WASHINGTON: India, which is one of the few countries in the world to have significant space capabilities, is willing to work with the US to
develop anti-satellite weapons, a top diplomat has said.

"This is an area of convergence on which we would be happy to work together with the US and contribute to a multilateral agreement," Shyam Saran, Prime Minister's Special Envoy, said in his address to the Brookings Institution.

Saran was referring to the recent announcements made by the US President, Barack Obama, about his intention to join multilateral efforts to prevent military conflict in space and to negotiate an agreement to prohibit the testing of anti-satellite weapons.
India welcomes this, he said. "We have a large number of communications and resource survey satellites currently in orbit. Although this does not fall strictly within the nuclear domain, the need to ensure the peaceful uses of outer space, is important for nuclear stability and international security," Saran said.

In 2007, China had destroyed one of its own defunct satellites with a ballistic missile, sparking global concerns. In February last year, a US Navy ship too launched a missile that hit a dying spy satellite.

Wow this is an interesting development, this is one area where India can save USA a lot of money in joint collaborations.

What are we saying, we need to Test ASAT, ASAP and saran is saying that we will negotiate agreement to prohibit testing.

first we need to test then we need to negotiate any agreement

this is how things should work

LF it appears that collaboration is on the field of agreement and not on actual test of these weapons or their development.

Hey , Sayare good to see you in your new Avatar here !

You are quite right Sayare , if we want to defend first, then we should have the capabilities first , then we can talk about prohibitory agreement.

I dont think we will get any sort of cooperation on ASAT, since it is one of the state of the Art tech which will provide advance nations with tech to win any war with their adversaries.

We have already started work on ASAT.

Other countries which might have capabilities for ASAT are

US, Russia, China, UK, France, Japan, India, Israel

Future countries in 10 years or more will be Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Brazil.

Now to stop this spread and development of tech US is now arguying for ban on ASAT tests..... we will soon see some sort of international treaty comming, BTW it was the US who went againt the Space treaty.

USA is only trying to stop it becacuse they have fallen behind China and Russia in this area. Russia does not want to renew START treaty so that is a hint and USA in their hypocrisy were the first to weapons in space even when China and Russia were saying no, now that they are behind they are being cry babies until they can take the lead than weaponization of space will be ok again.

Wet need to be causious in this

first prority should be to develop and test ASAT weapon system and then work for the international ban on its use.

Bottom line: WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR NATIONAL INTEREST FIRST

If USA develops something that gives them an edge there will be no ban if they don't and stay second or third like they currently are than they will push for it either way we have IRBM's and a interceptor from our BMD work all we need is the last phase the hit to kill vehicle (which we may also have since we launched 10 satellites in one shot) but we may be waiting for the right time to introduce it to get the biggest bang for the buck.

Russia working to anti-satellite weapons
Submitted by Justin Sorkin on Fri, 03/06/2009 - 12:03

Gen. Valentin Popovkin, the deputy defense minister of Russia, stated on Thursday that Russia is working to develop anti-satellite weapons to cope with the technologies developed by other nations. The Russian deputy defense minister also said that Russia will pace up modernization of its nuclear forces.

Popovkin made the intentions clear that Russia is going to pursue its plans to strengthen its military, despite the fact that the country is going through serious financial crisis. He disclosed that Russia will get enough new missiles that will be deployed near Poland if the United States does not halt its European missile defense plans.

Popovkin clarified that Russia does continue to oppose a space arms race but it will respond to moves made by other countries. He said, "We can't sit back and quietly watch others doing that; such work is being conducted in Russia."

Meanwhile, a retired Russian general said that the satellite collision that occurred 500 miles above the Earth last month could be the US plot. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Leonid Shershnev, the former chief of Russia's military space intelligence, said that the satellite collision could be the result of a test of U. S. space-weapon technology.

Last month, an inoperative Russian satellite collided with an American telecommunications satellite, which was one of Iridium company's 66 satellites. According to Shershnev, the American satellite involved in the collision was one of the two satellites used in the NASA-Pentagon's 2007 Orbital Express experiment, in which one satellite hooked up with the other to refuel the latter. The program was ended nearly two years ago, but, Shershnev said, the program could be still operative that caused the last month's satellite collision.

"The U. S. may now be capable of manipulating hostile satellites, including their destruction, with a single command from a ground control center," Shershnev said to the Kremlin-run RIA Novosti news agency.
