IDC: Chinese companies overtake LG and HTC in smartphone charts | The Verge

Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the world's smartphone market, but emerging Chinese companies are starting to climb the ranks. That's according to IDC's latest report on global smartphone shipments for Q4 2012, released earlier this week. The market research firm's data show that China's leading manufacturers, Huawei and ZTE, enjoyed robust year-on-year growth in 2012, placing them among the world's top five handset makers. Huawei's market share jumped by 89.5 percent over the year — higher than any other smartphone maker — while ZTE's share grew by 48.4 percent.

Huawei is now ranked third among smartphone vendors with 10.8 million units shipped last quarter, marking the first time it has ever cracked the top five. ZTE dropped one spot to number five, on the strength of 9.5 million quarterly shipments. Their rise has displaced both LG and HTC, which have seen their shares gradually decline in recent quarters.

Both, however, still trail Samsung and Apple by a significant margin. Korea-based Samsung led IDC's rankings with 63.7 million Q4 shipments last year, good for a 29 percent market share. Over the year, the company's share has increased by an impressive 76 percent. Apple, meanwhile, saw its share jump by just 29.2 percent over the year, but still came in second last quarter, with 47.8 million shipments and a 21.8 percent market share — nearly 17 percent higher than third-ranked Huawei. Rounding out the top five is fourth-place Sony, which shipped 9.8 million smartphones last quarter.

CHINA'S LEADERS HAVE TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO HIGHER-END DEVICES

But the rise of China's industry remains the most notable takeaway from IDC's report, and something that could represent a major inflection point in the world's market.

"The fact that Huawei and ZTE now find themselves among the Top 5 smartphone vendors marks a significant shift for the global market," said IDC research manager Ramon Llamas. "Both companies have grown volumes by focusing on the mass market, but in recent quarters they have turned their attention toward higher-end devices. In addition, both companies have pushed the envelope in terms of industrial design with larger displays and smaller form factors, as well as innovative applications and experiences."

Last quarter marked the first time that ZTE shipped more smartphones than feature phones, reflecting a strategy that the Chinese government hopes to replicate across its entire electronics sector. Earlier this week, the country released a new set of objectives for its leading tech manufacturers, encouraging them to more tightly integrate supply chains and to produce higher-end finished products.

Huawei and ZTE's growth is even more impressive in light of their struggles to crack the US market. Both companies came under intense scrutiny last year, after a government report labeled them a national security threat, citing close ties with the Chinese government. Thus far, however, it doesn't seem to have had an effect on their bottom lines. Earlier this week, Huawei announced that its net profits grew by 33 percent last year, despite its ongoing stateside controversy.

China's Huawei claims world's fastest smartphone

BARCELONA (AFP) - China's Huawei, the number three smartphone maker behind giants Samsung and Apple, unveiled Sunday a new mobile, the Ascend P2, which it claims is the fastest in the world.

Sharp-cornered and thinner than a pencil at 8.4 mm, the company said it can achieve speeds of 150 Mbps, fast enough to download a two-hour high-definition movie in less than five minutes.

The mobile, which has a 4.7-inch, high definition screen, has a powerful 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and is able to use the fourth-generation high speed mobile networks being rolled out worldwide.

Unveiling the device on the eve of the opening Monday of the four-day Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the company said it was "the world's fastest smartphone," smashing all previous records.

Huawei said its phone surpassed top speeds of 100 Mbps for the fourth-generation network ready versions of Apple's flagship iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy SIII.

The Ascend P2 will launch in France through Orange in June and is also expected to be available worldwide during the second quarter of 2013, it said.

"Ascend P2 downloads HD movies in minutes, and loads online videos, web pages, songs or e-Books in seconds," Huawei said in a company statement issued at the launch.

The phone, which includes a 13 megapixel camera, is the latest shot in Huawei's battle against the fast-growing market's titans Samsung and Apple.

Samsung and Apple accounted for more than half of all smartphone sales in the final quarter of 2012 -- 29.0 percent for Samsung and 22.1 percent for Apple -- according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Behind Samsung and Apple, however, Chinese firms held the third, fourth and fifth spots -- with 5.3 percent for Huawei, 4.7 percent for ZTE and 4.4 percent for Lenovo.

when doing business you need to know about the ongoing situation.....when the market is dominated by famous brands from developed nations you either dont think of getting in the business or choose to start from where those brands dont care about too much.....

to begin with developing countries plus chinese domestic market is a good choice........efforts are already getting paid off......huawai and ZTE may be better at the beginning among chinese brands but i believe we will see the day when lenovo can rule a large part of the world......

^^^^^^^^Spot on Sir very true. ZTE closed its operations in India heres the link :-
ZTE Corporation to shut R&D operations in India - Economic Times

Lenovo in India is facing tough competition in India , In premium category Asus n HP r eating its pie while Acer n Toshiba r making its life tough in mid range category....

Comparatively in Mobile phone arena Huawei is still not known brand......Local Indian Brands well u may say "rebranded" smart phones here come at a reasonably affordable price with decent features.....Dual core Phablets along with 4.5 inch Screen Android ICS n Jelly bean phones r common here.......Though Premium market still belongs to Nokia, Samsung,LG, HTC, Blackberry n Apple...ZTE provides at least 15-20 % smart phone's parts markets share in mobile category.....

LG mostly sells flip handsets, very few smartphones. HTC sells some, but it is known as the Acer of smartphones. To claim to overtake them based on sales in China isn't very impressive.

Fall of those big names is really disheartening. I'd been always with Nokia, until a Motorola. But now...

Then I hv to say thank-u to ZTE for I made thousands of $$$ out of its shares.
