For eg, Raw materials for Indian drug makers worth $3.5 billion are being sourced from China on an average annually.

Almost 70% of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) comes from China. Dependence on China for such a crucial component is not prudent for India’s national security, hence there is a need to diversify its sourcing and develop domestic capacity.

The gains far outweigh the purported deficit. Its like Chinese citizens whining about iron ore imports from India and a few other nations.

India’s pharmaceutical exports grew 18.7% to $24.44 billion in the financial year ended March 31, spurred by strong demand for the country’s generic drugs.

What about domestic consumption?

If we import $1 billion worth of products, it obviously gets utilized in a gazillion ways. Indian suppliers are unreliable, quality is a huge question mark.

Lets take bags, satchels, backpacks and executive backpacks for example. Raw material including buttons, thread and zippers are imported from China. They maintain their quality and meet time commitments. Not sure how good/bad the situation has been post covid but pre-covid the Chinese were almost indispensable. Let's say a large manufacturer who makes quality backpacks imports materials worth Rs. 100 and sells it for Rs. 400 to a large corporate supplier. There is value addition, it creates jobs and brings innovation.

We cannot discount the fact that along with Chinese export growth, we are also scaling up the manufacturing/production ladder slowly but surely.

Bet most of Armasen's raw inputs are imported from China but look at the end product.

The west offshored most pf their low end manufacturing to china over the decades while keeping their higher end manufacturing at home. On the other hand we never had much of a high end manufacturing base but let the Chinese destroy our low and medium industries.
When covid second wave hit, the government had to beg the Chinese to lift export restrictions on pharma raw materials and sell us oxygen generators at eye gouging prices (all the while we are having a war like situation with the Chinese). Also you may have noticed the US did not face any blockages in either manufacturing or raw materials for its vaccine program (instead creating problems for our own program) - it obviously preserved the industrial wherewithal to do so (inspite or previously outsourced a lot of its manufacturing).
It is the trader mentality that got us into this situation, trader mentality is not going to get us out of it. PLI scheme etc are just solutions that have come out of the same trader minds - its just not going to be enough. We need time bound targeted removal of Chinese imports and other leverage, and unfortunately we just don’t have that strategic outlook, definitely seems to be missing in the current government too.

While cutting import dependence on China is important, especially w.r.t labor intensive goods; We must remember that we also import a lot capital goods from China,which helps propel our own manufacturing I have a cousin working in manufacturing industry and he says that European companies would price gouge Indian buyers until a decade ago, and many Indian producers have benefitted from cheaper, good Chinese machines..

China has no choke points. Only India is squished between Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

the Chinese removed these weaknesses by taking over Tibet and the push into Aksai Chin. India needs to change the strategic quotient by taking over Nepal and Bhutan and absorbing them into the Indian state.

Though I agree with your line of thinking, this is not possible at this moment with a hostile government in Nepal and the current geopolitical situation. The time to annex Nepal was lost by Nehru and we also looked the other way during the annexation of Tibet by China in the 50s. Now, faced with a bully intent on changing the ground positions, we must find pressure points along a 3000 km border in the mountains.

I agree with you that it would be good for India to build up infrastructure in the mountains.
