India May Launch Global Process to Ban N-Weapons

India is mulling launching a new global process to prepare the way for a legal ban on nuclear weapons, Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar has said at a meeting of a global advocacy group in Los Angeles.

Speaking at the Global Zero Summit yesterday, he made a strong pitch for start of multilateral negotiations for elimination of nuclear weapons and made suggestions based on a report he had prepared on Rajiv Gandhi's 1988 Action Plan for a Nuclear-Weapons Free and non-violent World Order.

"...In effect, India will be launching a new global process to prepare the way for a legal ban on nuclear weapons," he said referring to the report he presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in August.

The 284-page report outlines a seven-point roadmap, including India reiterating its commitment to eliminating its own arsenal as part of a universal, non-discriminatory and verifiable global process and promoting delegitimising of nuclear weapons to set the stage for "negotiating Nuclear Weapons Convention that would discuss a world without nuclear weapons in a specified time frame".

delusion pure delusion, history has shown us that the human race craves better and better ways to kill it's brethren so i do not see nukes being disbanded anytime soon. also Nukes are the only thing keeping the peace in a lot of places, the world will be a far more violent place without nuclear weapons mark my words.

This is MMS-Obama dream. Came to knew about it several months ago.

A western country passionate over its own idea of laputan world peace while other aspires to be peaceful leader of new world.

I don't know why there is persistent pattern within thinking of Indian leaders but they act so idealist naive in the beginning only to realize the inevitable practicality in dealing with peace & war. Indira, Rajiv, Vajpayee all were first overwhelmed by the idea of 'peaceful world', but not too long before they understood the difference between idealism & practicality. Now its MMS doing his time.

Best luck & best luck.

ps: Either Aiyer is spilling out the beans or the proposal is dead & aiyer just having his airy talk at summit.

We all are kind of certain this proposal is a non-started from the literal sense. Yet, it will give India enough ammo to criticise the Big 5 next time any NPT, NSG or UNSC Permanent Membership issue crops up.

I say good impetus.
