India and Iran's interests don't align with each other . Whenever we diplomatically engage with israel there is always some discomfort felt in tehran . They have many times openly supported Kashmiri terrorists and their muslim clerics have issued many fatwas against indian army in kashmir . They are very close to china as well especially after the 400 Billion pact they signed last year

Our strategic interests in the middle east and the Gulf rest on the indo - Arab - israeli Triangle .

Iran is equally important. The simple reason is that without POK, they are our access to the Central Asian region. Simple. Unless you have plans to magically bring POK under us by tomorrow evening, Iran has to be an important ally.

Also remember, Iranians are not your typical muslims as people; they are sensible lot and the chances of them leaving Islam and returning back to Zoroastrianism is just one counter-revolution away as the troubles of that country increase. They may still pursue nuclear power but that's a bridge we can cross later. Personally, I wouldn't mind a friendly Zoroastrian Iran with nuclear weapons, whether they choose to be a democracy or a republican unitary state.

But Iranians take any decision by foreign countries against them as a people - not as governments. So we should continue cultivating strong ties with them in every field we can.

Keeping Iran away from the Pakistani-Chinese circle is equally important. See, Iranian regime is aloof; they don't like alliances or anything that tries to bind them into a commitment. That's very similar to our own policy.

The only difference is that while we have people like Dr. Jaishankar who are seasoned in articulating this without making a scene, their foreign policy officials are essentially military or clerical personnel with very limited diplomatic experience for the last 40+ years.

A neutral if not friendly Iran is important for us. UAE's current focus is less on Iran and more on Turkey-Azerbaijan-Libya and that is a good thing. We should use this time to calm down the Persian Gulf and try to secure out medium-term interests there.

Iran is a islamic republic governed by Sharia Law and it is porhibhited to follow any other religion publicly other than Shi'ite Islam . They aren't sensible . They persecuted parsis because of which all of them came to india . In Iran the Supreme authority is the Ayotollah who is not only a political leader but also a spiritual Leader . He is the chief muslim cleric of Iran . Ayotollah is for Iranians what Dalai Lama is for Tibetans . The only difference is that ayotollah is a radical hardliner whereas dalai Lama spreads the message of peace and enlightenment

Keeping Iran away from pakistan china triangle is impossible . A lot of their strategic and economic interests co incide . After the signing of the 400 Billion dollar pact with china iran has openly showed to india that china matters more to them than india , another example would be the chabahar rail line project . They also need the help of pakistan to promote stability in Afghanistan and eastern regions of iran which have seen many law and order breakdowns in the past .
