Help me understand why don't they like CDS post ?

View attachment 124021
It's not a big group of "they" it's a small group of "they" for whom the existing status quo has served the interests very well. Wasteful expenditures, military ranks on time and a post retirement cushy stint- all provided for by an ecosystem that obviously want to keep alive. "They" will come to media channels after retirement and sing melodies praising the prowess of an imported deal, while the average dhoti-kurta politician is happy with some jobs in the name of ToT. "They" will organise seminars, arrange talks, write op-ed and books "pondering" on the sorry state of military affairs in India and yet will resist tooth and nail any viable change. "They" are traitors and anti-nationals who put their individual benefit at the cost of the nation and will sell snakeoil to convince everyone otherwise. "They" are the ones we need to be very wary of, for their animosity will be subvert.

We barely have a strategic mindset in place AND you are talking about CDS culture. 😁

Bharat mein defence = troops rushing towards the border when invaded.

This was the mindset of people until the whole Doval-Modi-Shah-Rawat nexus took control of the security strategic culture and brought some semblance of forward thinking.

As @ezsasa pointed out in another thread on foreign policy, we have only started taking baby steps in that direction.

US is leagues away and has a deep state in the name of corporatists/CIA nexus that cushions the vulnerability of the democratic system. We only have a stupid democracy with no cushioning system behind.
BJP government did an excellent job by creating CDS position.

General Rawat was one of the most visionary Generals of the Indian Army, similar in stature to the likes of General Sundarji. He set a very high benchmark for all the future CDS, though he was just the first CDS of India. Although I didn't agree with every idea he had regarding Defence Reforms (such as a separate rocket force or lack of a third aircraft carrier), I still had tremendous respect for him for his commitment to defence reforms. Before he came, most Generals just paid lip service to the idea of Infantry modernization. Its under him that Infantry modernization finally took off. He implemented the ideas that were proposed by studies conducted under General VK Singh, thus taking forward his legacy. He didn't shy away from making tough statements even if they weren't "politically correct", despite being lambasted and slandered by the media and urban naxals. He was outspoken on matters of national security. Losing him so suddenly, it felt to me like a banyan tree uprooted and fell. The next CDS has large boots to fill. But as a person, the loss of General Rawat is irreperable. I had looked forward to his life even post-retirement. I had hopped to gain an insight into his thoughts from books and lectures he would have given after his retirement from the post of CDS. Now the country will never benefit from that phase of his life. Om Shanti sir. May the the rest of the establishment work hard to cement your legacy and complete the reforms you set in motion. May your wish of seeing a stronger India come true. May you attain moksh.

The Military Hospital at Wellington where late Gen Bipin Rawat was evacuated, needs to be upgraded ASAP! There are over 400 defence officers doing the one year Staff course here including officers from 22 foreign countries and yet there are few specialist facilities here.

Except for a medical specialist and a CT scan centre, there is little else by way of specialists and specialized equipment. One is sent all the way to Coimbatore or flown to the Command Hospital at Pune or MH Chennai. A person could be half-dead by the time he reaches them!!

Why was it flying so low? If cameraman can see the heli for sure they could have turned back right? Was there any issue with the heli?

I don't think low visibility could be the sole reason for the crash. It was a regular sortie between Sulur and Wellington where dense fog is very common this time of the year. It's hard to believe such highly experienced Airforce pilots would make a misjudgement in terms of weather and flight planning. There could be a technical glitch forcing them to descend? Black box data and ATC recordings should definitely shed some light.

Predicting the future line of conspiracy theorists, Propagandists, lefties, congis:

1. Anyone who gets appointed the next CDS(specially from IAF) would be painted as someone who was involved in this... & hue&cry will be created

2. After any big military deal in near future(especially of Artillery, submarine, fighters)... theories would be woven that "maybe Rawat was against it... so he was eliminated"

Be prepared for above & much much more. It's just a beginning.

In my opinion... atleast for now... nobody from IAF should become CDS... Reasons: 1. You would be giving enough space for 5th generation warfare(bcoz few months ago Gen Rawat called them support arm)

2. IAF is the force that has resisted indigenization the most... the most import dependent force... with 500 air crashes in last 25 years... who made a joke of Tejas & somewhat of fighter procurement (On the other hand, Dhruv is a success thanks to primarily the army & navy)

A Navy guy should get it... as a reward to that service for its indigenization efforts... & one who could demand a greater budget share for his force.
