The proposed land swap deal with Bangladesh is likely to be finalised during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's three-day trip to Dhaka from Tuesday.

The Prime Minister, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, would be accompanied by the chief ministers of Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya - all sharing border with Banghadesh.

Assam shares a 272-km-long long border with Bangladesh, which is in adverse possession of 665 acres of the state's land - 160 acres in the western Dhubri district and 505 acres in the southern Karimganj district.

Whats the strategic implications , is this another big blunder that will haunt india for eternity

But why agree to a land swap in the first place there should be no compromise at any level , with the current regime's weakness openly exhibited i doubt we would get a good bargain

many areas are coming under Indian control too.... overall 10,000 acres of land will be swapped...
not an issue if it can solve 4 decade long problem of demarcation of border....
irony is that the total border length is 4000 kms but the problem for demarcation of just 6.5 km led to such a huge debacle and drifting of bangladesh away from India.

even the land which is India getting inhabits many locals who says they are comfortable to be part of bangladesh instead of India... this may be because of bad image of BSF among bangladeshis and years of anti-India teachings... never the less demarcation is infact giving and taking... we are giving some land which is agreed by both sides as bangladeshi...

thats actually govt to decide.... but assimilating few hundred people in India will not be an issue... moreover the border belong to no one and everyone...few hundred ppl and about a dozen villages wont matter.. they would have crossed into India thru trains in future...

AV, Compromises have to be made if we are to have good relations with our neighbours. Just take one look at China, they were once hostile to every single one of their neighbours; today they have conceded and settled their borders with various countries from Russia to Central Asian nations to the Koreas, and now not only does China have cordial relations with those countries, but has a lot of influence there aswell. Settling border issues once and for all is an excellent move! Give and take needs to take place on both sides, and now I think the opportunity is ripe as Bangladesh has a pro-India party in power. We can finally have good relations with Bangladesh without stupid border issues making India loose out on its diplomacy.

conceded or made them concede. they took land from pakistan. full 5500 sq km, they recently took land from tajikstan, 1500 sq km. they took over islands from countries like vietnam, philipines and many other. they hold 20000 sq km of Indian territory.... RESPECT and FEAR are to separate things but overt responses to both are same ie submission....
would like to know where and when china conceded land... im talking about concession and not giving up the claim

Concession = Giving up claim.

India conceding land to Bangladesh = India giving up claim on lands it considers its own. Aswell as vice versa. Although I can understand your perception, since the Indo-Bangladeshi border is policed giving you the perception that the disputed land is Indian and India is giving it up whereelse the Chinese-CARs borders were not policed hence China giving up territory still seems to you as China gaining territory.

Tajikistan. China gained 1500 sq km of the disputed territory, while Tajikistan gained 28,000 sq kms. The border was largely undefined and neither of the countries "held" the territory militarily or politically.

Kazakhstan. China actually transferred more than 100 sq km of its territory to Kazakhstan to end this dispute, while gaining no territory from Kazakhstan in return.

India, Phillipines, and Vietnam are altogether a different ballgame. China is a seasoned player and it has got the Pakistanis to keep India busy and rare earths aswell as strategic choke points to keep the Island turfs going in South China Sea and with Japan. China does not boat for "power" and "respect", rather, it has well thought of ulterior motives. Today, China has settled its problems with the Central Asian Republics and is building pipelines through them and gaining influence there, while India hasn't even been able to make amendments in its own backyard or sway influence in nations like Bangladesh due to stupid little border disputes, and than it aspires to be a world power. India has loads to learn.

Pakistan, I do not wish to talk of, they are sleazy and double faced, where on one hand they claim Kashmir, on the other they gift Kashmiri lands to China.

India surely need to learn much and also there is need to act swiftly... but i was talkin about giving up claims regarding sikkim...
moreover tajikistan never gained any territory... china had earlier demanded 28000 sq km but settled for 1500 sq km... about 1% of tajikistan... moreover from kyrygstan you took 1270 sq km in 2000....causing widespread anger among people of that country... a happy smiling puppet shaking hand with chinese premier is not that nation as a whole being happy and comfy with china...

Well, everyone can never be happy. China relinquishing claims to those lands to Kazakhstan and Kyrgystan meant a lot of pissed off Uighurs, which saw those lands as belonging to them. The deal was, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, and the other CAR states would help in crushing any cross border Uighur militants taking refuge in those countries. At the end of the day, China won, CAR states won, the Uighurs of Xinjiang lost out.

Giving up some land in the balance is justified, only if outstanding issues can be truly buried. I am not too hopeful of that though. The moment that big biatch Khaleda Zia comes to power, expect problems and tensions again!

The way China deals with its smaller neighbors is very different from ours.
They show who's the big brother and have a no nonsense approach. We on the other hand believe in appeasement in the belief that we are winning over their hearts and minds. And all this at the cost of our own states and people .

These fools think they have achieved something marvelous. Once Khaleda or some BD Army guy comes to power they would still go to China and their ideological brethren Pakistan.
Unfortunately those who make decisions in this country have adopted the same attitude when dealing with each and every neighbor including BD,Nepal, SL.

Hail the future Super power!
