Israeli Air Force test pilots are flying MIG 29 jets and conducting dogfights against the IAF's F-16 fighters, Channel 2 revealed Wednesday evening.

The MIG 29, developed by the soviets in the 1970s, is one of the best fighter jets used by eastern and Arab countries, as well as by Syria and Iran. It was developed to counter American-made jets such the F-16 or F/A-18.

The jets were loaned to Israel by an unnamed foreign country. The experiment is meant to prepare IAF pilots for missions where they might have to fight a foreign air-force.

"We tested them - we trained the IAF pilots against them," an unnamed IAF official said.

The IAF employs ten test pilots. The training of each costs about a million dollars, but the experience gleaned from the test pilots, the unnamed official said, "is priceless."

"You fly in places and in certain conditions in a way never attempted before," an unidentified test pilot said. "Once, a piece of the jet's body broke during an experiment but the crew managed to land it safely."

A test jet is just like a regular one, except for special sensors which cover literally every aspect of its mechanical and electronic systems and can be monitored from the ground for assessment.

An additional experiment conducted recently by the air force involved loading an F-16 with weapons to its utmost capacity, or "flight in a heavy formation," as the test pilot labeled it. The experiment was meant to measure the pilot's safety and the fighter's capability when it was carrying the maximum amount of armaments.

A jet so armed might be used in a long-distance sortie. The pilots interviewed would not name which foreign countries might be the targets of such sorties, but it was clear the main target of such an ambitious mission would be Iran's nuclear installations.

the word friendly country used there is very obvious israel has very few friendly countries which fly the mig 29 most western powers consider the mig 29 s as junk their impression and assesment came from the war experiences with arab countries in the past which flew the mig 29 and they are correct.
but in present times only 2 countries can lease out these mig 29s to israel one india which is highly propable since now-a-days they are the best mates round the world second russia < ok dont laugh > i say these because russia is also getting smarter and understand business they understand when there is war there are bound to be great weapon sales image a war breaks out between israel and iran russia could make billions selling weapons to iran similary they can lease these planes to israel they want to get back some israeli uav technology in exchange nad such a hidden deal can be possible this is just a mere speculation and no fact
but chances of them been indian is very high ...

It could be either USA or India.

I am just inclined to think it might be India for the simple reason that usually USA's name is mentioned when USA gives military aid to Israel. Lending fighters for combat practice is considered indirect military aid. Its not even a secret that USA helps Israel a lot.

India, on the other hand, would want this news to be secret since we do have good relations with Iran, and wouldn't want to make it look like we are aiding Israel. Also, Israel would prefer Indian MiG-29s since they are upgraded by Russia, and more likely to represent the MiG-29s Iran or even Syria might field.

However it is also possible that USA lent their MiG-29s and don't want to appear overtly supportive of Israel attacking Iran, and thus demanded confidentiality. Its also possible that we just won;t give our MiG-29s in fear of upsetting Iran.

However, if these MiG-29s are Indian, i hope Israel lends us their F-16s to practice against. It will serve the double purpose of training our pilots against the best variant of the f-16 and enable IAF top brass to critically evaluate F-16 for MRCA.

It can,t be India. Russia won,t allow the Indian to lent their mig-29 to Israel. why would Russia allow somebody( Israel) to lay there hands on there weapons and to generate new tactics to counter that?
just my thought!~

Su47,

be rest assured if this is indian af mig29 which looks like to be the case then our pilots will get a chance to extensively train with/against their f16. in the past 2 of our pilots had been deputed to train along side with the israeli af and in a trade off their two pilots had a similar chance to train with our pilots. such exercises always have a trade off and as and when we train against/along their f16s it will be kept under the wraps as usual. we have regularly trained along side the f16s of the singaporean af and we have an agreement with them under which they train in india in our air space some where based close to kolkata so we do have a fair idea of how a certain f16 functions, handles what are its advantages and how can this threat be countered.

iran should have no reason to get offended what so ever, we have trained their armed forces personnel on regular basis, upgraded their military equipment to make them more lethal and even today our two countries have a lot of common interest areas on which we have to work together and we happen to be one of their largest oil consumers so at the end of the day they learn and earn a lot from us.

It can be the Americans. They have the Moldovan MiG 29s.

India has a good relations with Israel, but then its stated policy of not antagonizing the Arabs will not allow it to go so far as loaning a few MiGs to train.

And which country in the world will just give out one its best fighters to another country for the purpose of practice? Hell even in combat exercises, we switch off our radars so that the other country, obviously a friend or an ally, doesnt come to know of its potential. And we are here talking about just giving away our fighters to another country.

Besides, giving the MiG of the IAF which are much better than the Moldovan ones that the US bought will give away information to the west regarding the latest capabilities of the 29, and in all likelyhood the counter they develop can reach our neighbor in the west in the form of aid for fighting terror.

So in all likely hood it will be the US provided samples.

They sold (well gave away for a symbolic price) all but one of their Mig 29's to Poland, they didn't hand any over to Israel. Poland apparently lent one to Israel for a while though, although the wording in the article is plural. Suggesting more than one.

There have been unconfirmed reports that Poland had at one point leased a MiG-29 from their own inventory to Israel for evaluation and the aircraft has since been returned to Poland, as suggested by photographs of a MiG-29 in Israeli use.

no guys i am certain the mig-29s are Indian, beginning last year there was report of an exchange program between IAF and ISAF, a squadron of mig-29 pilots would fly and train on the f-16I soufa while a squad of Issy F-16 pilots would fly the mig-29 for a whole year and i think these dogfights and other training exercises are the end of this training period.

In already growing close relationship by India and Israeli has got a new boost when Indian air force (IAF) and Israel Defense Forces/Air Force (IDFAF) have agreed to exchange pilots between the two air arm, IDFAF pilot posted in India will be flying MiG-29B Baaz operating from Adampur Airbase which is located in western India (Punjab) 100 kilometers East of the Pakistan border, Adampur is one of 14 Indian Airbases under the Western Air Command within 300 kilometers of the Pakistan border. Adampur Airbase is home to at least 70 combat aircraft including two squadrons of MiG- 29s, (No. 47 Squadron - MiG-29A/C/UB” Black Archers”, No. 223 Squadron - MiG-29A/C/UB “Tridents”) two squadrons of MiG-23s and a squadron of MiG- 21s, while IAF pilot will be attached with Israeli Tayset squadron which operates F-16C/D Barak from Hatzor air force base Located near the lower west coast of Israel , Hatzor airbase is home to three squadrons of F-16 A/B/C/D operated by 101 , 105 , 144 Squadrons by IDFAF , similarly pilots from the Transport wing will also be exchanged IAF pilot will be attached to C-130 Squadron and a IDFAF pilot will be attached to IL-76 Squadron and IAF Helicopter pilot will be attached to CH-53 Squadron and a IDFAF pilot will be attached to MI-17 units ,this exchanged pilots will carry out routine training sorties from their respected posted Squadrons and after completion of their tenure will be replaced by other pilots from their respected air forces, Mig-29 is also operated by Syria and Iran which have hostile relationship with Israel and F-16 is operated by Pakistan which has hostile relationship with India ,these agreement will help deep understanding of functioning and tactics of each others air arm and also give deep insight into aircrafts operated by their rivals
