NEW DELHI: In a boost for India, the inaugural run of the core of 25 kN indigenous Aero Engine (Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine - HTFE 25) was successfully completed in the presence of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar at HAL's Engine Division on Monday.

Also known as the Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine (HTFE-25), it can be used for basic, intermediate and advanced trainer aircraft. The engine can also be used on business jets and five ton weight class aircraft in single engine configuration and on aircraft of up to nine ton weight class with twin engine configuration.

Parrikar also launched the design and development project of Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine (HTSE-1200) which can be used for helicopters.

The HTSE-1200 can be used for helicopters of 3.5 ton class in the single engine configuration (e.g. LUH) and for 5 to 8 ton class in twin engine configuration (e.g. ALH, LCH). The engine develops a power of 1200 kW at sea level and can operate up to an altitude of 7 km. This project too is undertaken by HAL with its internal resources with an aim of d ..

Complimenting HAL for undertaking these projects, Parrikar said all out efforts should be made to achieve maximum in the aeronautical engineering with active participation of HAL and the private sector together. "The recent expansion of activities in the aerospace sector as seen in HAL and has potential to turn India into aerospace manufacturing hub. The country would need 4000 to 6000 helicopter engines in the coming years and efforts of HAL to in this direction needs to be appreciated,"

T Suvarna Raju, CMD of HAL said successful running of the 25 kN engine is one of the major mile-stones achieved by the company in its platinum jubilee year contributing to Make-in-India efforts of the government.

"Aero Engine Research & Design Centre (AERDC), HAL, Bengaluru had taken up the Design and Development of a 25 kN thrust class turbofan engine for basic military trainer aircraft. HAL used its internal resources with an aim of producing indigenously designed and developed aero engines in a time frame of six years beginning from 2013. In the first phase of the programme, the design of the full engine and manufacture and testing of the technology demonstrator of the core engine are covered. In ..

What does this successfully mean, Is this Ready for testing on any plane OR was turned ON for first time (successfully) ?

This is a small engine, but it is a step in the right direction.

From 25 kN, we will soon build something equivalent to the Soloviёv PS-90, which is more than 7 times as powerful, and is used in the Ilyushin-76 and other planes.

If anyone of you guys can get hold of a video of the inaugural run, please share.

Last year in December state-owned HAL completed successfully inaugural run of its 25 kN indigenous Aero Engine (HTFE 25) in the presence of Raksha Mantri Manohar Parrikar at HAL’s Engine Division . After the function, CMD of HAL T Suvarna Raju briefed Media and said that Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine (HTFE-25), it can be used for basic, intermediate and advanced trainer aircraft. The engine can also be used on business jets and five-tonne weight class aircraft in single engine configuration and on aircraft of up to nine-ton weight class with twin engine configuration. First, a likely candidate for this new engine will be HJT-36 MKII Intermediate jet trainer aircraft which HAL plans to develop as an upgraded IJT with Modern Avionics which will also replace current Russian NPO Saturn AL-55I engine used in HJT-36 which generates about 16.9 kN of thrust . HAL wants to have a relook at its old proposal of CAT (Combat Air Trainer) Advance Jet Trainer (AJT) project which was buried nearly 10 years ago after IAF refused to show interest in the project and stuck with BAe Supplied HAWK AJTs . HAL plans to revive Twin engined supersonic Lead in Fighter Trainer (LIFT) CAT which can also be used as a secondary ground attack aircraft in combat zones with minimal Anti-Aircraft threat perceptions . Proposal to develop a Two HTFE-25 engined CAT LIFT/AJT is at the design stage and will require Indian Air Force to be onboard for the CAT Project to become reality . While HAL has no intention to develop its own light business jets for the time being but is interested in offering it’s 25 kN HTFE-25 engines for other Aircraft manufacturers who are into development of light business jets . Conclusion : Usage of HTFE-25 engine is marked by lot of uncertainties since it is yet to be linked to any aviation project in India , Development off HTFE-25 seems to be purely in-house project carried out by HAL which has been done not on request by user (Military) but by the company itself which is planning to revive their proposals for old and new aircraft which may or not be accepted by users like India air force .

When Parrikar was there to see this engine, I had advocated same on the thread. If we get a more powerful variant of this engine, Say 40 KN, we may use it in Jaguar as well.

This 25kN is non after burning/base configuration thrust or the take off power. Sepacat Jaguar uses RR-Turbomeca Adour with a non after burning thrust of 22.75 kN. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEPECAT_Jaguar

This engine is more powerful than the current engine in Jaguar IF wiki specifications are correct. We can use two of these engines and try on a jaguar. But IMHO, jaguar needs to GO and we should not waste any more money on them. No other country operates it other than our's. It looks pathetic. May be we can try to play with MiG 21 and Jaguars and convert them into combat UAVs, if we could get the avionics & control right.

If dry thrust is 25 KN than it is great. I appreciate that but than once again it will be an over powered engine fro the planes like Sitara. Where shall we use this engine? May be in twin engine Tejas? It is unlikely. It can not fit anywhere else except Jaguar and we are planning get much more powerful engine for Jaguar which is more powerful than this 25 KN engine (Dry thrust if true).
