even a competitor.

While it consider itself a great benevolent power in general and Military - Economic power in particular. By it's artificial Island fortress, intention to deploy it's Marine corps in Gwadar, gaining port access in Sri Lanka and Myanmar (access to Bay of Bengal) not to mention modern rail and road network in the North - the "strategic encirclement" is already in progress.

PLAN intends to operate 6 Aircraft carriers for such power projection and 2 strongest Navy in near future.

This is a reply to India comparing itself to China all the time.

If India dont talk about China, no chinese would mention India or Indians.

These commie filth needs to be taught a lesson they need to be nuked and turned into a radioactive wasteland

Maybe modi should pay respect to brave Japanese soldier who fought for peace and Justice in World wars.

Sorry, Chinese people have little time for Indians unless Indians start first. And only on internet.

Our rivals are the US, Japan, SoKo and Taiwan on first tier. This expands to sports as well. Maybe Vietnam on 2nd tier.

India? Maybe below Philippines in Chinese eyes.

Very, very small number of PLA, PLAN and PLAAF assets assigned to India compared to the tier one rivals. In fact, there might be NO Chinese warship or fighter aircraft that focus on India. Chinese warships in IOR are for piracy containment.

Is that why Global Times is constantly vomiting its putrid guts out all the time about "advise" to India and getting its knickers in a twist about the Dalai Lama?

An 81 year old Buddhist monk is your true rival. That's how truth and goodness defeats the lies of barbarian communist scum.

China is the biggest pirate in the Pacific, SCS, ECS and IOR. If not for China's illegal developments and piracy, everyone would get along pretty well.

Hey 'lady', does Uncle Xi pay you 50 cents for this post also?

This post seems a bit half-hearted, not a lot of effort. Seems more worth 20 cents to me.
