India wants the warships lent to Sri Lanka returned

12 Nov 2009 8ak: With the LTTE dead and gone, the coast guard wants the two war-ships it lent to the Lankan navy during its war against the Elam guerrillas returned.

The two warships, Coast Guard Ship (CGS) Varaha And CGS Vigraha, were given to Sri Lanka as a good will gesture, on an annual renewable contract to meet the island countries immediate requirement, while fighting the deadly LTTE. There is a view within the government that such a move may force the neighbouring country to lean towards Pakistan or China to fulfil its military requirement, something which the Indian government does not want.

Hence, the Indian government and administration finds itself in a complex situation because with a coastal line stretching 4.700 km, protecting the Indian waters is a mammoth task. What has also not helped matters is the shortage of vessels in the coast guard. It may be noted that the government is serious about modernising the force and has initiated a long-term up gradation program by sanctioning 55 new ships and 45 new aircrafts for the Coast guard apart from raising the cadre size by creation of additional 3000 posts. But the main problem is in catering to the immediate requirement of the resource-starved Indian Coast Guard.

We've repaired their ships and wrote down the costs. It wouldn't be a big problem if v were to extend a credit line to build a new ship for them.

if our coast guard need ships that urgently, lease one from the navy, build one for the navy from south korea for under a direct purchase contract. This wouldn't take a month, considering their leadership in ship building and efficiency.

Icecoolben,

I am sure that the South Koreans are one of the leading ship builders in the world but they will not be able to build a ship in one month. The only time IIRC ships were built at a furious pace were the Liberty ships during the WWII.

I didn't mean it literally, just wanted to imply the pace of ship building available at foreign yards. The situation still hasn't blown and gotten too serious to drag srilanka from us into chinese, pakistan's arms.
The capability for a quick nice fix exists and its up to us invoke this choice, of course the mod and external affairs have to work out such out of box solutions if india has to emerge a reginal champion and a global leader at large.

I completely agree with you icecoolben.

It is high time that India engages SL on all fronts, economic, military, people to people.

They are on our backyard and we cannot allow the Chinese or Pakistani's to have a presence in that country.
