Ironically it was a combination of such bizarre stuff as above along with the anarchy of post WW-1 Germany on one side & the hedonism on the other side made worse by the Great Depression which brought the Nazis to power & consolidated the 3rd Reich.

Hopefully we'd be seeing an encore, if not immediately then a generation or 2 down the road for the furnace once put out takes a lot of time & effort to rekindle.
