ICAR to induct 1,000 more scientists, introduce new syallabus

New Delhi (PTI): The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is recruiting 1,000 more scientists to replenish its depleting workforce and introducing a new syllabus to boost farm research.

"By the end of this year, we will be inducting a total of 1,000 more scientists into the ICAR. As many as 500 have already joined while the selection process for the rest is on," ICAR Director General Mangala Rai told PTI.

Before the recruitment this year, the organisation had 5,000 scientists working in different areas of farm research.

The fresh recruitment is expected to strengthen the agriculture research system, which has witnessed a drain of talents from state universities at a time when the country is struggling to end a staganation in the farm sector output.

"There are lots of vacancies in state universities," Rai said, but added that agriculture and farm research are not central subjects and the state governments need to work on this.

There are about 20,000 farm scientists in different state universities across the country.

Rai said from this year ICAR is introducing a new syllabus for students which has been prepared keeping in view the latest developments in agricultural research around the world.
