The Air Wing of Border Security Force (BSF) added a new chapter with the induction of its own pilots and crew today. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju became the first dignitary to be flown by “all BSF” aircrew, aboard the MI-17 V5 helicopter from Guwahati. This is a significant achievement and shows the confidence and capability of managing its resources and expanding the operational envelop of recently inducted modern MI-17 V5 choppers. Wing Commander H.D. Lohani (Retd.) and Wing Commander S. Malik (Retd.) both appointed as Commandant/Pilot recently, were part of the crew for this historic occasion. Till now the BSF aircrafts were being operated by Aircrew from the Indian Air Force.

India's Border Guards Push for Big Purchases to Expand Aircraft Fleet
India's Border Security Force has sought more fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in its proposal to strengthen its existing air fleet in a bid to improve its response in border areas.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — The Border Security Force (BSF) has submitted a detailed plan of procurement of fixed and rotary wing airplane to the Ministry of Home Affairs, sources in BSF that did not wish to be named told Sputnik. "BSF has submitted acquisition plan for different time frames sometime back. The Ministry of Home Affairs is in an advanced stage of discussion on the plan," the sources said.

The BSF and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, which guards the India-China border, have sought aircraft to transport logistics and troops in Himalayan terrain. The two have also sought helicopters for air maintenance along border areas.

Earlier, a highly-placed BSF official told Sputnik about the necessity of more helicopters such as Mi-17 V-5 apart from the available five Mi-17 V-5, which are controlled by the Indian Air Force. India and Russia are expected to sign the deal to purchase 48 Mi-17 V-5 medium lift helicopters this year.

BSF's Air Wing Fleet comprises Embraer-135 J, Avro (HS-748) and Super King B-200 aircraft in fixed wing and ALH (Dhruv), Cheetah, Mi-17 V5, ALH and Mi-17 1V in Rotary Wing.

BSF had projected a total expenditure of $2.56 billion for 2017-18 which received the substantial budgetary support of $2.3 billion from the finance ministry.

Following several terrorist attacks on Army camps, the Indian government has augmented the purchase of equipment in a bid to minimize infiltration and swift response in case of any attack, especially along Pakistan border.

Since I couldn't find a thread to post news about Mi 8, Mi 17, Mi 26, Ch 47, Ka226 (and HAL made transport helicopters combined), I thought this might be useful to collect useful infos.

Let's start by properly saying good bye to the Mi 8...

Mi-8’s saga comes to an end
DEC 10, 2017

“It was probably the aircraft that was shot at the most,” says Air Marshal P.P. Rajkumar about the Mi-8 helicopter. He has logged more than 3,000 hours on the aircraft and has no hesitation in declaring that the most-produced helicopter in the world is a colossus.

The Mi-8 covered itself in glory and bullet wounds in the Siachen, during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka and a UN Mission in Congo, besides coming under fire from insurgents in the North East. It has been part of several scientific expeditions to Antarctica. Now it is being phased out.

The emotional bond we forged with the Mi-8 (also called Pratap in the IAF) was strong. Most of us started flying it in our 20s and probably associated more with the helicopter than with anyone else,” says Rajkumar. He knows engineers who remember the numbers of the aircraft they worked on even today long after they have forgotten their colleagues’ names...

Glimpses of #MI8 Phasing Out Ceremony: The MI-8 salutes the Nation by dipping its nose for one last time . ACM (Retd) Fali Homi Major flew the last sortie on the formidable machine. Air Marshal SRK Nair, AOC-in-C, Training Command, released the book “The Glorious Pratap”.

Thank you for your service!

IAF to Ink Deal for 48 new Mi-17 V5 helicopters from Russia
December 2017

“Negotiations with the Indian side have been completed, and we hope to sign the contract in 2018, ” Russian Helicopters CEO Andrei Boginsk was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency RIA Novosti December 17. However sources told India Strategic that signatures should be appended on the deal by both the sides in the first quarter of 2018.

The company has already delivered 151 Mi-17 V5 helicopters to India beginning with a deal for 80 machines in 2008, and then another 71 under three follow-on contracts. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) had cleared the purchase of fifth lot of 48 of these military transport helicopters in September 2015...

India, Russia in advanced talks for 48 additional Mi-17V5 helicopters for $1.1-billion

Sources said that price negotiations have been completed that are at par with the past purchases of 151 choppers by India and relevant approvals are in place to sign the contract at the earliest. India first placed an order for the Mi-17V5s in 2008, when 80 of the machines were ordered to replace the ageing Mi-8 fleet.

The DAC approved the purchase of 48 new Mi-17V5 choppers in September 2015 and financial clearances have been obtained as well. However, the meager capital allocation for defence acquisitions this year could be a matter for concern. The acquisition plan includes maintenance facilities well as the mandatory offset obligation of 30% that will be invested in India.

An official explained that while some of them will go to the home ministry, a few of the new choppers are being ordered as replacements for six Mi-17V5s that were diverted to the Air HQ Communications Squadron last year that is tasked with flying VVIPs.
