JAMNAGAR (Gujarat): A MiG-29 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Friday crashed between Amran and Jivapar villages in Jamnagar, with the pilot ejecting safely.

The aircraft was on on a routine sortie from the Jamnagar airbase.

"A MiG-29 fighter jet crashed at 11.29am between Amran and Jivapar villages near Jamnagar air base," the official said.

"The pilot ejected safely when the plane crashed," he said.

A court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident.

On June 24 this year, a MiG-29 fighter aircraft on a routine sortie had crashed near Lalparda village in Jamnagar district, with the pilot ejecting safely.

In August 2012, nine Air Force personnel including five officers, on board two MI-17 helicopters were killed when two choppers of the Jamnagar air base had collided mid-air shortly after take off.

Good to hear that pilot is safe. It is not about upgradation, Planes crash just as cars malfunction, pilots may need to open parachute earlier, When this Plane loss will be replaced? Will India buy or make another MiG 29 to replace this loss?

I believe aircraft loss to accidents in peace time is any Air force's biggest enemy.

Most of Soviet planes are old, mainly MiG 21's, MiG 21's use Indian made poor quality parts that's why they crash so frequently. French Mirage or SPACECAT Jaguars also crash. Just look MiG 21's service record in other air forces as well.

Germany lost about 50% of Bf 109's in accident if I remember correctly, B 29 Bombers which wrecked Japan, crashed very often. In a single incident 27 American P 51's escorting US B 29 bombers to Osaka collided in mid air due to poor weather.

MiG-21: People's fighter or plane dangerous? | Russia & India Report

Read this mate. Any ways for MiGs service in other countries air force, IAF is a huge air force, compared to other countries IAF is extensively well trained so very high Flying Hour and MiG 21's were bulk of Force and when your pilots are flying continuously then more planes will be lost to accident. If you dont want accident then decrease pilot training like Saddam did up to 1991 Gulf war, Iraqi pilots were trained how to take off, land, bomb Kurdish villages and fire Missiles immediately after getting target lock and it's result was disastrous.

Basic difference between Soviet and US planes from cold war, Soviet planes were easy to manufacture, purpose built(MiG 21 as interceptor) with small pay load, where as US planes were costly, generally of Multirole ability with large pay load(such as F 4 Phantom), Planes will always crash if they are maintained poorly and Indian air force is very professional.

Most of the pilots lost in these MiG-21 accidents were new pilots, which pointed out another problem. India has long put off buying jet trainers. New pilots go straight from propeller driven trainer aircraft, to high performance jets like the MiG-21. This is made worse by the fact that the MiG-21 has always been a tricky aircraft to fly. That, in addition to it being an aircraft dependent on one, low quality, engine, makes it more understandable why so many MiGs were lost. And a lot were lost.
The Indian problems with MiGs were not unique. Inadequate maintenance and poorly trained pilots have been the cause of about half the lost MiGs. But India has it worst because they train their pilots to Western standards using Russian aircraft that were not designed to be used that heavily in peacetime.[/COLOR}

Comparing accident rates from 70 years ago is irrelavent. Look at yours and compare them to other operators of the same type.
