I have finally found hard numbers to compare the telecom network carrier equipment (e.g. base stations, SDNs: Software-Defined Networks, enterprise routers and switches, etc.) revenues for Huawei, Ericcson, and Nokia.

It turns out Huawei is the world's #1 telecom network carrier equipment supplier. Huawei is larger than Ericsson, which had been the long-time leader in the telecom network carrier equipment industry.

Huawei: $35.8 billion in sales to telecom network carriers
Ericsson: $30.4 billion
Nokia: $28.5 billion

Opinion: Can Nordic rivals stop the Chinese juggernaut? | TelecomsTech

"Overall Huawei’s 2015 revenue was $60.8 Billion out of which the carrier business group generated US$35.8 billion, up 21% YoY. In comparison, Ericsson’s has revenue of about $30.4 billion, and Nokia/ALU (combined) had revenue of $28.5 billion in 2015."

Primary source for "Telecom Leaders" Huawei, Ericsson, and Nokia in 2015 telecom network revenues

Huawei was a pioneer in SDNs (ie. Software-Defined Networks) and that was primarily responsible for Huawei's explosive growth.

The article below provides the original data for Huawei, Ericsson, and Nokia regarding 2015 telecom network sales.

"Telecom Leaders

Huawei with $35.8 billion
Ericsson with $30.36 billion
Nokia with $30.06 billion
"

Revenue analysis shows Huawei is too big vs Ericsson, Nokia | Telecom Lead

Early move in SDN partly explains Huawei's success

An interesting question is how did Huawei become such a large company with $44 billion in sales for 2014? Huawei was in the right place at the right time. Huawei was an early mover into Software Defined Networking (SDN). Instead of using expensive proprietary hardware, Huawei customers could buy generic inexpensive hardware and customize it with software to emulate the functions of much more expensive dedicated hardware. By offering customers lower costs and providing added value, Huawei had a winning business strategy.

Does Huawei supply telecom equipment to USA, Cananda, Japan, Europe and Australia and are these countries even allowing to use Huawei equipments? Answer is No, as per my knowledge and in fact banned.

Why, Chinese use these very equipment supplied by ZTE and Huawei to hack and steal technology and vital military and other information. It is best to avoid Chinese telecom equipment.

Since Chinese telecom equipment is extensively used in China and price conscious third world countries like India which is again huge market, Brazil, Argentina, etc. Huawei has become the largest manufacturer of telecom equipment.

Indian govt only now has realized this and now all the equipment supplied by Chinese manufacturers are being tested for bugs are being re-certified. To avoid this Huawei is now opening plant in India

You need to stop making false claims.

I've worked on Huawei platforms, basically routers. To tell the truth, Huawei is the top brand when it comes to product sell in world of telecommunication. But don't be fooled that it means it is getting selected for quality. Infact Huawei is of sub-standard when you compare with Cisco or Juniper or Extreme or Nortell or anything else. The onus of Huawei is in its cheap price. In India a Cisco basic branch router of latest 2900 series comes somewhere at 1 to 2 lakh (depends). But in the same price you would get around 2 routers of Huawei. Obviously people are selecting Huawei because of the fact that its more of a use and throw equipment when compared with those of Cisco or Juniper or others.

When it comes to telecom, things are no where different. Huawei and ZTE are damn cheap then those of Ericsson or Nokia. They always emerge L1 when it comes to price bid and take the cake. The level of their competitiveness could be gauged by the fact that ZTE does provide 1 DSLAM free against purchase of 2 DSLAM.

The only reason why Huawei is at top of the pack is only because of its price. When it comes to quality, its best to avoid them and I am saying this from personal experience.

So that means the Chinese will be spying on the entire world in few year from now or already they are doing it ... How valid is the hacking of phones with their Chips the semiconductor or the processor ? have poor knowledge on VLSI and micro architecture. is it easy for them to track any phone or access any information with their telecom equipment's sitting in china....?

sour grapes!

I don't want to degrade Cisco, obviously it's a great company. but the comparison you just made is just biased.

it's true when it comes to high end routers, Cisco and Juniper are the best. but huawei's success doesn't come by just being cheap. huawei's routers are not that bad as you have suggested, they meet the requirements of their buyers at lower prices.

huawei is not as good as Cisco, but it ended the domination of Cisco in high end rounters and dramatically brought down the prices. to make a sophisticated and workable router is hard, to make it cheap is harder.

and huawei routers may be cheaper, but it still costs millions each, that in fact is a lot of money.

the backbones of Internet infrastructures were built upon Cisco routers in many countries, including china. but since snowden revealed NSA was spying the whole world through IT companies like IBM, Google and Cisco, etc, China has been gradually replacing Cisco equipments with huawei at the vital Internet knots.

depends on if huawei has left any backdoor in its products.

Cisco has been proved to provide assistance to NSA in prism program, how safe is it to use Cisco equipments?

Huawei is a technology pioneer and its patents are important for at least four reasons.

1. Huawei pioneered many SDN technologies.
2. Huawei built "the industry’s first Giga DSL (Digital Subscriber line) prototype" in 2011.
3. "Huawei also recently announced the successful development of the world’s first node level vectoring (NLV) prototype" in 2011.
4. Huawei was an innovator in DSLAM.

Due to its pioneering technologies and patents, Huawei grew into a $60 billion company for 2015. Chinese tech companies develop many of their own technologies and patents to become giants.

The following citation is from 2011 on Huawei's pioneering technology.

Huawei Unveils Industry's First Giga DSL Prototype

Huawei Smart AX M5300. The Smart AX MA5300 platform has been instrumental to Huawei's success in the global DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) market, but the MA5600 series, designed to support more bandwidth-intensive services such as triple/quad play, is the company's flagship DSLAM.

Its not a case of sour grapes.

No where I am diminishing the fact of Huawei high end products. But when it comes down to reliability, 90 out of 100 customers I have dealt with till date would discard Huawei. It may be on top in many nations including China. But when it comes to working condition of India and Indian weather, Huawei is simply not upto mark. Only recently I have been involved with roll out of one massive network with high end Huawei router (NE40E-X16). But during after interaction and AT with customer, they are highly disappointed with its performance and had cried for the fact that Huawei had simply won the contract on basis of price. On the other hand while deploying another network with ASR9000 series (ASR9922) recently, I was simply comparing the performance level. Let me give you a simple brief of both their capability.

HUAWEI NE40E-X16
No of LPU 16
Switching rate 12.58Tbps
SFU 4
Price $9000 approx

Cisco ASR9922
No of LPU 20
Switching rate 160Tbps
SFU 6+1
Price $36000 approx

Now based on these facts, which product would you go for if you want quality sans price. But in current economic and competitive scenario, where most of the telecom companies have to roll out cheap plans to survive, they would opt for cheaper alternative to bring down the cost of infra implementation and hence Huawei is making the cut. And I am not complaining here. Huawei too is doing their bit to remain relevant in the field.
