Every South East Asian country are materialistic, care about money and are pragmatic. They won't even care about China if not for the occasional hassle that China does on them.

China likes to call them 'Impartial, Objective Countries' . US likes to call them 'bystanders' and we Indians can call them 'cucks'

An alliance is about collective defence. Will our population be willing to fight for another country in another land far away which had nothing to do with us? Or might even hurt us?

Will our allies be reliable and never betray us? Or vice versa

Who will be the junior and senior partner? How will be the power sharing go? Who will pay how much?

So many things has to be internalised that it becomes a pain in the ass to follow unless a huge threat/existential threat is looming.

since British colonial days I don’t think anyone really considers india a reliable ally. Even to Russians who we claim to be pseudoallies we have not helped Russia in any war. Pakis on other hand are clear about their alliance USA, China , Saudi Arabia, turkey etc even sending soldiers like recently against Armenia.
