India will float a company to develop Iran's Chabahar Port, a government statement said on Saturday, as New Delhi aims to take advantage of a thaw in Tehran's relations with world powers.

The port of Chabahar in southeast Iran is central to India's efforts to circumvent Pakistan and open up a route to landlocked Afghanistan where it has developed close security ties and economic interests.

Iran and six world powers are engaged in talks to agree on a deal easing sanctions against Tehran before a late-November deadline. The powers want Iran to scale back its uranium enrichment programme to ensure it cannot produce nuclear bombs. Iran says the programme is for peaceful purposes.

India plans to sign an agreement with Iran for the development of the port and New Delhi intends to lease two berths at Chabahar for 10 years, the statement said.

The planned Indian company will invest $85.21 million in one year to convert the berths into a container terminal and a multi-purpose cargo terminal, the statement said, adding India would consider the participation of Iranian firms if needed.

Better to use L&T or Adani's for this job. This should not be given to a PSU. There can be guarantees from GOI to these Private companies for the work done there.

Crying kafir etc is for domestic consumption.... there are so many ways of allowing military equipment through and my reading is Iran will help India out to keep Saudi-funded Sunni Pakistan out (though all the while Tehran will be denying that).

Indian involvement in Chahabar is a real positive for India and Iran and good for connectivity to Central Asia.

Is it possible, imo NO. Iran itself will not allow for transit of miltary. Especailly when its crying/shouting that kaffirs have been stationed on other side of gulf. So if it allows kaffir that too not even super duper west but a common india, its even much a bigger NO.

Also west also will not allow such power display by a third worlder

With the political inhibitions of the previous government out of the way, India has chosen to push through with its plans to invest in the Iranian port city of Chabahar.

Afraid of clouding relations with the US, the previous administration of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would not get the investment off the ground. However, the present government headed by Premier Narendra Modi cleared the move just a few months after taking office, Press TV reported.

Iran's Chabahar Port, located 72 kilometers (44 miles) west of Pakistan's Gwadar port, holds immense strategic and economic significance for India. It is already connected to the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan's southwestern province of Nimruz and can serve as India's entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.

Trade ties between Iran and India have been witnessing a boom. According to Indian sources, the export of engineering goods and products to Iran has increased dramatically.

In July, shipments showed an increase of around 140 percent, which amounted to $177 million. Last year, the figure only stood at $52 million.

India will be benifited heavily as this port will serve as a counter-weight to China's control over Pakistan's Gwadar Port, just 75 km away from Chabahar. India's control over Chabahar will neutralise the significance of the Gwadar Port by the Chinese as China has to face Indian Ships and security establishments before reaching Gwadar from the Arabian states through Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman. India also has some partiall control on Oman's commertial and military port as India has security relations with this Gulf state and India may utilise this power if needed in future to stop Chinese energy flow to Gwadar port, this will be a huge weapon for India and Indian Navy at the time of escalation with China and its PLA-Navy in future. India under new PM Narendra Modi has finally started to counter China's 'Strings Of Pearls' strategy by reversing this towards China itself. Indian Navy's growing footprints at Maldives, Mauritus, Seychilles, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia will serve ad a counter to China.

My guess is chabar port will not be completed till the time Iran-us negotiations are closed.

Last week syed Akbaruddin was mentioning that there is some part from Iran's side which is yet to start pertains to the connectivity from the port into the country and Afghanistan.

India-Iran Strategic Chabahar Port to be Operational by December 2016, Will Give Access to Afghanistan, Central Asia
All India | Press Trust of India | Updated: May 24, 2015 13:19 IST

Work has already begun on the strategic India-Iran Chabahar port. (Representational Image)
He said a draft agreement will be signed within a month in this regard.

"I have given the orders to bring out tenders for purchasing cranes for the port. An agreement will be signed within a month," Mr Gadkari said.

The port will be developed through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) which will invest USD 85.21 million to convert the berths into a container terminal and a multi-purpose cargo terminal.

Access to Afghanistan's Garland Highway can be made from Chahbahar port using the existing Iranian road network and the Zaranj-Delaram road, constructed by India in 2009.

This would establish a direct road access to four of the major cities of Afghanistan - Herat, Kandahar, Kabul, and Mazar-e-Sharif.

The port will be also used to ship crude oil and urea, saving India transportation costs. It will also cut transport costs and freight time for India to Central Asia and the Gulf by about a third.

On May 6, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Mr Gadkari and Iran's Minister for Transport and Urban Development Dr Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi after comprehensive talks between Mr Gadkari and the Iranian leadership during his visit to the country.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in his meeting with Mr Gadkari, had said: "Resumption of Iran-India cooperation in the southeastern Iranian port city of Chabahar would lead to a new chapter in relations between the two countries."

The United States, however, has been asking India and other countries not to "rush" into doing business with Iran as Washington was yet to work out a deal with Tehran on the latter's contentious nuclear programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also assured Afghan President Ashraf Ghani of India's commitment to building the port.

In 2003, the NDA government under then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had signed an agreement with Iran for the Chabahar Port, but it could not be materialised at that time.

NEW DELHI: India expects the strategic Chabahar port, which will give sea-land access to Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan, to be operational by December next year, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said. Notwithstanding US objections, India earlier this month had inked a pact with Iran for the development of the port. "Work has started on the Chabahar port. There is a joint venture of Kandla Port Trust (KPT) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).... We will start port activities in a year or a year-and- a-half," Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Gadkari told PTI in an interview here. He said a draft agreement will be signed within three months in this regard. "I have given the orders to bring out tenders for purchasing cranes for the port. An agreement will be signed within a month," Gadkari said. I think it is prudent decision on part of Government of India to ignore US, as US is consistently ignoring India's interest and arming Pakistan.

The port is useless unless it connects to afghanistan. Lets see what happens , I am still not convinced the nuclear deal will pass US congress or senate.

2003-2014, thanks to UPA, this vital project was flowing in Gutter. now if GOI has fixed a timeline it can only mean that maximum work has been finished.
but do we have any insight into the security of our goods moving in afganistan?

the project was always on going even in 2004 till 2014, it was never published and was out of public glare. building a fresh port cannot finish in just 3 months out of blue. remember the road connecting delarem to zaranj was also completed in the same tenure.

India has actually committed billions for this project including Indian lives in constructing the stretch of road in afganistan, so we don't have a option to back off, additionally it is a gate way for Indian business into central asia, a huge potential market with minerals rich belt.
