India Approves Purchase of Some 200 Russian Kamov Helicopters – Reports

The Indian Defense Ministry approved on Wednesday the purchase of around 200 Russian Kamov light utility helicopters, The Times of India reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The contract is worth around $467 million, the newspaper said.

The project, alongside other major long-pending contracts, has been cleared by the defense acquisitions council chaired by Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar.

The helicopters will reportedly be assembled in India.

An agreement to assemble 400 Russian Mi-17 and Kamov-226T helicopters annually in India with the possibility of exporting them to third party countries was agreed in principle at a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December,
during the Russian leader visit to New Delhi.

Good Move by DM :yo:. Armed forces need 400 LUHs. Relying completely on untested HAL LUH would be too risky. For some reason if HAL LUH has to be grounded entire fleet of 400 has to be grounded, if you split the total requirement 200 Kas and 200 Hals risk would be mitigated, delivery would be fast. And also 'Make in India'

My guess is that this is a speculation, but still posting for info.

Gurgaon-based Sun Group front-runner for being India partner for Kamov choppers

NEW DELHI: Hidden in the details of the government's Wednesday big-bang 'Make in India' push in the defence production was the fine print about the Russian deal, by nomination not tender, to manufacture 200 Kamov Ka 226 light helicopters, so desperately needed to replace the ageing Cheetah fleet which services one of the world's highest military deployments on the Siachen glacier. Work on this had begun right after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit in December.

Assurances were exchanged then at the highest levels to look into this project. What's interesting is that Goa might just be the place where the facility may come up given that a feasibility study has been conducted to set up a chopper line there soon after Manohar Parrikar, former Goa CM, took over as defence minister.

Incidentally, if this works out, this would be the second major defence project for the state. The minister has already announced that the Goa Shipyard has been nominated to construct 12 minesweepers for the Indian Navy in a contract that is expected to cost over $1 billion. While Russian Helicopters (RH) is in talks with a handful of possible Indian partners, the lead contender happens to be the Gurgaon-based Sun Group.

The deal, insiders said, may see the group cornering a significant share of the pie, which could cross $700 million. RH is likely to produce at least 200 choppers in India.

However, the company is also looking at involving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), though partnerships with other private firms are not ruled out.The Sun Group, whose vice-chairman and founder Shiv Vikram Khemka has been a non-executive director on the board of RH since 2011, has already set up a set up a helicopter division and is likely to be involved in the Make in India project.

While Sun did not respond to a detailed questionnaire sent by ET, company officials said things were at a preliminary stage and it was too early to comment.

Sources say the Sun Group was also an offset partner for RH in a previous competition to supply light choppers to the army. That process was, however, cancelled by the government last year.

Defence ministry officials, who did not wish to be quoted, told ET that the RH deal has effectively killed any other light helicopter project for the armed forces, including a process that was initiated earlier this year for an Indian-led JV to manufacture a new range of choppers.

Several companies, including Tata, L&T and Reliance Infra has responded to a request for information.

Sir, political considerations might have played a role, as it happens in many such purchases. However, even if we set that aside, and look at it from the technical point of view, the coaxial rotor system is a major technical advantage as it gives the helicopter (1) more stability in windy conditions and (2) the absence of a tail rotor makes it suitable for operating on a vessel where space is at a premium.

This is the best part of this article. I cannot wait to see these Kamovs rolling out of Indian factories. Even if they are assembled from kit, that is better than importing fully built. More local jobs, and part of the MoD budget gets injected back into India.

Modi is doing a lot of things right just like he is messing a few other things up.

Non issues. One issue is an issue for those who lack understanding of state craft, another is usual socialist bull crap. Can't believe you said Modi will turn Indian labour to bots.

Very good move to license produce Ka-226 helicopter.

Modi is the first Prime Minister in independent India who is working untiring to further India's interests. Even Mr Vajpayee is not in Modi's league. Since Modi has actually started delivering, many people are red-faced. There is no dearth of anti-national Indians. Indians are very good in talking India down.

The strength of India will grow only IF India takes defence seriously. No amount of economic development will make India secure. The military and police are key components of State power, which must be understood by every Indian.

I am very happy that government has finally moved on transport plane and light helicopter. This will go a long way in creating a private sector aviation industry in this country. I want to see an India that makes 500 aircrafts per year of different types. This will not get achieved through HAL which struggles to meet modest targets.

that's statecraft my friend , carrot and stick.
Modi is a politician. I wouldn't put too much weight on the words of a politician. Anyway, my disapproval of Modi's actions are in the two threads. As far as this thread is concerned, I approve of his initiatives.

Right. but strength or national strength is very wide and comprehensive which includes many elements such as population, education, technical expertise, raw resources, production capacity, industrial development, infrastructure, economic development, political stability, social cohesion, enterprise, innovation, territorial size - you name it and that forms part of national strength .. Defence forces and Police are but one small part of it.

No amount of economic development will make India secure. The military and police are key components of State power, which must be understood by every Indian.
Security essentially is an economic activity at individual or national level. In an interview Manohar Parricker has said that expenditure on security is unavoidable but it is one system which one wishes that he never uses it. If one has money one can buy security or rather if one wants security he has got be having money. China is an example and so is any other country. Economic development is foundation of all ingredient that make national strength including weapons and manpower.

  • Ka-226T
Instead of Rolls-Royce 250C engines, this variant is fitted with the more powerful Turbomeca Arrius 2G1. Each engine provides 670 shp, increasing the service ceiling to around 7000m, providing improved high altitude and high temperature operation.[4] Helicopter has new avionics with multifunctional displays, automatic control system, navigation system, radar. It can be equipped with hoist system, helicopter sling, searchlight, additional external fuel tank. For search and rescue missions helicopter can be equipped with medical module.
