IGLA-S man-portable air defence missile system

Purpose: the system is designed to engage front line aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and UAVs under direct visibility conditions and in the night time, head-on and tail chase, in background clutter and thermal countermeasures environment.

IGLA-S MANPADS is a new-generation system featuring considerably extended firing range and enhanced kill probability against aerial targets and possessing a new quality for this class of systems - high engagement effectiveness against small-size targets like cruise missiles and UAVs.


Main features of IGLA-S system:

* enhanced kill probability against aerial targets and increased warhead lethality due to:
o increased HE quantity (by 1.5 times as compared to IGLA system);
o in-depth impact detonation of the missile warhead adjusting the rate of embedding to the approach speed;
o proximity detonation of the missile warhead (in the event of mishit) with optimization of the detonation point;
o detonation of the sustainer's remaining solid propellant;
o advanced missile accuracy characteristics.
* extended firing range of up to 6.0 km as compared with 5.2 km for IGLA system due to missile improved aerodynamic characteristics;
* night firing capability due to application of a night vision device holder and a light weight night vision device development.
* easy installation on various platforms
Unified modules are the base for:
o formation of "air-air" guided weapon system;
o formation of a mobile air defence missile system of high covertness;
o combination with AD gun systems;
o combination with medium and long range air defence systems;
o formation of shipborne air defence systems.

IGLA-S system is a successor of IGLA missile system family outperforming them in effectiveness, reliability, service life and survivability and retaining their best merits:
# shoulder firing by a single gunner;
# "fire-and-forget" concept;
# high resistance to background clutter and thermal countermeasures;
# easy aiming and launching;
# easy maintenance and training;
# high covertness of use;
# retained operability in extreme operational environment.

I think India should acquire this system in large numbers as it will be a very effective weapon in Mountains[Pak & china border].

India already uses the igla (SA-16 Gimlet), The Igla is an old weapon first commisioned into the soviet military in 1981, it is qute acommon weapon and the taliban and LTTE have also been known to use them read this about the threat from MANPADS

It looks monstrous in size probably we should retire these things and replaced with Javelins.

British Javelin. Are we showing interest on them?
IA has shown interest in the American FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile. The British Javelin MANPAD is nowadays considered as obsolete.

Saab Products 70 - Short Range Air Defence Missile System

Man-portable/Vehicle-mounted Air Defence Missile System
RBS 70 is one of Saab Bofors Dynamics´ most well-known and established products. It is currently operational or procured by 23 users, on all continents and used in arctic, desert as well as tropical environments. It is, in addition to Army users, also operational with other services such as Air Force, Navy and Marines. More than 16,000 missiles in four generations have been produced.
RBS 70 has been developed as a complete missile system with the potential for being integrated with most wheeled and tracked vehicles.

The RBS 70 is superior to other competitive man-portable air defence missile systems. Because of its long intercept range in the head-on sector range, it really belongs to a class other than the VSHORAD.

The 4th generation of the RBS 70 system has non-cooled laser transmitter minimising reaction times and logistic support. The 4th generation system incorporates the BOLIDE all-target missile, BORC clip-on thermal imager, a digital IFF Interrogator, a PC-based training simulator and an external power supply for training.

The RBS 70 has been under constant improvement adapted to the most sophisticated future threat and using the latest solutions in missile technology.



Examples of improvements are:

• BOLIDE missile with all-target capability, including small targets
• BORC clip-on thermal imager with a 320 x 240 Focal Plane Array
• TSA 1421 digital IFF Interrogator prepared for future Mode 5
• Non-cooled laser diodes minimising reaction time and logistic support
• Training simulator with COTS computers and HLA interface
• External Power Supply for cost-effective training

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

In its basic configuration, the RBS 70 comprises a stand, sight and missile. In vehicle applications, the RBS 70 can easily be dismounted and used independently.

In a complete system configuration, several fire units can be connected to surveillance radar, such as Giraffe or HARD, enabling all C4I functions. If the RBS 70 is not interfaced with surveillance radar, it can of course operate autonomously.

With the BORC clip-on thermal imager, the RBS 70 has a 24 hours capability. A complete fire unit consisting of the weapon itself, Night Sight and a Weapon Terminal is self-sufficient and requires only batteries as power supply. Thus, almost no logistic support is required. The high 94% system reliability has been verified during more than 1,600 live firings. A recognised high system quality gives very low maintenance cost.

THE BOLIDE MISSILE

The BOLIDE missile (also used in the ASRAD-R system) uses a unique unjammable laser beam riding guidance, providing incomparable accuracy. BOLIDE has an intercept range of 8 km and altitude coverage in excess of 5,000 m. A high capability against small targets such as cruise missiles and UAVs is provided by a unique adaptive proximity fuze function, optimising the initiation point of the warhead. The missile’s combined warhead, with both fragmentation and shaped charge effect, provides a high kill probability against any aerial threat. Targets down to ground level can effectively be combated. The laser-operated proximity fuze, which can be disconnected, is unjammable like the guidance system.

SIMULATOR TRAINING

Using the state-of-the-art RBS 70 simulator, a missile operator has the ability to engage difficult targets after just a few hours of training. The simulator, utilising commercial computers and OpenFlight format for all 3D models (terrain, targets, missile, etc), has a large number of pre-programmed target scenarios and the instructor can create any training situation with various kinds of targets. A thorough evaluation, presentation and saving of the result, as well as a visualisation of the effect in a target, provides an effective motivation and training. Any tactical situation can be trained, e.g. with target designation from a C3I function, using IFF Interrogator and Night Sight.

The RBS 70 Video Recorder Attachment is available to evaluate live firing, but also for recording during tracking training against real targets using the combat equipment.

RBS-70 is good but remember that the role of manpad is to form the last line of defence.there is no use in extending its range to 8 kms & so on, for that there are SRSAM. The most imp thing which matters in MANPAD is the SEEKER
Technology along with speed & agility & Igla-S has the most advanced seeker & is agile.Manpad is meant to shoot down low flying targets.
In short - RBS-70 has everything but excels in nothing & Igls-S has 1 thing which is capable of taking down any fighter aircraft in the world including F-22.
Igla-S seeker operates in UV & IR & is almost impossible to jam.

Are you sure about that?also even if that were true any MANPAD would have no chance against a F-22(or a SU-30 for that matter) reason outlined below.
With the Advent of long range air to ground weapons the MANPAD is already obsolete as an anti-fixed wing aircraft missile, most modern aircraft will launch their weapons at the target before coming anywhere near the target envelope of a MANPAD. In today's scenario the MANPAD is relevant for one thing only that is the protection of mobile assets like TEL vehicles and tank formations from helicopter attack.
