More than powerful to power plane like sitara. Its proposed 40 KN/62.5 kn engine shall be more than powerful to power Jaguar and twin engine LCA.
Twin engine LCA is never going to happen...................................................................

I think jaguar and lca need an engine with at least 85 kn of thrust
If you put a 85 kn dry thrust engine in LCA, it can beat any other plane in the world in T/W ratio. 85 KN is too much for a 6.5 ton plane which is set to loose atleast 500 kg. Most probably it will be unnecessary. Even 60 KN dry thrust of GE 414 shall be more than enough for Tejas to give it required thrust to perform any design parameter.

We have a steep hill to climb in aviation...
In terms of airframe design..we have only HJT 36, HTT 40, Tejas and Saras. Hopefully we can design Regional Transport Aircraft and move to design our own Medium Transport Aircraft

In terms of engines, we only have the PTA turbojet for Lakshya, Shakti for Rudra helicopters, Manik for Nirbhay, HTFE, HTSE and Kaveri.

Kaveri and HTFE are low bypass engines. Modern large jets have high bypass engines - they are moving towards geared engines and prop-fans - this is a huge gap to close.

We need a national aeronautical commission under PMO to oversee this development like the space and atomic energy commissions.

Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) generated revenue of more than Rs180 billion in the financial year ended 31 March 2018, up 2.2% year-on-year.

The government-owned airframer says it produced 40 new aircraft and helicopters, and 105 new engines, while also taking orders for 41 Dhruv and eight Chetak helicopters from the Indian armed forces.

It completed overhaul work on 220 aircraft and helicopters, and 550 engines.

During the just-ended financial year, HAL received initial operational clearance for its light combat helicopter, and certificate of airworthiness for the civil variant of the Dornier Do-228 from India's directorate general of civil aviation.

It also obtained acceptance from the Indian air force of the Dassault Mirage 2000 upgrade, completed the first run of the HTSE-1200 turboshaft engine, and completed a test firing of the BrahMos missile from a Sukhoi Su-30 MKI.

"The company has also continued to emphasize on self-reliance towards development of indigenous products, diversification into civil segment, enhancement of capacity, support development of defence manufacturing eco-system by developing domestic vendors and enhance outsourcing," says HAL's chairman and managing director T. Suvarna Raju.

Ge 414 has just 60kn of thrust? Are you kidding me?

Can anybody enlighten me?
Is it too difficult or a bad idea to design a plane for a twin engine kaveri?
Is it not better to work around what we have rather than not?
Kaveri dry thrust would be atleast 52kn. So a super tejas can potentially be made to super cruise (guessing)

In my above post, I am assuming kaveri in its last known configuration.

Maybe.
But then it wouldn't meet the next gen requirements for IAF...supercruise, heavy payload etc....then AMCA (with Kaveri) will have limited induction, requiring full-featured next-gen aircraft to be imported IN WHOLE!

It is more wise to build a full-featured next-gen indigenous aircraft while being in control of the whole design and capabilities...........even if parts of the aircraft are imported!!!! (just as Tejas is right now)

I see your point. However, the engines for rafales are actually less powerful than kaveri although lighter. If rafale is so good and can super cruise, how far a twin kaveri aircraft would be, considering the design would be suitable for its weight and size (slightly bigger than snecma).

Rafale has very limited supercruise capability (perhaps with no weapons load & limited fuel load).
The expectation from AMCA is much higher - it'll need to supercruise with at least its internal weapons bay fully packed and fly long distance. As such, the power expectation from each engine is nearly twice that of M88's!

Rafale has an extensive supercruise capability, Mach 1.4 with A2A loadout and a centre-line drop tank. It is the F-35 that is garbage.

HAL HTSE-1200 Turboshaft Engine Progressing Well
Saturday, September 07, 2019 by Indian Defence News

A cutaway model of HTSE-1200 turboshaft engine at Aero India, 2017
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is developing a new indigenous helicopter engine—the Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine (HTSE) 1200. The announcement follows the first test run of the 25-kN (5,620-lb.) thrust Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine (HTFE) 25. “The HTSE-1200 can be used for helicopters of 3.5-ton class in the single-engine configuration such as the Light Utility Helicopter and for 5 to 8 ton class in twin engine configuration such as the Advanced Light Helicopter and Light Combat Helicopter.

The 1200 kW turboshaft engine is designed to be used as power plant for 3 to 8 ton category helicopters. The HTSE-1200 engine technology demonstrator was assembled and inaugural test run successfully carried out on 12 February 2018 with 76% rpm achieved. The engine was actually tested at sea level at the DefExpo 2018 site for light up, acceleration and stable running at idle speed. The engine is currently under testing with over 240 successful engine runs completed so far. It is also reported that the maiden test flight with the new engine is also planned by HAL by the end of this year.
