IAF fighter shoots down suspicious object in Rajasthan
Rajat Pandit | TNN | Jan 26, 2016, 04.12 PM IST

NEW DELHI: A Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Tuesday shot down a balloon-like suspicious object in Rajasthan.

The unidentifiable flying object was detected by IAF radar, following which a fighter jet was scrambled.

Defence sources said that the object is likely to be a meteorological balloon

The incident happened in Barmer, nearly 500km from Rajasthan capital Jaipur, where some villagers have reported an incident of certain metal pieces falling down from the sky.

"An unidentified balloon-shaped object was picked up by by IAF radar between 10:30 and 11am today," the IAF said in a press statement.
"Further investigation is under progress," the IAF said.IAF officials said the force was on high alert due to Republic Day and the object was flying in from the western sector.

This episode yesterday was an example of how screwed up india media is.

This incident was first reported in the morning as if IAF fighter accidentally dropped munitions on villages.

Either the journos lack basic common sense or deliberately trying to incite panic. Either way there is something definitely wrong with the whole media situation in the country.

Not much to show for wreckage collection ...

TOI says that IAF team including Garuds have been despatched to the site to ascertain the facts. Even as we wait for the details, congratulations to the 33 Signal Unit and Su-30 squadron for the successful aerial intercept.

We need cheaper ways to deal with these low cost intrusions like balloons. We can't launch a SU30 every time something is spotted. We have those air defense guns, they should be put in the front line to tackle low flying objects.

Good response. This could be a paki strategy to check IAF response time and air assets situated on the border also to check the response for minor air infiltration.

The story and the outcome would have been funnier if indeed Pakistan had tied up the criminals we want and had sent them over.

Mini drones that can be deployed via bigger drone/fighter jet can also be a option(not sure if there is such a product in market).

Lower cost and less dramatic, also provides the option of capture instead of destroying the intruding smaller UFO's

Jaipur, January 27

No dangerous payload has been found in the balloon shot down yesterday by an IAF fighter jet near Barmer, bordering Pakistan, according to defence officials.

"On the analysis of the debris, it was established that there was no dangerous payload," defence spokesperson Lt Col Manish Ojha said today.

Sources said it was a private balloon and the possibility of it carrying any spying object is initially ruled out.

The IAF radar had picked up the unidentified balloon like object moving easterly in the Jaisalmer area, sending the authorities into a tizzy.

A fighter jet intercepted the object which was found to be balloon of about three meters diameter.

"Due to heightened security alert, the balloon was shot down," Ojha said. — PTI

so you think that IAF is such a fool to scrammble MKIs to shoot down any such object and then tell the public what it really was ?

This is a failure in communication. Either report something newsworthy or don't report it at all. The news channels wouldn't have got a whiff of it had they not been told by the IAF about the incident. How else do they know that an SU30 was scrambled? Indian military establishment must learn that information warfare is an independent branch of warfare and it is very important to get the right message out. News like that of the spy pigeon makes us a laughing stock in the international community.

It's not about hard facts. The establishment must realize that there is no such thing as 'local news' in today's era of 24X7 digital connectivity. Once the information is out, it has the capacity to spread everywhere. That is why it is important to control it at the source itself. Have you seen how professional spokesperson handle US military news?

In our case, the whole world is aware about the Pakistan boat incident and vividly recall that retard cost guard official shouting "we killed them, we didn't want to give them biryani". See? despite our actions being on the right side of the law, we lost the plot simply because of the way in which it was communicated. Content is important but packaging is as important, especially when international audience is involved. This happened even during the Pathankot attack when everyone was giving interviews to the press (NSC, Police, Defense Minister, Garud, Army, Police). We can't have all sorts of random officials talking about one incident and contradicting each other.

They should maintain professional silence and let the spokesperson handle all communications.

97/150 rounds were fired. Ideally mi 35 or rudra would have been ideal. but then type of threat was unknown, so Sukhoi 30 must have been scrambled

New media report says that the balloon was 3 metres in size and flying at 25000 feet altitude with "Happy birthday" written on it. Sukhoi used 97 rounds of ammo to bring it down.

I don't think there is any other choice other than a fighter jet to bring it down, donno if the nearest base has MIG's at hand.

Who writes "happy birthday" on a silver "imported from USA" which can reach those altitudes is highly debatable?
