Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has urged India not to speed up the arms race in the region.

In an interview with a Turkish media house, Zardari, while raising concerns over the 30 percent increase in India’s defence budget following the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, said South Asian countries should focus on humanitarian issues rather than building armies and piling up devastating weapons.

“Countries in the region should focus on eradicating poverty and addressing humanitarian issues rather than building armies,” The Daily Times quoted Zardari, as saying.

Reiterating Pakistan’s jaded ‘K’ tune, he said New Delhi must start bilateral talks to resolve all outstanding issue between the two countries, including the long pending Kashmir issue.

Responding to a question, Zardari denied any threat to Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, saying they were is safe custody.

Why not. We should. If we want Pakistan to piss in their pants then we should. If we want them to think twice
before daring another 26/11 then we should.

If we want China to watch what it says or does then we should.
I would want Pakistan to race with us and in turn bleed itself.
Try to make the qualitative and quantitative difference between Indian and Pakistan
armed forces massive.

Yup, that's the kind of aim I would like the Indian armed forces and politicians to have.
Keep working towards it.

Its Pakistans India centric mindset that makes it think we are in a regional arms race (read with Pakistan). That is not the case and Zardari is better off realising that sooner. India has global ambitions and has the means to go about its business. Pakistan can only but cry at all available international foras, be it on Kashmir, Astan, or Indias rise as an economic and military power.

It is a classical case of the Pot calling the kettle black. Inspite of a full blown insurgency which threatens to split the whole country into fragments, the PA is busy procuring, Submarines and fighter jets, apart from developing their nuclear arsenal at a breakneck speed.

Well Mr. Zardari, we will not lead regional arms race but global arms race. Get ready for it.

The Pakistan will listen to India only when we arm ourselves with a bigger and better stick and that is exactly what Pakistan is afraid of. Pakistan cannot match India weapon for weapon and will lose the battle of geo-politics even before a shot is fired at them. Keep arming ourselves with China in mind, Pakistan is already taken care of.

Whats Zardari's problem if we upgrading to counter the chinese threat. It seems he knows that already india has a vast superior force than them, such upgrades and acquisitions will result in pakistan never ever able to catch up to us. He should understand that india now compares its armed forces with china and aims to level up. comparing with pakistan is history.

why dosen't he ever mention China should refrain from starting the arms race? This arms race in all of Asia was started by China but he will never mention that or no free jweapons by China will be given to Pakistan.

Can there be a race between a country that lives on aid ( a.k.a ransom using nuke card ) and a country whose economy has been in +ve even during recession.

How can India address Regional Humanitarian issues when they are doing everything to keep us out. Recent example being Afghan.

In the first, this is a diplomatic statement with two ends in mind: 1) to spotlight international attention on the arms buildup of a hostile state; 2) to fulfill the raison d'être of the Foreign Office, as it were, in self-perpetuating fashion.

But why do diplomats make such coldly unbending, utterly apocryphal statements, indicative of the technique used in both Foreign Offices and sewing circles? After all, is it not an utterly trite lie? Especially when Pakisthan has received $9 + 7.5 billion in realized and designated military aid since 2002? Especially when, in addition to the $11 billion already procured under the FMF program, Pakisthan has received nearly $3 billion from the Coalition Support Fund in the three years since 9/11- ten times the amount received by Poland, the second-highest recipient of cash from the fund? Especially when Pakistan has used the money to purchase helicopters, F-16s, aircraft-mounted armaments, and anti-ship and antimissile defense systems- weapons that have little actuated utility in the 'war against terror' against the Taliban - and the latter of which have no utility at all. Do they not realize that India has to maintain military parity with both Pakisthan and China? Particularly, when it has a great role in maritime security in the region, has a multitude of space-based assets and requires large ground-based capabilities to modernize its fleet of largely Soviet-era weapons' platforms and defend what is the third largest country on the continent? Or do they pretend to be daft?

The fact is, that the Foreign Office is often called upon by the Armed Forces to issue statements as an 'expression of concern', with little independent probability of success, but which, by virtue of concatenation and sustained reprove / lambaste, have the potential to embarrass or 'shame' the foreign military into being circumspect with the timing and nature of its announcements. For a probability game-theory approach to such conflict rhetoric, see: http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~content=a910088310&db=all

The actual bearing of such process(action) statements on foreign acquisitions or purchases is little or none. If a country wishes to circumvent unease stemming from an international focus on its arms acquisitions, it will simply reduce media exposure to such deals and conduct them on the quiet. Foreign Offices with sufficient clout would also request counterpart foreign offices of the countries in the partner-client relationship to muzzle their media agencies - and often attain it. Intelligence agencies can confound that information dysymmetry, but then the country in question is faced with the dual conundrum of either: calling it out and, in the process, risk revealing their human / electronic intelligence sources; or sit quiet and let the deal proceed, a de facto malefaction of the intelligence, and a recrudescence to square-one.

Three cheers for Mister Zardari for such intelligent comments, which world is he living in!! Our policies are not Pakistan centric, we have a "Global Approach"; unlike Pakistan which is obsessed with India and its Booming Economy and off course how can we Forget Bollywood!! Our concerns go way beyond Pakistan!:p

Soviet Union at the height of the cold war was spending close to 35% of their GDP on defence. Pakistan's real numbers will not be known since many things are gifted or comes in the form of aid.

OF late zardari seems to have become like a kid crying because big brother is older and stronger than him ; well guess what big brother is older stronger financially independent and more mature , unless Pakistan grows up and stops blaming everything from untoward stains on zaradri's underwear to the end of the world on India i see no hope for the nation . Pakistan needs to build it's own identity in the world separate from India if it ever wants to grow and be a viable nation as of now that looks along way off.

Zardari Miyan's comments are silly. India buys arms for its use and needs. It need not create any arms race in this region if the other countries are mature enough to buy arms for their use instead of thinking of it as competition with India. Anyway, why is Zardari complaining, Pakistan gets freebies while India has to buy weapons with its hard-earned money.

Ultimately, the choice lies with Pakistan whether it would want to make this an arms race or not. If it wants to make it an arms race then India has no probs. Because Pakistan will lose the race. If Pakistan due to some sudden enlightment chooses to not make this a race, people of Pakistan will benefit. Its upto Zardari or whoever is in control of Pakistan to decide whether to create a regional arms race or not.

this thread is silly.does this news piece even deserve any discussion on DFI?The thing is that zardari is being cornered by army and gilani and nawaz and parliament so to fend off domestic pressure on him he is trying to show himself as hawkish towards india(which every paki general/neta do whenever domestic pressure becomes to unbearable for them.).Mind it zardari was being criticised for being soft towards india 1.6yrs back with all his no war with india and pak cannot wrest kashmir from india and all opening of trade with india.

Agreed. This news does not deserve a separate thread, it would be better if it is merged with thread which tracks the day-to-day politics of Pakistan.

But, unfortunately for him, he is competing with some really hawkish guys. So, for him to impress his audience, he has to announce something specatacular like nukes or something. 'regional arms race' is passe... :p
