Almost in every india military forum, I can find some indians insisting the reason China can keep UN security committee seat is Nehru rejected the offer.

Could my india friends provide some detail evidences regarding this event: In which year, who make the offer in what kind of ocassion.

Since I knew little about diplmocy, welcome those with related knowledge to comment this event: especially Colonel of Engineers and Ray!

Thanks.

Some india friends just repeat that in last 50s Idia was offered a permanent UNSC seat. According to these people, this offer was rejected by Nehru for the friendship with China.

Can anyone provide a detailed report about this event?

You are wrong Indian Blues,

A P5 seat was given to each of the major victorious powers in WWII. Thus the ROC (Taiwan was given the seat). It was NOT offered to the PRC, and it was NOT offered to India, b/c India at the time was British territory and not a sovereign power. Thus since the ROC (taiwan) held the seat until the early 70's, it is impossible that Nehru gave up the seat to China (PRC) since the PRC didn't join until the early 70's.

You are refuting because of your personal opinion.

Mr. Shashi Tharoor, the United Nation's Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information in his book "Nehru - The Invention of India," writes that Jawaharlal Nehru "declined a United States offer" to India to "take the permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council" around 1953. Nehru declined the offer about the same time as he turned down "with scorn" John Foster Dulles' support for an Indian Monroe Doctrine. Nehru suggested that the United Nations Security Council seat held by Taiwan be offered to Beijing instead.

Shashi Tharoor currently holds the post of State for External Affairs, and you don't want us to believe him too?

These are all political moves probably we won't ever find a concrete evidence of nehru's dumping of UNSC seat.

India_blues's mentality exactly shows how a "myth" can be accepted as "truth" by Indians!:blum3:

A myth is a truth unless it is not proven otherwise.

He is stating facts from a book. Your non-acceptance to that book's claim actually shows the Chinese mentality of how an unacceptable "truth" is always a "myth".:blum3:

however, the myth spread so widely in india that its seems to have become a "truth" in India.....:113:
It's almost common knowledge here (that that was a myth/hoax). Maybe it's a myth in China that we gave up our UNSC seat to PRC.

There were too many confidence-building measures between the two countries. Maybe this myth is one of them.

re

Rajan,

Rofl chairman Mao.

Here's an exerpt taken from UN's official page.

"Is it fair that only five major Powers have the right to veto?
At the end of World War II, China, France, the
Russian Federation (originally the USSR),
the United Kingdom and the United States
played key roles in the establishment of
the United Nations. The creators of the UN
Charter conceived that these five countries
would continue to play important roles in
the maintenance of international peace and
security. So the “big five” were given a special
voting power known as the “right to veto”. It
was agreed by the drafters that if any one of the “big five” cast a negative vote in the
15-member Security Council, the resolution or decision would not be approved."

Source: www.un.org/geninfo/faq/Everything_You_Always_Wanted_to_Know_About_the_UN.pdf

India was never "offered". In fact no one was. It was predetermined by the founders.

A myth is still a myth until it is proven by hard evidence.

No, he is stating a quote from a book, which happend to be written by an indian. I am more than happy to accept any fact which is supported by several sources.

For example, in this case, what about the usa representives making the offer? who are they? Did they clarify this claim?

As I found, this author, Dr Shashi Tharoor was born 1958. So he couldn't be invloved in the whole event. He must heared from someone else. Who is his informant? What did he say? Was there any documents he left clarifying this myth?

Come on, as a great nation, you realy don't this kind of thing to build your confidence.

He wasn't trying to invalidate his authority. No Smoking meant that it gave other scholars as much authority as this guy.

India was not offered a seat, full stop.

China contributed most to both the creation of the UN charter, and the establishment of the UN. Why on earth would anyone have offered India the seat rather than China? China wasn't offered either, it decided it should have one.
