I read stories such as these and cannot help but wish that feeding poor people and lifting them out of poverty were as important to the egos of some politicians as some silly, 1970s-based space race.
There are hundreds of millions of rural poor in India - hundreds of millions - and yet the country's priorities are not helping these people or, indeed, keeping them from dying in penury, but rather stroking the egos of some sad old men with vanity projects such as these that bring little practical benefit to the population at large.
This just makes me very sad, as ultimately very few will benefit from this wasteful expenditure, but in the end very many will lose. As they have always done.
From the comment section of a mainstream Brit newspaper.

Like it's much illustrious cousin, this thread aims to be a repository for asinine, racist and ignorant comment from the firang land. Let us preserve those gems of wisdom for posterity.

Mate you are truly a mind reader :namaste:

The problem with the Brits is that they don't see within about the myriad problems they might have.

http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/members-corner/52175-british-website-trashing-india.html

According to wikipedia, Britain with about 5 million people have more number of rapes than India with 1.25 billion, lol

Cameron is coming to India. He will beg for military and defence contracts from this country, our politicians are so pathetic that we will probably give some to them.

Assam Rape Fest' story in US media triggers row

An American news satire website's play of words and comment on the security of women in India, and particularly in Assam, has evoked sharp criticism from netizens. Social media is abuzz with reactions - many believing the satire to be "true news" - after the website published a report headlined, 'The Assam Rape Festival In India Begins This Week' on November 3.

The report, first published on NationalReport.net, which claims to be America's Number 1 independent news team, was widely shared on social media. The report was later picked up by many websites and forums. With the frenzy snowballing, a few others tried to explain that the report was indeed a satire although it was not written anywhere on the website that it publishes fake news.

On Thursday, Assam criminal investigation department registered a suo motu case against the website for posting the defamatory article.

Commenting on Facebook, Arindom Phukan pointed out that the website had nowhere mentioned that the story was a satire. Ironically, the report was shared more than 89,500 times on Facebook and around 1,000 times on Twitter. "Men in India are already beginning to celebrate as the annual Assam Rape Festival is just days away. Every non-married girl age 7-16 will have the chance to flee to safety or get raped," the write-up said.

Commenting on the post, one Terrance believed that the report was true and went on to write, "India is always raping something. Makes me sick!"

Cursing the male gender, one Hannah wrote, "God have mercy on these innocent women... what kind of tradition is this. All you have to know is that God is watching you and you are going to pay for your sins."

Giving the link to the 'news story', the NationalReport posted on Facebook, "We would recommend foreign travelers avoid #India this week during the #AssamRapeFestival! Don't say we didn't warn you!" The Facebook page also claims itself to be one of the 'most accurate news' on the web.

Web archives shows that NationalReport's now deleted disclaimer page read, "NationalReport is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways."

It can not get pathetic than this...Or it just might...lets wait and watch...

and these a**ho*** claim to be our natural allies and what not. Defining partnership of the 21st century, my ass.

On a different note,

Who the hell cares guys, everyone knows there are more number of rapes in America and England (yes, its a fact) than in India. Are they worried about what we think of them?

Actually its this stupid Government's fault for aligning ourselves with nations (read America, England) that we will never get along with, and that too at the cost of our relations and friendship with Russia and Iran. We will never be able to forgive the UPA Government for the blunders.

Do anyone here know what has been the reaction in the Russian media regarding all the negative news that has been coming out of this country lately?

Coming to United Fu**dom, David Cameron is coming to India in a few days, no doubt would be begging for more defence contracts, I would urge the Indian Government to show some spine and not give away alms to that beggar anymore.

Viking apocalypse: End of the world predicted to happen today :scared2:

Heather Saul,The Independent | Feb 22, 2014, 12.51 PM IST

LINK: timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/rest-of-world/Viking-apocalypse-End-of-the-world-predicted-to-happen-today/articleshow/30842054.cms

The end of the world is almost upon us if Norse mythology is to be believed, which predicts the Earth will split open and release the inhabitants of the underworld on 22 February.

On Saturday, according to Norse legend at least, the series of events leading up to Ragnarok will culminate in an epic battle, where Norse gods Thor, Loki, Odin, Freyr, Hermoor, will fight. Odin will be killed by Fenrir and the other creator gods will fall.

The Earth will fall into the sea, and life as we know it will cease to be.

It's not all bad news though, as the world will re-emerge anew and fertile, and two human survivors will be in charge of repopulating the Earth.

Ragnarok is described in the 13th century Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturluson. The Vikings believe Ragnarok occurs after three freezing winters, with no summers in between.

Experts from the Jorvik Viking Centre predicted the world would end on 22 February to coincide with the grand finale of the 30th Jorvik Viking Festival.

According to the group, the sound of an ancient horn could be heard across the rooftops of York on 15 November last year, as "a portent of doom and the beginning of a countdown to the Norse apocalypse".

The horn belonged to Norse god Heimdallr, who would blow it to mark 100 days before impending doom and a countdown is now running on the festival website.

Festival director Danielle Daglan said: "Ragnarok is the ultimate landmark in Viking mythology, when the gods fall and die, so this really is an event that should not be underestimated.

"In the last couple of years, we've had predictions of numerous dates where the end of the world has been penciled in by seers, fortune tellers and visionaries, but the sound of the horn is possibly the best indicator yet that the Viking version of the end of the world really will happen on 22 February next year."

'Norsemen' from across Britain will converge on York to celebrate the Jorvik festival, which runs from 15 to 23 February. The festival is running its own dedicated social media feed where participants will be encouraged to tweet using the hashtag #ragnarok2014.

The festival is even promising to equip visitors "with the tools to survive the apocalypse, from hunting for the mightiest and strongest warriors to training children in combat skills", Daglan added.

Should the apocalypse not occur on Saturday, it will join a string of failed predictions including the Mayan Apocalypse that said the world would be destroyed by an interplanetary object on 21 December 2012.

Man sues McDonald's for $1.5 million 'because they gave him only one napkin'
Antonia Molloy,The Independent, Feb 28, 2014

LINK: timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/Man-sues-McDonalds-for-1-5-million-because-they-gave-him-only-one-napkin/articleshow/31174257.cms

LONDON: A man is suing McDonald's for $1.5million in a dispute allegedly sparked off by the fact that he was given only one napkin with his meal. Webster Lucas claimed he is "unable to work" due to the "emotional distress" caused by the incident at the outlet in Pacoima, California, TMZ reported.

Lucas launched the lawsuit following the confrontation on 29 January.

He claimed he was given one serviette when he ordered a Quarter Pounder Deluxe, but when he went to the counter to ask for more, he was refused by the manager.

Lucas, who is African-American, alleged that the Mexican-American manager was racist towards him and mumbled something that sounded like "you people".

He subsequently emailed the fast food chain to complain, saying has had suffered "undue mental anguish" as a result of the incident.

According to TMZ, he was offered free burgers, but is now seeking $1.5 million in compensation.
Is this law applicable in India too?

This has to be a troll.

The use of English is the most enduring and profitable legacy of the Raj; without it, the boom in Indian call-centre and software industries could not have happened.
Close ties with Britain give India better access to the rest of Europe. Just as Empire opened the doors of modernity to India, a good relationship between Britain and India will be a mark of how prominent both countries are in the modern world.
All that is best about India - its tolerance, freedom and engagement with the world - has flourished due to the structures and ideas it inherited from British rule.
Not even mad.
