Indian Navy For 5 More Fleet Tankers

The Indian Navy has announced interest in acquiring five new fleet support ships under the 'global buy'' category. The Navy has stipulated it requires ships with displacement of 40,000 tons in fully loaded condition, 200-metres long and a maximum beam of 25-metres. The Navy also requires its new ships to be capable of speeds "not less than 20 knots of maximum continuous speed, at ambient temperatures upto 40 deg C, in the fully laden condition upto Sea State 3 and while less than six months out of dock". With a projected complement of 190 sailors and 24 officers, the ship will need to handle one multi-role helicopter.

The Indian Navy last commissioned two Fincantieri-built tankers INS Deepak and INS Shakti into its fleet.

Country flag
Bit old piece of information about the RFP issued for five fleet support ships (FSS) in April 2013.

From Geopolitics magazine July 2013 issue
June 2013 Pg 32-34
- The ships would be in 'Buy Global' procurement head (ie imports) as all Indian yards are chock full of orders.
- capable of handling 16 ton helicopters
- Projected size: length 200m, beam 25m, displacement around 40,000 tons, draught<10m
- Payload of 20,000 tons LSHSD, 2500 tons AVCAT, 1000 tons fresh water, 1400 tons feed water
- minimum of 60 day endurance; 12,000 nm at 16 knots, 9000 nm at 20 knots with 25% on board fuel left
- crew of 190
- two L-band radar, one E/F band radars
- should be able to maintain a speed of 20 knots at 40 degree Celcius, must have good fuel economy at 15 knots
- Seaworthy up to sea state 8, helicopter operations up to sea state 5, combat capable till sea state 5, survivable up to sea state 9, capable of replenishment at sea role till sea state 5
- First delivery in three years of signing contract with one every six months.

This is going to cost a bomb.

Funny, but the only ship of this displacement requirement is the Wichita class from the US and another one from China.

I wonder if there are ships on the drawing board with such specs.

EDIT: Hmm, there seem to be more ship classes available, including newer ones.
